  1. And lots and lots of different varieties of apples.
  2. Very fighty! Very bizarre. She should stick to sword carrying, she did a good job of that.
  3. I didn't hear it. What was the gist of it? I thought she was one of the better ones as well. I agree about top Tory women. I'm not sure who's more scary; Suella Braverman or Liz Truss. The likes of Nadine Dories, Priti Patel, Thérèse Coffey, Michelle Donelan etc, aren't much better.
  4. Brace yourselves boys and girls. You could be enjoying a lovely hot day tomorrow, or swimming for your life, depending where in the country you are. UK weather: 26C for parts of UK - but heavy rain warning for Scotland WWW.BBC.CO.UK An amber rain warning is in place for Scotland, while warm weather is forecast in other parts of the UK.
  5. I think the Amygdalin stuff breaks down to a cyanide compound, hence the toxicity.
  6. Amygdalin. Not heard of that before, cheers. Seems to be an interesting if controversial compound. Must be similar to the almond smelling stuff in Laurel leaves, they're all in the Prunus Genus anyway. Do you seek out the Amygdalin specifically for something or just happy to consume it alongside everything else? Pectin is another good thing contained within fruit and berries, and similarly, the more of the non fruit bits, (skins, seeds, stalks etc), you can consume the better. You're right about today's sweet tastes, things have moved far too far down that route. In the West we eat crazy amounts of the crap, and we're seeing the consequences of it. The tolerance for sharp/sour and bitter has been pretty much lost. Have you tried shop bought jam or other prepared "fruit" products? It's rank imo, just oversweet blandness, no real flavour. .
  7. Nice one. Thank you. Just need to find some room to plant a couple of trees now. This place has some good stuff;- https://www.pennardplants.com/products.php?cat=472
  8. Looks it to me. Or maybe a hybrid between Blackthorn and Damson or Bullace.
  9. I don't have strong feelings either way. On balance I think it'll be a pretty pointless exercise, it won't achieve much. It may well make the situation worse by driving tobacco into the hands of criminals, at least with it being regulated at the moment there is some control over what goes into tobacco products. Once it gets into the black market there'll be all sorts of crap in there, over and above the cocktail of toxic chemicals already in tobacco. This isn't exactly prohibition, but it's not far off. And everyone knows prohibition never works. Where drugs are concerned the legal status barely makes much difference to most people. From a personal perspective as someone who once smoked, the fact that it had become illegal certainly wouldn't have made me stop, I would've just sourced it from somewhere else. Same as other stuff. I stopped for my own health benefit, and that of my family, nought to do with the law. Anyway most people start much younger in life, below the current legal age limit, so raising it will make very little difference to anyone. If the government are really serious about Public Health, (and I don't for one minute believe that they are), then there's far higher priorities in this day and age. There's not even that many smokers anymore from what I've seen around, it's a dying habit! Things like Ultra Processed Food, poor air quality, lack of exercise etc are far more pressing concerns. And then there's vaping, kids vaping specifically. I think we've just seen the tip of the iceberg with that, I get the feeling it's going to turn into a massive shit shower. The govn ought to get some kind of handle on these public health issues before they go back and waste time and money on good old fashioned smoking.

    HS2 Over

Negative environmental impact of HS2 could worsen with scaling back | HS2 | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Despite efforts to mitigate biodiversity loss, planning has destroyed parts of ancient woodlands and damage will continue... Just a rumour apparently, the wrecking work for phase two hasn't really been started in earnest yet. Not that that's going to improve the situation though, according to this.
  13. Rishi Sunak defends his plan to ban smoking for younger generation WWW.BBC.CO.UK The prime minister tells the BBC he backs the move because there is "no safe level of smoking".

  15. Thanks. That bugger is certainly loaded with fruit. It's like the tree has aimed to use every available inch of space along the branches. I wonder if it's shallow rooting habit is due to its having evolved to grow in sand dunes on the coast. Probably no advantage to being deep rooted in that situation.
  16. You'd have to guard your Bifora testiculata, or you might end up with a Phallus impudicus.
  17. Learnt presumably from that fine, upstanding Pillar of the Arbtalk Community.
  18. Yes please to the cultivar name. I'll be interested to try that growing and using that. Puckeringly sour we can deal with. I've done a fair bit of home brewing in the past, though never mead. What's the rough proportions of honey/water/sea buckthorn juice?
  19. Only of the weed tree variety. Seedlings from helicopter seeds that have landed in untended pots.
  20. What does it taste like? It's one of these things that I imagine to be horrendously sour/bitter/dry/astringent unless you add a rook of sugar to it. Like the Hawthorne berries that I tried a while back. Full of healthy goodness but in no way palatable by themselves!
  21. Are we back to Chinese Wind Farms again? 🤷‍♂️ Apologies, my mistake, I misread the somewhat ambiguous statement. 🤷‍♂️ In which case; how is "ULEZ another bit of lunacy that is contributing to Glasgows decline"? No, I don't know where the M8 runs. I've only been to Glasgow briefly, some years ago. I know nothing of the ULEZ situation or history there. Presumably it was poorly implemented, without nuance and lacking in common sense. I was hoping that you could elaborate for us, and give some insight into your outrage. Based on anecdotal evidence as experienced by yourself and "everyone you know" of course. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Before you ask - no, I'm not an SNP supporter! There was an informal pole of residents on our road on making it a "no through road, residents only" type effort a couple of years ago. There was a slight majority in favour. Never going to happen though as there's a fire station at one end and a train station at the other. What do you think to the drug consumption rooms in Scotland anyway? That was the original subject before you descended into your rat frenzy. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230818-drug-war-bloodbath-shakes-marseille-as-rival-gangs-shoot-it-out-1
