  4. Here we go then, I finally got around to having a look at one of these trees closely. It looks like @openspaceman is on the money with his suggestion. Squirrel damage. Not so much ring barking as complete bark stripping though. Above about 18 inches from ground level almost all of the bark was gone from this young Sycamore. Apart from some random branches. They were dead anyway though as the whole trunk below was skinned. It was amazing, I've never seen anything like it, such extensive damage. If it wasn't for the height and the fact that it was in an urban park/recreational area I would have said it was deer work. I'm sure I've never seen this as bad in previous years, I wonder why the little bastards are doing it now.

  7. They're not worth the effort really. They are kinda sweet, but only vaguely and no acidity to excite the palate. Just insipid. The thrill of carefully eating something potentially poisonous is the only reason to try them. Speaking from experience here, ever the curious cat me.

  10. Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right, it's an Elder Tree, not Willow at all. @Unfortunate Fool - crush and then smell the leaves, if they stink that will confirm it! Interestingly, I read recently that they prohibit the growth of other trees around them, (hence not popular as hedge trees traditionally). That might be another reason why the Holly was not happy. Makes more sense actually as they often grow as understory trees, overshadowed by larger trees in woodland.
  11. The Holly will reshoot from the bottom if exposed to enough light. I've cut them down to ground level before now and they've sprung up with a load of new growth after a few months. That was in the open, in full sunlight though. As it is with yours there I'm not so sure, it's still in the shadow of the other tree at the base, (Willow maybe?). Time period? I'm not too sure exactly but within six months I'd guess.

  16. On the continent they often seem to fill any large cavities like that with concrete, and that appears to work. Which surprises me, I don't think it would work here in our damp, mouldy climate. Here's one I saw in China a couple of months ago. Complete with built in pipes for drainage.
  17. Pole Saws are the future. Why faff around with ropes and stuff when you can just do everything from the comfort of the ground with a Pole Saw? (As long as the requisite work wear of muscle top, jeans and trainers is worn.)

  19. Yes, I was surprised about the effect of adding the rye. It was only a quarter of the total flour and yet turned it into a brick, almost completely surpressed the rise. Tastes good, just very dense. I'll try adding more yeast next time, don't know if that'll help. Edit. More yeast probably won't help much. I just looked it up and it's far more complicated than that. Rye flour has less glutenin, more pentosan carbs, and more amylase enzymes. I'm not pretending to understand the ramifications of any of that!
