    Jokes???

You've got to admire that guy's logic at least.
  2. Add Poplar to that list as well. It's pretty crap firewood but needs splitting, stacking and covering sharpish if it is to be used as such. It turns into mush in no time at all if left around.
  3. Phew, panic over. 👍
  4. Interesting, I've wondered what it's purpose was. Another great idea. Is it invasive at all, does it spread itself around? Like a lot of the bamboos do for instance.
  5. Does that mean you're agreeing with me? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Help! Call the site admin. @Johnsond's account has been hacked!
  6. Interestingly, the bark of birch trees is far more resistant to rotting than the timber. You often see logs that have half rotted away inside, with bark still intact. Presumably why they use I to make Birch Tar, lots of useful compounds in there.
  7. I don't think anyone is looking at us thinking how environmentally friendly we are anymore nd. Mugs or otherwise. Why as a country are we not grasping this opportunity to invest in our own renewable energy industry? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ We've just about still got the skills and knowledge to make all the stuff here in the UK. This could be our ticket to reviving our all but extinct manufacturing industry.
  8. ............Also known as the “fat inkeeper worm” There's some weird and wonderful creatures out there for sure.
  9. I don't think you've quite grasped the concept yet mate.

    Jokes???

  11. Not my favourite sandwich filling, but a good one nonetheless. Sild; the Gold Standard of tinned fish.
  12. Climate change is just a load of MSM hype. Come up, keep up!
  13. It's a lovely summer's day here today, (beginning of August)! Wet and windy and only 12 degrees.
  14. Carbon offsetting is high on the Ollox scale. Good example is HS2. They're justifying destroying acres of ancient woodland by planting some crappy little saplings. Trees need to be into middle age before they approach optimum carbon absorption rates.
  15. 100mm should be fine for the plaster. For peace of mind though you could render the wall behind the stove with a sand/cement based mix instead, it's more heat resistant and generally much tougher than gypsum plaster. Ours is only about 75mm from the back of the fireplace. I rendered it as it's also a nice texture and easier to do than plastering in a small space.

    Jokes???

  17. Good to hear this. It was never a conspiracy theory in my book, always been fascinated by the idea, and would like to believe it but can't quite entirely as I've not had personal experience. Any ideas on how it works?
  18. So, Dowsing, water divining. That's another interesting one, I should have included that on the list. Some old country boys swear by it for finding springs in fields, or lost drains or pipes.
  19. You could try a different knot out at least. Something like a Distel Hitch say, tied in separate friction cord. Also, add a small slack tending pulley. It'll be so much smoother and nicer. With only very modest outlay and minimal extra kit to carry.
  20. I thought there was some folklore about witches and Rowan, couldn't quite remember what that, old Scottish lady, customer had told me. Not that you'd imagine anyone using it for firewood but it's supposedly back luck or upsets the witches or something, if you cut Elder Trees down.
  21. I remember that. I thought it was in Germany though. The lioness/wild boar! was the escaped pet of some high profile gangster or other.
  22. Hell yeah. Even a bit of Wasabi if you've got it in as well, they all compliment red meat. Got to be English or at least Dijon mustard though, non of that weird Germany/American muck. Good to refresh the old sinuses as you eat some tasty treats.
  23. Controversial! If there's a place for horseradish then there's a place for mustard.
  24. Sycamore or Ash. For reasons already mentioned.
  25. Interesting to see the different opinions on this. What are your thoughts on Nessie?
