  1. So your half ton of beech is less than the SWL anyway, so even if its snatched it will be fine if you groundie knows what he's doing, and very not fine if he doesn't.
  2. Yes but breaking load is what is written on a karabiner, so you cant compare a 7Kn SWL of a winch to an aluminium karabiner that has 7kn written on the side. I agree its all about SWL. If you want to use a lower SF you can do. 10:1 is really for ropes etc. so you could use 5:1 on the winch if you like, it still aint gonna break. But 500kgs of wood snatched is more likely to exceed SWL on your rope well before it does so on the winch, which is fine as the rope should be the weakest part anyway. I do think the 700kgs SWL is a bit low, and easy to exceed, but it really doesn't matter, if your rope and the tree can take it then go for it. Thats always been my method.
  3. Very good, but you need to know your SWL from your MBS!! Karabiner dont show SWL as that is up to the end user to decide what safety factor is in place.
  4. Yes but as breaking strain not SWL. Yes I agree its bugger all, but on a alluminium karabiner the MBS would be, say 24kn and the side loading and/or with gate open would be 7kn. Giving SWL's of 240kgs and 70kgs respectivley. The winch has a SWL of 7kn not an MBS. Totally different thing.
  5. No the tiny karabiner is more likly to have a SWL of 7kgs??

Cost. Use old climbing rope if you want, anything will do but the nicer it is the more it costs.
  7. You can use the milked off bit to make a sheath for a small sling to use as a redirect, like the ones HB sells for mucho ££.
  8. It should depend on which engineers turn up, the ones with an invoice book or the ones without. If its just a snapped/cut cable then it should just be repaired. I agree though, that if you ripped the junction boxes off the wall of the house then that might be a bit more serious. BT are only obliged to reconnect the service, not necessarily to do any repairs to the building, so the original rule of just dont break anything is still the foremost important bit.
  9. Yes, but, no, but, there wouldn't be an "assessor" if the customer reports a fault. A "repairer" would turn up whose sole job is to get the customer connected up again ASAP, not to decide any fault. BT have a policy of fixing faults within 24 hours, after that they have to refund the line rental. So when a customer reports an unknown fault it gets fixed, but if a customer says a tree surgeon has broken my line, or worst still a tree surgeon phones up and admits cutting a line, then an assessor might be called. Avoid that situation by being canny! Its not an agreed method that the customer will report it and BT will fix it and happy ever after but it work that way if you play the game carefully. Another way of thinking of it is this, BT have two sets of engineers, one set is already paid for by the customers (Us) in the line rental fees, and the other set who have to charge there work out to someone. You need to make sure that its the first lot who are called!

It looks like that stuff which is usually beige with black not the other way round?
  12. No it wouldn't invalidate anything, its not utilities (in the eyes of your insurance) And, yes get the customer to report any faults/breakages but a certain amount of nice talking is required for this to work, i.e. you need to have a nice customer and explain that its much better for them to report it. If you just walk away from any faults and "tell" the customer to sort it, then it could all come back at you, but the worst case scenario is only that you have to pay the repair bill. Its not ever going to be an insurance claim unless the affected person claims for stress and lack of earnings etc, thats why its best to have spoken to the client first. ANd then of course just dont break any wires!!!
  13. Agreed, the worstcase scenario with the MEWP is way worse than with climbing! And the potential for that worst case scenario happening is quite high.
  14. Mark, I think you knew the answer to your question before you posted, thats why you have dismissed all the advice except from the ones that agree with you/your boss. Go for it if he says its ok. I would expect he would want fifty percent of whatever you make in return for truck and chipper (thats a massive lend) then it sounds like you want to spend the next 45% on a website/cards etc etc. Pointless operation if you ask me, it will end in tears. As a new enterprise you will attract customers who have had a quote already or who at least know what prices to expect and you will be offered the chance to do shitty work for half price if you want it. Good luck to you, you'll be taking small jobs away from other businesses that rely on small jobs to keep the employees busy. Its not that long ago you were looking for work, now you have found it with a good employer its not good enough for you? We all did the occasional saturday job when we started out, there is nothign wrong with that. One a month fo rexample can give you some good extra spendign money. Cash in hand, no worries. But to create a website and advertise means you will need insurance, and to pay tax on it. For what can only be 52 days a year if your prepared to give up your private/social life. When are you going to look at all these jobs that come in? Evening now for sure, but in the winter its dark so looking at jobs is often doen on saturday, so some saturdays will be quoting (if you get any enquiries) so that means less than 52 days available for work. Not many folk will want you there on a sunday. Gets some work in first, by chatting to folk (business cards if you have to) but dont go mad just yet. Save the website for another day and try and listen to the advice that you have asked for.
  15. Some good sale items here Cotswold ladies sale items And if you went for non sale items then dont forget the 15% discount for isa members that actually anyone can get if they order online.
  16. If you have limited computer know how then a spread sheet might be a good bet, or some mught say spread sheets are difficult and a specific program might be better, but I find specific programs ar ejust now right for what we want/need i.e. they are usually over complicated. A spreadsheet can be made up with as many or as few columns as you need, and the data can be sorted in many different ways.
