  1. Exactly, yet some of these people run businesses! Its the same idea as "getting the VAT back" instead of the reality of just giving it away in a different direction!
  2. I take no responsiblity for this campsite! I had forgotten about it until I drove past it on the bank holiday weekend (drivign on the duel carriageway) and I thought to myself "look at all those tents on that sloping field!"
  3. Thats a good way to look at it. Id say that the percentage of costs that goes towards tools is way more than towards advertising, so your way is about right? I bought an 088 last year and it has done 1200 pounds worth of work that I could have just about managed with an 066 so all it has done is saved me the difference in time between struggling with an 066 ( its the ringing up mostly not the felling) and breezing it with an 088. This difference is significant but only half a day I guess. So I'm £250 up so far. Another three jobs like that and I break even on the saw. But a saw has its whole lifespan to make up its money. Advertising is an annual "fee" so an £800 advert must make its profits within a year before the tax, sorry fee has to be paid again. If we agree that 25% of income can go towards tools then we would agree that no more than 5% can go on advertising? So one job to pay for the advertising is unlikely. In reference to what i said above with people thinking they get the money back on tools, I meant the notion that you get it back through tax, not through the money earned from the tool itself. Like when you say you've spent 1000 on a saw and then some numpty say "but you claim that back don't you"
  4. Go and watch and pretend you work in IT if you want! You'll learn loads.
  5. Just checked again, four miles as crow flies, so add a bit to that!
  6. Its not the best campsite in the world, quite a slope on the camping area and near ish to a duel carriage way but not right next to it. Easy to get to though.
  7. 4 miles tops! I just looked at the map and the shortcut is not much shorter, maybe longer, just misses out cirencester town thats all. Probably best to go through cirencester and get an idea of where supermarkets are etc.
  8. lol i thaught it was brill 2 minits walking the dog first what a visionary concept in film makeing HA ha, thanks! I think? I'm no Claude Lalouch thats for sure! (do a search on youtube, check out the ferrari film)
  9. Sure it can't hurt. Hey how about a website devoted to discussing different ideas and tricks etc? I have got my sacastic/slightly annoyed/annoying hat on tonight. (Not annoyed by anything here though)
  10. If you want a good example of a really awful video with bad soundtrack then look no further than my first attempt at editing.! This is shot with a cheap headcam and a normal camera with video made. No one other than us saddos on here could possibly sit through this!! Never been shown before, but to show no harm was meant with my critisism you can get me back now...... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhNJXt5OAyo]YouTube - chipping birch[/ame]
  11. I have offered some opinions.
  12. Sorry, couldn't help myself. The vid is fine and good fun to play around with editing etc, its just that what is fun for you/us will probably not work for a website for clients. We all love Reg's vids but clients or anybody not in the trade wouldn't sit through more than 5 seconds. Unfortunatly you woudl be better off getting a third party to make the videos.
  13. "heres a vid i made for our web site to promote our stump grinding service" "Its not on the web site and it was done more by accident rather than set up to make a vid just made it for something to do last night coz arbtalk wasnt working on my pc"
  14. There is this campsite. Mayfield Park , Cirencester Campsites, Gloucestershire Campsites and Caravan Sites Not far away and there is a good short cut too!
  15. I don't think they do camping there. And it says members only.
  16. Ha, thats right next to Bartletts old yard! On the web site it says "ideal for families" and "peaceful".
  17. Whats normal? GRCS and Hobbs are normal if thats what you use all the time, wrapping three strand round the tree is normal too. Get over yourselves, its gonna be a really boring day out. Go on a f'rigging course that is structured and has a point to it i.e a certification, and get it over with that way. Standing around looking at each others krabs will achieve very little IMO.
  18. Head cams go on tripods too! Theres a huge differenc ebetween what we understand and what a client understands. For example I've mentioned stump grinding and clients have said they don't want it ground (or grinding) they want it removed. We should all offer a stump removal service, and explain that we recycle it into grinding or chips etc. There is no point making a video in order to make sense to other Arbs, not if its for a website. I like the slide show idea. Stump/stump+machine/no stump+ machine/ no stump + no machien + no mess.
  19. Interesteing thread this, I hear many people say that an £800 pound job from yellow pages/yell.com has paid for their £800.00 advert in one go. They feel pleased with themselve that the advert worked! Its a kind of delusional madness suffered by the same people that think they get the money back when they spend on work tools etc! If you allow an advertising budget of say 5% then an £800 pound job has £40.00 available to go towards advertising. So to pay for an £800.00 pound advert you woudl need it to generate £16,000 otherwise your just paying for it out of all the other jobs you do.
  20. I didn't take any pics, sorry. Too busy confusing myself myself over what to do! Many systems were used, I made a 3:1 using my lanyard which worked well but too slow, some may have just lifted him off his footlock system, some hung him on there spliced end of rope and then used their body weight to lift him, this worked well but like I said he only weighs 30kgs or so.
  21. Other end for emergencies only. I climbed on both ends when I first started out but in those days we didn't have lanyards, if you need a lanyard then the other end of your rope did for that too. Once we started making up our own lanyards form old rope we would never go back to both ends again, unless like I said above for emergencies. If you need two anchor points in order to carry out a particular job then use two ropes for exactly the reason the Andy mentioned. Nugsy, your right!
  22. The fact that the dummy only weighs 30kgs or so made it easier! I guess points were awarded for a method that would also have worked on a 100kg patient. I set up a 3:1 pull system but it took up too much time!
  23. I thouhgt you were well up for coming frank?
