  1. As I only use SRT of initial access maybe that should be Single Line Up Tree.
  2. That actually would make some sense, its defining SRT for WP as apposed to SRT for access, which is in fact were the term SRT really comes from. In caving you descend a single line and return back up that single line "SRT". So, in my case, I often use SRT then switch to DdRT, but I never use SLWP. Thats quite a good description! By the way, when using SRT I prefer SRTc over SRTb. (I dont like basal tie offs!)
  3. Agreed, but unlikely to hold up with a 16yr old. If I employed a 40yr old who had been using saws all his life and I watched him work and in my experience I was happy he was competant then that would be fine, I'm sure, but a 16yr old no way! NPTC is there as a minmum standard so that employers know there is a level of competancy, and then they still have to observe that competancy as well, so its not a free ticket to any employement. So, in the opposite example, if I employ someone with NPTC and I see that they are in fact incompetant and unsafe then I would be negligent in continuing to employ them, or allowing them to use a saw. So, I agree NPTC is not the be all and end all of the situation, competancy is what is required by HSE whoever that competancy is observed/proven is not relavant, NPTC is one marker which we hope is sufficient but I have know plenty of cases that follower the latter example above.
  4. No there no legal requirement for him to be trained and competent, he's allowed to be untrained and incompetant! The legal requirement is for the employer. Even if self employed the person handing over the money is breaking employment law.
  5. Agreed, but SRT is not a tree climbing term, it's from caving and ind access. It suitable describe ms working on single line and the fact that the line is not moving (static) is obvious. And the word "static" should not be used to describe "not moving" as it already means low/zero stretch. DdRT denotes "doubled" and so by definition we know the rope is moving and no other explanation is required. Its not relevant that DdRT can or is done on a single line because its described as doubled. DRT is totally different again as its 2x SRT, ie it's two fixed lines. This can akso be achieved with a single line and again by definition neither if the lines are moving. I don't see where any confusion lies?
  6. When you say "static" do you mean as in "not moving"? I think theres would be some confusion as static usually refers to the amount of stretch in a rope (none) so a static rope or dynamic rope could be used in either SRT or Ddrt. The term SRT has been around for so long, way before any arbs used it, so I dont think its changeable. As for the double loading, maybe there should be something to donate SRT with basal tie off, as apposed to SRT choked round a limb? As one produces double load at TIP the other doesnt so they are quite different. SRTb and SRTc maybe? The small d, in DdRT is vital in denoting the difference from DRT which is a totally different thing, so some extra denotion on SRT would make sense, but SRT itself is very explanatory.
  7. You dont legally need it, but anyone employing you to use a chainsaw will need you to have it. You may be self employed but someone is paying you so they are your employer and they need you to have correct NPTC for whatever you are doing. Its not illegal as such, the police wont be along to arrest you. If you are offered work without NPTC and choose to take the work and you get the work done without incident or accident and you get paid then no one will be the wiser. You only "legally" need it when your lying in hospital with an arm/leg missing and you decide to sue the person who hired you, as they would be found to be liable for your injuries. So in fact they need you to have it to free them from said liability.
  8. I wish!!! Got the full results today, and the 500+ entrants turned out to be 371!! So thats nearly 40% And I was 24th in my catagory (mens over 40) out of 53 so thats 45% !!! My excuse is that these events are a bit more specialist and top half is good enough for now!
  9. We would have loaded her up straight away!
  10. Yep, swimming is the difficult bit, unless your a lifelong good swimmer but even then I know some who cant handle deep water, fish etc! This time last year I couldnt do a length of front crawl in the pool, the thing with training is very simple, if you do it you will get better. Nothing much more to it than that. I got better in 3-4 weeks and then joined a triathlon club so I've now had a winter of 1-2 nights a week of swim coaching. Just got back from the pool today and did 1Km straight off in 19.56 Anything is possible!

    Parkrun

Running barefoot on grass is the best!!
  12. Yeah but you go down the hills aswell! Any circular route should average out the same, what you lose going up you must gain coming down. Where I actually live there are hills on three sides and the fourth side is just boring/industrial and then farmland. The hilly sides are the lovely cotswold hills and thats where I always go biking, hils are great and I'd hate to live anywhere flat. The triathlon was at the cotwold water park which is lots of old gravel extracted lakes on the southern end of the cotswolds so by the very nature of the geography its flat there, perfect for a triathlon.
  13. Yes the ride was pretty much flat, some slight undulation but nothing you would call a hill. 20Km is 12.5miles and my split time for that was 38minutes, plus 8min for the swim, 20minutes for the run (im sure the run was less than 5km!) and 1minute for each of the transitions (from swim to bike and bike to run) makes 68 minutes. But I came 148th !! So room for improvement. Fastest was about 55minutes or there abouts, not sure yet. Over 500 competitiors in total.

I'm sure they do!!! That distance is fine to start with. Avoiding injury is key, otherwise you defeat the point! See how you feel tomorrow and if stiff and achey then net that pass before going again and jeep the distance down until it doesnt ache the next day.
  15. Yes, mine uploads to facebook automatically, you shouldnt need to press anything, look at the settings. The only main difference with the pro one is you can look for routes near you that others have done, plus you cna manually enter other things that you might have done. ANother app is called strava and its good for biking as it will compare with others that have done the same route. If you join strave on line you can then export the data file from endomondo to strava. Using strava as you ride is not as good as endomondo IMO, it suck battery even more and is not user freindly but the analysis after is better.

    Parkrun

Good on you! You dont need to train for parkrun, it is training for people who might not be motivated otherwise, it makes you feel part of something which is good. you wont come last! And your frst event is training for the next and so on.
  17. Well, today I swam 400m, bikes 20km and ran 5km in 1hr and 8mins!! Apologies for the lycra content of these pics!
  18. Cool endomndo is good! Did you buy the pro version (£2.99) or get the free one? I had the free on for a while and its fine but it sucks your battery more. The pro has a few extra features but not much different.

    Parkrun

Im guessing thats aimed at me mike! Theres some definate hotties at the cheltenham one and I guess the surrey one would be yummy mummy central!! Theres a particualr blonde that I always run behind (as shes at my pace!) But the ages would vary along with fitness! (all types of fitness) but weather you could pull at parkrun depends on you!
  20. When thing that might define if yo uare doing the right thing or not, is this, do you have workers turning at at yours in the morning? Regardless if they are self employed or not, that would be seen as running a business from home. If you work for someone else, SE or employed but keep your kit at home then obviously thats ok, every self emplyed person lives somewhwere. I do believe that having vans etc turn up and workers collecting tools, work sheets, chippers etc. might reasonable for that to uspset neighbours. If its illegal or not, I doubt it.

Well done! And good for you. Yes it is cool, being free makes it even better! 298 is a big turnout!!!
  22. Paul, I have a feeling Drsteeve is your clone!
  23. I did a 1500m open water swim yesterday. Water just warm enough now. Full wetsuit of course.
  24. Those trousers probably get more use than the leather cambium thing?
  25. No, no one uses them, they are an outdated american product from before the two ring cambium saver was introduced.
