  1. Sounds like you need to communicate better with the groundies Danavan. Make sure they know what you are doing, what your plan is for the tree. Control the site. If they are really crap tell them. Sort them out. Lowering your self is so undignified:lol:
  2. I know someone who uses used oil. I wouldnt want to use it and dont like to hear of it being used. Its nasty stuff for the enviroment. Very persistant in the soil. We use plantoil bio oil. Some once told me that you drink 7 litres of chain oil a year. Dont know how true it is, but ive always been glad to be using Bio.
  3. Physiology of woody plants is a fantastic book but quite academic. I wouldnt bother with the Agrios plant pathology book, there is little about tree pathogens covered in it. Its more focoused on the pathology of crops. I reccomend Up by roots - James Urban and the field guide to VTA -Mattheck
  4. whats the positioner like on a single line Tully ? can you lower yourself down on it ? I wil give your method of clipping the caribeaner back on the line.
  5. What are you going to do with the ash seeds ? I planted oak, beech and sweet chestnut last year. They all did really well. Im trying to decide what to plant this year. There are acouple of oaks that I want to grow from, but I also want something more exotic.
  6. Brilliant Lee !
  7. They look really good. How many plugs do you need to put in a stump ?
  8. I really like my Cinch on my lanyard now. Its great being able to use 10mm line in it. I like to tie an alpine butterfly in my lanyard when I clip it back on its self this makes it easier to unclip and you can keep the knot in the line if you are planning on using it on your front D for your next bit of positioning. When spiking you can take your cinch of your lanyard and put it on your main line (if its 11mm). Then you can tie a running bowline around the spar and you then have a great way of getting off the pole quickly in the event of an accident. The Cinch wont work on ropes like Tachyon or Imori, they are to big.
  9. I didnt see your thread before I wrote this. I feel a bit daft. Nice review by the way.
  10. ts really important to have a good pair of boots for work. Most employees will only have one pair of boots at a time and they need to be suited to all their tasks. For the Climber the boot needs to be suitable for branch walking and also stiff enough for spikes. My last pair of boots were the Klima airs. I loved them to bits and they lasted really well (3 years with 3 new soles). I did find them a little heavy and a bit slippery in the wet but still a fantastic boot. At the APF my boss dug deep and bought me a pair of STEIN Quest GTX boots and I am loving them:thumbup1: They are very similar to a pair of Boreal mountaineering boots I have but with chainsaw protection. I cant comment on durability but the build quality seems great. They are just as stiff as the Klima airs new but mellow after a couple of days. They seem alot lighter and the ruber on the sole is more lively and grips better in the wet. The thing I really like about them is the fit. You can draw the boot so snug to the foot with the laces. They feel great on spikes and the rubber protection is a nice touch. The only negative point I would bring up is when foot locking I catch one of the lace hooks repeatedly with the tread of the boot and you can hear this CLICK sound each time. This has slightly bent the lace hook but not to a point where its a problem. Im not going to hold it against the boot because I like them to much. Here is a link to the boots for you to drool over Fletcher Stewart And some pictures of them in action
  11. I would like a place if the price is right.
  12. Im a member of the Shaftesbury Tree group. I dont manage to get to every meeting because I often dont get home from work in time. Its good to keep Local authorities, Tree surgeons and Developers in check a bit. Im sure we have all discussed controversial tree works in our local area but how many actualy do anything about it ? They are also involved in lots of proactive projects. I helped plant a comunity orchard with them and they are setting up a comunity nursary growing trees of local provenance.
  13. The clearing work on castle hill was quite a talked about issue in Shaftesbury. There is a site that has plannig permission to build a number of expensive houses that backs on to castle hill. A lot of people thought that the removal of trees was to create better views for the houses that are to be built. Its tricky comparing the value of the site as an ancient monument and the ecological impact of removing trees from it. Are there plans to further clear any areas on Castle hill ?
  14. I dont remember it getting done. I live at the other end of park walk. I saw the nottices on the wall.
  15. About 300 meters from my house
  16. Nice one !!
  17. I went up on the Friday. Would have been great to say hi. Did you enter the pole climbing?
  18. I think the poles came from the Longleat Estate, Wiltshire. .
  19. I got bought some new Stein Quest boots by johnnyboy and I bought myself some really cheap Blaze from Buxtons that came with a free rope bag. Also got a Knife from Nordic outdoor.
  20. Lovely trees monkeyd:thumbup: I love old sweetchestnuts.
  21. I wonder how much thin dynema webbing you could wind on to a spencer logging tape ? You could then use a kong duck to adjust it.
  22. I Like it I also would like a retractable lanyard.
  23. It looks well dope. But why no info on it ? Where did it come from ? Can you pre tension it with the winch then snatch onto the outer bolard ? How big is it ? Can you wear it on your wrist to lower branches out of the tree like a web slinging spiddy man ?
  24. Your self employed and experienced so you have the freedom to choose what safty measures you take. Im employed so try to do things by the book. As a wirecore is provided I use it. Also use my main line as a back up, which is an important saftey measure. I dont mind using a soft stop to work on a pole but using a wirecore is advised in AFAG 401 and safe working practice. My employer has to provide one and I have to use one and make sure others are using one.
