  8. I have got rare flowers up in one of my woods i spotted muntjac tracks so i sent the keeper there and he got it. On friday i went there and i saw anouther one. Anyway a lady is keeping an eye on the flowers for me she phoned this morning and said they have been eaten:sad:
  9. Ancient woodland this is a tricky one, you should be working ancient woodland by hand with no heavy machines defo no diggers. My ancient woodlands i work small cants every year and burn the brash in very small fires as you go so not to scorch large areas. Then as i have got you will find in a year or two you will have primrose, early purple orchids, oxslips, wood anenomes and best of all the very rare ancient woodland plant herb paris. But if you leave all that brash or chip you still loose all the light to the woodland floor. We live in an age of machines but in an ancient woodland work as the old woodmen used to and you will keep it alive as it should be, and as for timber horse logging no compaction of the woodland floor. The rivers take brash for faggots to stabalize banks. hope this helps but ancient is like it is for a reason.
  10. Hi cerne did you go for the job? and did you get it? how are you?

  11. I have now cleaned the 08s and it started fine i asume it would be 25/1? and where could i get a bar and chain do you think?
  12. Hi buster that is the best Avatar i have seen some gob. I did not know burnt timber will dull a chain you learn something everyday. Same as you i file my chains and i have got a grinder and sharpen badly damaged chains on wet days i too bounce the wheel so they don't get to hot and the chains last right to the last, and you get your moneys worth:001_smile:
  13. Has anyone read or has a copy of the dictionary for managing trees in urban enviroments, by danny d draper and peter a richards. I was wondering is it any good do i need to buy this one or can i get along without it. It said the sheer range of arboricultural terms, conceptsand policies that appear in these pages boggles the mind so could be a usefull book to have i thought.

  15. Last year i found a dead muntjac in the square sheep fencing it tryed to sqeeze through got stuck and died:bawling:
  16. Last week i saw a muntjac mother with her baby, and i also counted 19 fallow coming out of the same wood. I have a new plantation planted 2 years ago and last week i picked all the tubes up and they have also eaten new shoots at the tube top. I have been asked to survey deer damage in my woods this year and if you look for muntjac tracks and the fraying to mark their teritory you will see it is only about 2 feet off the ground but yesterday i followed some red tracks and the fraying was nearly 2 meters high with roe and fallow in the middle. Fallow deer have learnt to open tubes. from what i have here on the estate fallow do all the damage to trees muntjac and roe eat mainly weeds and grass and browse hedgerows. Isaw a roe deer yesterday eating new hawthorn leaves.
