  1. Nice one for that - Aussies definately have a good sense of humour (and plenty of space) Always good to look back on something like that and think, well you gotta start somewhere. Brave chap thanks for posting.
  2. yeah thanks for the info, root excavation may be required before any remedial action is taken, as its in a conservation area a council Tree officer will help to make a decision on the outcome. Oh definately Sulphur Tuft, unmistakable.
  3. Just looked at a mature S.Chestnut with a ring of sulphur tuft fruiting bodies around it (no pics i'm afraid) they were emerging from the roots and collar. As this is a saprotrophic fungi and not parasitic I'm wondering if it is a secondary infection on roots that are mush or if there is nothing to worry about. The tree is on its own, the crown seems ok with only minor deadwood, there are some targets i.e. hotel, staff, tourists etc Any info would be good as I've not really come across this one before.
  4. Make a nice bar that oak! Drop of ale mmmm! Wouldn't be the first old timer without ppe on though. One of the guys I work with who's 57 needs to be reminded constantly to put his helmet on, then I just get 'Oh p**s off' in reply 'I'm not deaf yet' lol.
  5. Yes agreed i use the wolf garten 4m which is ok for most things, not as robust as some, but the lopper head is really good. A snip at 50 quid (the local garden centre sale)
  6. yeah i agree, double fishermans.
  7. Correct me if i'm wrong, but is it not the law that gives people 30 days to pay an invoice before being charged extra or being taken to the small claims? I guess its up to the individual company but I state that 'payment is preferred on the day of completion or within 30 days of reciept of invoice'. Now I may be misinformed, anyone know different?
  8. I wear a paramo velez smock, lightweight ,remarkably tough, wicking and very waterproof. A bit expensive and too good to buy and wear a brand new one to work so I scanned e-bay and got myself one for £85. The best piece of work clothing I've ever bought as I was always sweating my nuts off in other jackets and have tried loads. Couldn't recommend it enough guys ( oh! and the company is fairtrade for those of you who care)http://www.paramo.co.uk
  9. Just started trying taking the chain off and setting it in a vice to sharpen which I guess is better for the bar. I seem to get a really good edge this way, only practical in the workshop though. Having a file guide usually causes problems with depth, maybe its just me? Using a scraper tool with gauge/angles etc is really useful too. A safe saw is a sharp one I reckon.
  10. Interesting paper thanks for that. Mind boggling stuff really.
  11. I've just started up aswell this year, some advice is to talk/network as much as poss. Find people who sell logs and are gardeners etc They will find you jobs and you give them the wood etc
  12. Very nice shot High Scale, my groundie is always too late or early with those. Atree can I have your truck?
  13. Nice big Euc that, A Lopa - what type of Gum was it, any ideas?
  14. Yeah point taken, but when your boss gives you tall trees to climb with only a 35m marlow what do you do? Be inventive. After the 3rd tree of having to come down and re-tie I was getting a wee bit miffed. However,on a different note, deadwood is always good to burn and the guy who I dropped a load to and said 'No!' to any money asked me if I'd take a climbing line instead, turned out to be a 45m New England hi-vee, which I'm climbing on in the picture. Nice one Tony! Bizarre!
  15. Its worth trying if you have only a short rope but can get the throwline over a high branch, just made sure the running bowline was a good one. You can power on up but I did sit on the hitch at about 60ft up (I'm no spring chicken anymore!)
  16. Hi Steve, I'm just footlocking up the double line after taking the deadwood off the branch below me, on my VT. The day before I used a Kliemhiest on a single rope all the way up on a different tree, that was a little un-nerving. Yeah maybe my avatar could do with a change!
  17. Cheers Rich, if you look closely you'll see the not-so-deliberate mistake of the throwline and bag stuck in the other side of the tree from where I'm dangling, lol. Luckily we had a spare!
  18. Deadwooding some 90ft Turkeys this week ahh! What better way to spend a sunny day:001_smile:
  19. I love it! Spent this week deadwooding a bunch of 90ft Turkeys Once your past the fear factor which usually occurs on the way up, its just like working in any tree because you're concentrating on the work. Must take time out to enjoy the view though!
  20. Lime is better for turning than burning.
  21. I agree with Peter and MonkeyD, having two in a mewp is well useful if you can trust the operator, efficient with good communication even if the other person is just moving the bucket, its a bit less boring aswell!
  22. funny you mention it but I used it yesterday for the first time on a large sycamore and was well impressed with the efficiency. The only problem I found was when branches spun a couple of times it would get stuck. A bit of jiggling would free them up though. Maybe I needed to shorten or lengthen the attachment line. See what tricks you can learn from Arbtalk!
  23. I like trees but..........my wife wants to watch the end of the film we were watching last night and if I don't get off the computer my nuts will be strung up in an oak tree with the acorns!
  24. my groundies and I reckon the best waterproof you can get is the work truck!
