  1. did my first night work, line clearance 2 weeks ago.3 hours in cherry picker with 40/50 mile an hour winds and horizontal rain with a live lane of traffic on one side. That was one time I was glad to get my boots on the ground. A bit of Gore-tex and a paramo waterproof keeps you dry, but trying to see when you've rain coated specs is a pain in the arse!
  2. here's my few not sure on the blue gum bracket but the others are fairly common Armillaria and Laetiporus
  3. first one is definately a Boletus, Red not sure on the bracket though.
  4. I've an Ldv truck that is currently leaking diesel from somewhere in the depths of its transit engine, the discovery was made today after pulling up over a series of puddles on a rather well to do quayside, and watching all the pretty colours with my groundie. She said it was better than mud colour anyway.
  5. well I wouldn't complain about a bit of fany with it Chris
  6. Nice thing to do making your own charcoal, bit of ancient tradition there, would love to give that a try. ms 660 with a 36" bar (my wife agrees), and husky 372xp with 18" and 24" which does the bulk of it and I reckon it's similar to the ms 460, but just picks up quicker and sounds nicer raaa!!!
  7. yeah this one's the perkins diesel and i'm not too bothered at the mo about how fast it chips brash as long as its reliable, mainly it'll be for small garden stuff, leylandii bashing etc.If I start doing major clearance contracts then hiring a larger machine is fine.
  8. looking at perhaps purchasing a second hand machine somewhere and any opinions are well welcome. I've only used a bigger brand new vermeer chipper for a few days which was good and a new big ass grinder so not really sure what i'll be getting for 5K??????????
  9. anyone rate the old style vermeer 625i, looking at one on e bay at the moment
  10. Absolutely, my boss just bought the stihl combi system again, engine only(most powerful one) and first days trimming the new 4 stroke special cut out every 2 minutes esp when just getting to the top of the ladder. I then bought the husky combi system for my own business at 100 quid less, lol ,and am well pleased, 2 days use and never stalled once. The trigger's a bit mickey mouse but though. They are so easy to start and really well balanced.
  11. That looks really good, I suppose you can fit it on a petzl helmet strap,I am borrowing one from a local college media techy for a recreational climb of the Bryanston Planes in Dorset, the tallest hardwoods in Britain (possibly Europe) I can't wait. Hope its a nice day!
  12. They come from Tassie and Victoria in Australia and are fairly hardy, a reduction is possible if minimal and regular although the effects will cause some dieback. They don't like it too much. Its not Acacia baileyana which is less hardy and with finely feathered leaflets so it should be ok. Loads of them in Cornish gardens and they are prone to decay fungi esp. Ganoderma Burns lovely me ansums!
  13. Yeah sorry about the slang phenom, about 30% of my work involves repairing/dismantling macs. Here is the ring after a bit of sanding/oiling and I reckon its over 45, so its an application or someone else can do it!
  14. I'm looking at a job for a client in an area of blanket TPO 1966. The Macs to be worked on therefore should be less than 42 years old. Client has removed one of them and wants four more (in a tricky position) to be removed. The client would prefer not to have an application if he can help it due to the fact that the last application he made on trees that were younger than 42 they came along and slapped a TPO on them, for good reason in my eyes, they we're nice pines. The macs aren't great have been topped about 10 years before and were planted as a hedge, with targets and the odd rip here and there. Can I ID the age accurately from a ring that was about 6-8 ft up the single main stem of the felled one?
  15. Yeah i'm on about pg 60 now and really enjoying it.
  16. Thanks for the info Tony, it's exactly what I need at the moment with regards to explaining to a client that he won't get a 30% crown shrinking on his mature Quercus petrea due to the fact that it is a canopy that has reached its limit.i.e. no real pruning points lower than 4 or 5 feet from the tips. There's a 5 day notice on the tree, hollow at the base and attacked by Inonotus dryadeus and a 30% crown reduction recommended by the council, several targets including a house, but a very valuable amenity tree so sensitivity is a must. I'm just starting out on my own and would love to see more of the BS recommendations for tree work, can anyone help? I guess I should buy it really, but getting kit to do the job is top of the list right now.
  17. Mine is definately Monterey pines, when the resin covers your rope and is so sticky that you have trouble descending, and your scrubbing it off your arms with wire wool or such like. It's similar to getting dripped on by a freshly cut Moreton Bay fig. And chipping old dead wood from em is just nasty!
  18. That was very funny its the bane of my wife's life lol! I'll add, when the other half knows a few botanical names.
  19. If you constantly pull the rope through every few feet whilst ascending then it reduces the fall arrest situation. I find that I must keep sliding the VT cord up to ensure grip but I climb with a very loose 4wrap VT, my main issue is that if you are in a really tall tree the rope weight will loosen the vt which makes branch walking more difficult as well as standing on your anchor point. However, I've used it for 2 years and find it way better than the loop prussik system.
  20. Nice crown clean up Cerne, well done, many more where that came from I'm sure. We drive around with a 3 stage ladder on the roof all the time, it comes off about once every 3 months for some BT line clearance or similar. They have there uses! Window cleaning!
  21. Here's one I made earlier! Eucalyptus regnans Mt Baw Baw NP [/ATTACH]
  22. What would you guys consider a better form of advertising than paper ads? Is there anything that you'd recommend that's tried and tested other than the obvious word of mouth.
  23. Yeah, I've a very basic one with Trust cost me just over £500 and is 5 million pl, no employers liability, cos I only use subbies and don't do power lines railways etc
