  1. i was thinking of using a werner f64 winch, a winch designed and used on a u900 406. What extra would i require if i was to use this winch? I presumed that as it was original type equipment then just bolting it on would be ok! Was I wrong?
  2. I have an old u900 406 unimog which i am considering fitting a front mounted winch. I will be using it for general pulling/ recovery. I know that hydraulic winches are preferred by most, but i am only a part timer, and so will not be using it every day. My thoughts are that a pto winch is more likely to be best as it should be cheaper, and as it will be front mounted, and i have no ground anchor etc, i should not need the higher pulling force of a hydraulic. I would appreciate any thoughts on the best type to fit! All opinions welcomed.
  3. Have you still got your Wood Wasp? If so, any chance of a pic?
  4. Excellent vid Reg. New wide angle lens gives a great new prospective to the job. Thoroughly enjoyed the vids and can only say well done on the rigging methods employed and on the teamwork of your crew. Keep the vids coming:001_smile:
  5. Yeah, I wouldn't say no to it if I had the cash A vehicle like that, once repainted and liveried would definately give a good impression to customers, not to mention they do look fun to drive. I know what you mean about the web pages. I wondered why they were the same. Haven't ever dealt with withams, but bought some eqipment from jacksons years ago. Looks more professional now. When i was there it was like a scrap yard full of military toys. If only i had had more money at the time!
  6. I've got to agree. Its easy to think you will be calm as you enter the water, but panic soon sets in as the water rises onto the bonnet. This guy is definately no stranger to wading.
  7. Rb44 for sale at witham ex-military vehicle sales. http://www.witham-sv.com/infopage.php?ID=1855&Overide=1
  8. I know what incident started this petition. It was a child fatality in Heage in Derbyshire last year. A mother was walking her child down a quietish road to school which was just around the corner. There was a vehicle towing a trailer coming down the hill also, when the trailer detached from the car. The trailer ran onto the kerb and crushed the mother and child against a wall and lampost. The mother and child had no escape route! Child was killed outright, and mother recieved serious injuries, and was airlifted for treatment. This was a shocking incident. In my job I am no stranger to fatalities, but where this occured, was where I had been pushing my newborn son down the same pavement the day before! The trailer in question was the home made Mickey mouse type. Tiny wheels, wood sides, no brake, rusty, etc. IT WAS NOT ATTACHED BY A SAFETY CABLE TO THE VEHICLE. Therefore when it jumped off the cars tow ball there was nothing left to stop it. I am torn re the question of a trailer test, as there is plenty of legislation out there allready. THE TRAILER IN THE FATALITY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ON THE ROAD. However, if a test is the only way of removing these type of trailers then i'm all for it. I know that a test would cause few problems for arbtalk members as i am sure we all use trailers fit for purpose.
  9. A few trees brought down around miday. All were Ash, and many covered in ivy. Wind was gusting from nothing to 40mph. Sudden forces were snapping branches all over the place. By teatime gusting was over and no further damage.
  10. This is just a warning for all you Land Rover owners out there! Many of you own Land Rovers, for work and pleasure purposes, and also many more on this site are buying them all the time. We all know about stolen equipment, but at this time thefts of Land Rovers are at an exceptionally high level. This is specifically relating to the DEFENDER models (90 most common). I cannot divulge my sources, but I can give you an example. IN THE RELATIVELY SMALL AREA OF THE DERBYSHIRE PEAK DISTRICT, 70 DEFENDER LAND ROVERS HAVE BEEN STOLEN IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS ! By there very basic nature, the defender models are desirable, and used all over the world, and so there is a large market for shipping stolen ones overseas. However, to all prospective buyers, not all stolen ones go abroad. Many are RUNG (serial numbers changed/ground off). Be very careful when buying a vehicle, as if you purchase a stolen one, once it is discovered, it will be seized and you will forfeit any money you have paid for it. I don't wish to put anyone off Landy, but in these times you have to be careful.
  11. Another great tool on arbtalk! Keep up the good work Steve.
  12. BFG. Had a set on my old landy. Lasted 3 times longer than any other make I have used.
  13. Years ago when I briefly worked for a LA in the yards shoveling dried woodchip, we were very aware of the dust spores. Old workmen didn't need lots of H&S lessons, they knew from experience and passed on the concerns. I haven't been involved in the industry for years, and would be interested if basic health concerns/precautions are passed on by people nowadays, or is it left to office training. I think this links in with the thread about training from ARBOCOP as in the old days health issues like this were learnt in an apprenticeship.
  14. I do not work in this industry and so am limited on knowledge of cs tickets and other aspects, so forgive me for any comments I make. From reading threads on this site, my understanding is that there are many cs competency tickets for different skills. Anyone aspiring to work in the industry, obtains the cs tickets they want and then goes to work for experience etc. As stated i can only comment as to how qualifications/training is in other fields. I agree that further legislation would cause more cost/grief for people in the industry and will ultimately restrict some applicants. I feel you would still have the same problems as now such as highly qualified (on paper) people who could not effectively do the job. Paper qualifications are not everything!! However, i do like the comments made by TOM D. I agree there should be a ROLE SPECIFIC WORK RELATED TICKETS, such as groundie/tree surgeon/ etc. If my understanding is right, there is no such thing at this time, and anyone can call themselves anything, backing up what they say, by telling people they are qualified as they have NPTC CS tickets. In my job I see numerous people who claim to be professional tree surgeons, when frankly they have never climbed a tree, and you would not want them using a chainsaw near you! (to anyone who has no idea of CS tickets its hard to know if people are competent for the job there doing!). The public are not all stupid though! If there was a specific role qualification they would quickly ask for this. A role specific ticket would be a sign to the public that they are getting someone with the relevant qualifications for the job so that they are not getting someone claiming to be a tree surgeon who has not got the full relevant cs tickets, or a groundie who does not know how to rig for lowing large piece of timber. I feel this role specific ticket could be introduced easily into the industry with little or no cost, and would improve the professionalism and safety of arborists. These are comments made from observations from an outsider, and so any corrections or comments about what I have said would be appreciated.
  15. I have to agree with MONKEYD. I found the vid very interesting, but as a part timer with no experience of tree rigging, i would definitely like to see more vids of this type. I appreciate that this is everyday to some of you, but it is of vast help to people aspiring to be fully qualified climbers. Lets have a thread on it Steve. A vid explains better than just words for the inexperienced!
  16. christreeroot - This is what i wear for work - takes a kicking and keeps on ticking http://www.mwcwatches.com/shop/produ...products_id=55 Worn one of those watches for past 20 years. Has taken knocks and bangs that would have shattered other watches. Still going strong !!!
  17. I saw this a while ago on youtube. Still makes me laugh everytime I see it. Anyone fancy a go ? [ame] [/ame]
  18. Here's another one off youtube. [ame] [/ame] Predictable, but shows the force of a tree onto a car!
  19. I've signed. Something needs to be done about the prices !
  20. I've picked up a good condition husky 268xp. Anyone got a manual for it? Can't load the ones off husqvarna website.
  21. Sorry to hear about the theft. B*****ds should be disposed of like any vermin !!
  22. I'm glad to hear everything has been done correctly. I am sure you would not be surprised at how many times the police lose evidence in an investigation due to lack of specialist knowledge.
  23. Along with many others, having children also, my heart goes out to the family at this tragic time. I wish to back up the comments made by Colin. I am a member of this site due to my part time interests in your field. I am by no means qualified or an expert on tree matters. However, i can comment on the usual response by the police. When an incident like this occurs, local police officers will attend and create a scene, and log all details. This however is not like a car crash, where the police have the expertise on hand to expertly record the incident and obtain the evidence required. At an incident like this, like say a light aircraft crash, they will try and record visual evidence using photo's, and take witness statements, but they will have to defer matters further to relevant experts. This can often take a number of days to locate them and get them to start there investigation. This is by no means the fault of the police officers at the scene as they basically will have no idea about what has occurred. They cannot be experts at everything. In this incident the officer will be saying "the tree snapped in the wind". They cannot comment further as to why. Sorry to go on, but my basic point is that as Colin said, the evidence of the cause NEEDS to be retained. IF YOU ARE CALLED TO REMOVE A TREE FROM A SERIOUS INCIDENT LIKE THIS. FIND THE SENIOR OFFICER AT THE SCENE AND POINT OUT POSSIBLE CAUSES AND IF YOU ARE ABLE, OFFER TO RETAIN RELEVANT PARTS OF THE TREE FOR FURTHER EXAMINATION. I GUARANTEE THAT THE POLICE WILL THANK YOU AS THEY MOST LIKELY WILL NOT HAVE THOUGHT OF IT!!
