  1. I hate forums, they are full of self opinionated people slagging off other people. their companies or their products. Then I found arbtalk With a few odd exceptions it doesnt really happen here Great stuff great site keep it up
  2. Samson arbormaster for me it never milks and seams hard weraing, I just like the feel too
  3. I think thats Bull*** about Haix I am on my 4th pair of protectors in about 8 years and my latest are exactly the same as the first
  4. Komet do a hook that looks similar to that, I saw it at shows but never used one
  5. http://www.samsonrope.com/site_files/Arborist_Catalog.pdf
  6. I got some grass cutting and hedge trimming locally, hate the work but it pays the bills
  7. I wouldnt like a pair of socks as thick as my pants My feet stink enough already
  8. OK I'm up for a bit of anarchy Where do we start
  9. To add even more grey clouds to the gloom, most arb equipmnet comes in from Europe, I read the Pound/Euro echange rate has fallen by 20% in the past year. Does this mean all our gear goes up in price as well as all our fuel combined with shortage of work. Find me a stout bough and a length of rope gloom gloom gloom
  10. The commercial apect always has to be considered, are we talking about splicing for own use of to do splicing for others. IMO splicing for others has to entail some kind of quality assured system in place. Does this all get to complicated and too expensive and is this the reason we are where we are today
  11. Sure I agree, but it would be impossible to test every rope you splice due to the costs and of course no two hand splices can be exactly the same. MMmmmm Where to next ? I bet we rae still talking about this in years to come as I cant see who will take the lead in defining competency and how it can be achieved
  12. This thread became so interesting, I couldnt help digging a bit deeper to try to find out more info. It would appear that spliced eyes on slimbing ropes should have a seperate CE for the eye. The reason that most Arb ropes dont have this is because the standard for the eye was written around fall arrest and not ascending, decending or positioning. The splices used on arb ropes do not achieve the drop test requirements of the CE standard. Of course in tree climbing a rope is not used for fall arrest and that is why HSE do not persue CE certification on the eye, they only expect the eye to be spliced by a competent person. I hope that solves some of the mystery. The next step must be to determine what a competent person is, and how that is achieved
  13. To throw the cat among the pigeons, would training have to be given on all brands of rope as they wil all have different properties after being spliced
  14. Wouldnt it be a logical step forward for the AA to lobbly on its members behalf for some kind of standardisation on traing/teaching/learning splicing. after all thats normally what associations do for members
  15. How much did you pay ?? where did you get em
  16. Cheers for Ideas
  17. So it would seem that we are all agreed that their is no standard to splice to or to inspect to So should we all stop using spliced eyes and revert to knots and if so do we have to get the knots certified and inspected ? I wish someone from say the HSE would give some guidance on this
  18. I'm looking for a good but siple recue knife, anyone got any ideas ?
  19. Agreed again As far as I know Nod and several others have enough knowledge and experience to be commercial splicers but as said they cant issue certs so what does a LOLER inspector inspect to ??
  20. Once again agreed 100% Can someone please tell me if there is a factory approved splicer in the UK ?? and does he/she issue certificates with each splice To me it seems that a LOLER inspector can fail something on which there is no proof of certification possible. OK call me synical
  21. Agreed 100%
  22. So how many ropes are out there with acertified eye ? I dont mean CE rope with an eye I mean the eye has certification too ??
  23. IMO its not a LOLER indpectors job to check about certification his job is to look for wear or damage which would affect the safety of the item. LOLER inspectors should not think they have special powers sorry but its a load of b****cks
  24. Sounds a good isea but have they had 8 years history to prove it works ??
  25. I heard that the Arboa people will be at the AA show, if its true its the place to ask the questions
