  1. i would say make a profit mine pays for its self easily only have to do 1-2 stumps a month to pay for it
  2. you could get a loan for a grinder repaying £120 a month and get a machine for the cost of your current hire rate. plus you will push to get more stumps if you have your own machine IMO
  3. looks good... i think it may look better looking at it more form the front so it looks a bit less 3D
  4. i use these http://www.peltor.com/peltor.com/comm_main.cfm?platform=2%2DWay%20Radio%20Headsets pretty good but only on big trees where its noisy or with traffic otherwise i shout down before every cut if i cant see the groundie, if i can see him and its to noisey to talk i would make eye contact and point at or tap the section thats comming down so he can see how far away he needs to be
  5. Yeah but you get to the next job sooner as well if you use the crane
  6. used it all day today and I'm liking it, keep going to grab a bit higher up where the prussic used to be! did find it a bit close to the harness though. def need a pulley now. 50ft up and didn't get any slack feeding
  7. looks like a good shape mate. If the customer want more light but still wants the tree what other option do you lot suggest. thinning isn't gona do much if any thing.....? it still looks tree like and has a good shape - what more could you ask for
  8. oh OK thanks, i only used it for a few minutes. ill have to practice a bit more
  9. Does the lockjack require 'running in' before it will descend smoothly?
  10. didnt realize there were lockjack friendly ropes. is the Yale XTC ok with it? when i tried it the other day it certainly seems to release quick. any tip with it or is it a case of being gentle with the release?
  11. the 'branch' was basically half of a massive Horse Chestnut tree i was removing a broken limb from... i was thinking you wouldn't even notice if i took £30's worth off. The garage workers working a few doors up from us were saying the usual 'cut it at the bottom' and 'take off the top to about 6ft' har ha!
  12. Customer asked me today can you take about £30's worth of the end of that branch
  13. I'd love a copy please. i have PM'd you
  14. says vid not available anymore!! have you seen the no sac (no brain) one when they are trying to lift a whole tree next to a house with the crane, they cut and start to lift, the front of the crane comes off the floor about 15ft as the pic is far to heavy!! I'd be embarrassed to show that on TV
  15. i use my ladder when its needed. if its difficult to get to the first branch etc.. but dont take it everywhere
  16. are you an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor Trustmark Registered International Society of Arboriculture Certified? because you need to be to register
  17. don't think you'll be able to re-tip them if you have sharpened them a lot because you will have ground off the 'seat' for the plate. ive seen some on ebay some time ago not sure if they are still there
  18. ive never seen a Carlton cutting but arnt the sandvick wheels supposed to cut better than the stick teeth?
  19. Ive got one, wouldn't say its crap.
  20. I can see the shape your going for, its going to look sweet once you've finished. textbook 10% reduction
  21. Costumer says looking at a 90ft monster "I would do it myself but my ladders no quite high enough!!! I'm thinking (i'd like to see you try) Costumer phones saying "ive got this tree i need removing its about ... high and .... wide how much will that cost, I'm thinking (how the f**k do i know without seeing it)
  22. how many drive links on a reel?
  23. If you dont mind me asking? what qualification did you need to go for the job?
  24. i had to do a job the other week on a tpo'ed Yew spec'ed by the TO or consultant. A small crown lift then tyeing up the lower branches to allow for machinery to pass under.
  25. I had to look in to it for joining a trading standards scheme. If your just doing tree surgery then you shouldn't need one (thats what the EA told me and im happy to belive it), look here http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/waste/1019330/1334884/1721340/?lang=_e
