  1. I was talking with a fella who was using a truck syle mounted lift, like what bt use and the like...he was in the city, with no-one on the floor to rescue him...should it malfunction..or if someone nicked the keys as he was somewhat remote you might say......Sadly, there was no start from the bucket...could be embarassing, remember your phone would be my advice!!!lol
  2. I would say so .....it decays the undersides of stem roots, a soft white rot leading to ductile fracture....the color indicates the fruit body is young......What targets are there etc...?
  3. http://www.easthants.gov.uk/ehdc/healthsafetyweb.nsf/webpages/PUWER-LOLER
  4. Actually they will all come under separate legislation as it applies to Mobile lifting equpt, self-propelled lifting equpt blah blah..... Its n academic argument anyways as puwer require it be done, loler sets the standard....I told you it was a nightmare eh....!
  5. Ive posted this before...they are great spikes imo.Perhaps the best aspect is that they are not adjustable ( length ) which means matey couldnt borrow them even if he wanted too...! Try passing the velcro strap directly around the stem/shank instead of thru' the eye, which has a tendency to twist and turn and get itself in an awkward position which will frankly result in a premature failure of this part of the gear.... ( Sorry tp plug treebuzz Steve...there is thread on the site re replacement buckle innovation there if you look hard enuff!! lol )
  6. Mmmm...somehow its always the "boss " who comes up with the hair brained, hair raising schemes eh!! ( like 2 in a basket )....Nightmare! Sorry to jack the thread Tony...no I havent read it......
  7. depends on the size of the bucket and the skill of the operators frankly...be they mewp or chainsaw operators.....
  8. I,ve worked two in a bucket over roads and such...cut and hold....plain bloody stupid frankly...never again! Presumably, a ticket is required? IPAF is in muddle frankly. although commercial arboriculture is not the only industry sector, the sheer " choice " ( for want of a better word ) as to the type of ticket obtainable is just "out there! " It would be an interesting read maybe if its been designed for the industry but the legislation which preceeds it can only dictate the terms applicable , however misguided that may be in your opinion!!
  9. It means they are a Rt Hon.. then I guess!!
  10. Hey Mr Bish, I have seen Yews doin' this around and abouts this year....certainly wouldnt want to see you make any hasty decisions! Mature Yews, even adjacent to one another...1 affected, the other apparently fine and dandy....Not certain if this is the same thing as the one you are looking at? I would recommend removing the sleepers perhaps . If your client is loaded, sell them the the decompact et al...but I think it may well recover with little or no intervention frankly. ( famous last words!! ) This comment assumes the root zone has not been trenched and the soil root environment trounced by " developers "
  11. Looks like " failure "....machanical weakness? Any pics of the fallen piece atall??
  12. Ive seen precious little real autumn color as yet anywhere else!!!
  13. I mean Natural England dont I !!<><><><><
  14. Felling allowances will be included in planning if the developer has done his homework...Why a licence is required!!
  15. oh yeah....fun and games.....
  16. Again, most the literature I'm reading indicates the Pholiota is at the base...but they are canny creatures n.est pas? It is plausible that it is not present as primary, parasitic fungus......If present as white rot, always in conjunction with a another pathogen. the stem shows signs of stress typical of white rot...I could be wrong!!?
  17. English Nature will give you the heads up ...
  18. you need to tip toe about abit if they are really there...it is actually not so common that they use trees....not in preference over better habitats anyway....You will learn to look for the signs....if you find them you will be into lowering limbs...I recommend doing this anyway should you have reason to think they are present.
  19. you will find that often the single males will use tress ocassionally...they can be used by as many as ten at different times....I recommend doing your own inspection b4 you work yourself, to cover yourself from accusations that you havent concerned yourself about the issue....
  20. Christreeroot will tell you I,m sure...but you need to let the snco local to you know...b4 the works commence....officially. If you disturb a roost you will need to halt works asap and contact snco definitely....
  21. 20,000 sq m......what is that in real money?? If its 80 hectares , you gonna get burned!! 40 man days 80 hectares each man 2hectares per day ( 1 hectare = 2.47 acres ) 1 man x 5 acres a day......I wouldnt do it if you paid me!! But then I havent walked the site....!
  22. Cross referencing is essential imo also.... The Manual of Wood Decays in Trees is a significant book for all arborists imo. Afield guide is also very useful when out and about... Agreed, online research is invaluable.... Makes me wince abit when people are failed on certs for tricky ID.s when if in doubt, I would not hesitate to look it up, refer to others or send samples for id.... To be honest, I dont know whether there really is just one handy book....Phillips is good....you might want to add his id website to your favourites...works from simple scientific key to search... http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/
  23. Or you could check in with land use in surrounding locale...establish precedent ( conservation areas/biodiversity whu) planning usage..proposals from lpa pending perhaps...work out what fits the area best and correlate with best scenario for resource ( ie, potential that woodland represents...my guess is that its pretty versatile and your decision could steer the eventual development trend for the wood anyways...) Consider the recent showing of woodland/forestry in UK on T.V. where the view that woodland could/should be made to return a revenue from public use ( recreation ? ) There are a number of grants available to woodland owners for conservation/biodiversity/education schemes.... There must be a number of angles you could look at this from!!
  24. Depending on conifer species...they can be useful "nursery" tree affording broadleaf successful establishment
