You should check out " Son of Dave "...... http://www.myspace.com/thesonofdave
  4. I dont know how long expanding foam has been widely available...at least 20 yrs as I first used it about then.... I have also seen cavity filling as I'm sure many of you will have, at Cambridge botanical gardens....It is concrete in that case....I'm guessing for stability. Surprisingly unscientific....again I dont know what date such "installations" were created but it would be interesting to find out!!
  5. The foam is not a recommended treatment...I mean, whats the point or idea behind it eh? However, it was thought to be a good idea...and as Shigo points out in Modern Arboriculture, it is the least offensive material if it really must be done....I think they thought that water was a bad thing and it would rot the wood. We now know this isnt true and that it can help by creating anaerobic conditions in infection courts thus preventing pathogen success. ( aka wetwood)
  6. Dont worry, David is like Martini where coro/fracture pruning is concerned..read this for further info coronetcuts_naturalfracture.PDF
  7. nope!!!

  10. Plain greedy!!!
  11. I dont think the stems are dark enough for Flammulina eh?? ( or two-toned wood-tuft kuehneromyces mutabilis..? ) They look very waxy..or wre they wet...almost looks like pholiota?
  12. No, cedar not specified.....but one look at the needles would confirm it ...... There was a report this year of dieback and browning in conifers (spp)...The alice holt lot reckoned they pick up on so many new diseases every 2-3 yrs or so and went on to report an increase in their findings in the last few years...hence their report and the association with climate change. In particular they claimed to have been aware of a pathogen that is affecting our beloved leylandii for several years...just that it was reported in the media as a " new discovery" which is not strictly true. I'm guessing the instances of the disease are more numerous....I will try and dig out the detail or you can search yourself the Alice Holt Lodge archives...
  13. Check it out...
  14. With regard to Ropeman, the new version with tiny spikes would be perfect for this application, the old rope chopping versions less suited. The advantage with the tiny mechanical adjuster is that you dont lose any length off the bridge. I'm not convinced tbh...yes, the loss of length is an issue in such a small space but the mk2 ropeman is by Wildcountry's own stipulation a "more aggressive" cam; the intention was to deliver a more versatile cam that would happily work with rope from 8.5mm-11mm......this they achieve by making the thing worse by all accounts...! You are right in so much as the reason for my distrust of the ropeman however....the mk1 ( 10-11mm) scares me for just that reason. I will have to go and get me a mk2 now, just to find out!!
  15. 1/1000 apparently.....
  16. Great knot....crap video......!
  17. Excellent....dont like the ropemans much...this is a system I could use and easily/cheaply replace if needs be....
  18. I closely scrutinised my TM when I first got it, cos of the recalls and obvious teething problems they were having....and compared it to earlier harnesses. They are distinctly improved and as I have just learnt, hand checked by quality control...Dont get me wrong, I am no expert on the materials science and I hasten to add I have had no concerns with my harness...but I kinda felt that the webbing might still come in for some heavy wear from the hardware on the belts....again cos of the design of the rings..... I have used this harness alot less intensively than any other belt I have owned....so will be interested to see how well it stands up .
  19. Steve, posted times are runnin' 1 hr ahead....then I logged in & they appear right...log out and the same posts indicate the 1 hrs difference...curious eh!!!!?
  20. Good question Mark...I'm glad someone has pointed this out...There has been some discussion about this issue on UKTC also where the notion of nptc style training was floated if thats the right turn of phrase. Clearly , it would have to be established whether and how damage may occur and such but not what i wanted to say here. I'm glad you have asked this question re repeated investigations...There was recently a post about a beech which it seems has been dug up more times than you can count...surprise surprise, the root/fungi lifecycle is now quite different ...So indeed, do we really know what effect such repeated investigations are responsible for??
  21. Sorry if I've failed to grasp this concept......I didnt think anybody was thick enuff to try such a stunt.... I have trouble enuff trying to get the concept of not drop starting ground saws across to inexperienced learners......it is inevitably met with the response..." yeah but..."...I stop listening at this point...Boys will be boys I reckon.....
  22. Yo -Yo I do indeed...if the brake is on, it will be no more hazardous perhaps even less so than placing it between ze knees....or fiddle arse about getting position where it is possible to rest weight on the body whilst yanking the chain......I think you need to be sensible about this...Dont yo-yo start at head height......away from you sort of thing . It is not practical to only allow saws started by groundsmen, this is deffo rubbish.
  23. Raynaud's...white finger...same thing...havs may be connected with carpel tunnel syndrome but to be honest they are different issues resulting in "similar " symptons is all.....
  24. Mate...its been sorted....pay attention!!
  25. As far as I know, one hand start up a tree is accepted in NPTC....perhaps someone will correct me.....
