  1. " Regarding the complexity of interpretation, we have a full training scheme and cpd scheme to help people with this..... " I thought that I'd read your training scheme was offline atm to any but those already trained by you.... " We do not just sell the cameras and dump you in the mire...." I should hope not; this would be a recipe for disaster for all concerned I fear. Was recently in conversation with an LA bod who was blissfully unaware of the cameras' capabilities., preferring instead to put his money on the PICUS ....
  2. Not particularly clear from that but suspect that the inference is by default , that they may well NOT be covered..... " Can you get the TO to update the existing order...." I think I would take this course of action...at least you could seek clarification from the LA as to current &/or intended status of the order. Who knows what may be occurring behind the scenes so to speak..
  3. Some information about IR imaging units..... 12Things_Booklet copy.pdf
  4. Chemical controls ( herbicides etc) are very bad for bees as they are very sensitive to such things...Indeed, chemicals that are approved in the uk have been banned elsewhere in europe, eg France, precisely because bees cant handle it......Glynn Percival was merrily prescribing this an' that ( turn of phrase ) whilst the truth is that bees would most likely be devastated....Dont want to start another bunfight! I want to start a colony in my back yard...My brother has one ( or two ) on his flat roof in the city...they love it!!
  5. I am not so sure you are right about that although I am happy to be wrong....It feels intuitively to be a bit rich.... One of the reasons surely, the comments that appear in the bluebook are there is precisely because of the difficulty there maybe with proving a case due to lack of evidence...Indeed I found several such examples with a quick search...attached below ( for real saddos only I would suggest ! ) Brown v Michael B Cooper Ltd This is what underpins the guidance, again in the bluebook, that these orders are, in the Secretary of States view, to be reviewed or used as temporary orders. As it is only best practice guidance, you are of course at liberty as an LA to pick whichever fights you feel you must! As a temporary order, there would indeed be little point in producing a survey when it is not a prerequisite of a TPO. Photos are I am sure, all that may be necessary. I have included only one example due to file size limits....try this. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Brown+v+Michael+B+Cooper+Ltd&btnG=Google+Search&meta= and click on the first link....cheers. pl051013_-_5-2_(i)_-_Tree_Matter_-_228_Ninfield_Rd_Bexhill.doc
  6. " My point about the detailed tree plotting within an Nepia's Area Order is that if the TO had gone to the trouble of plotting all the individuals and groups within the Area - why confirm it as an Area!?!?!?! He's already surveyed it?!?!?!? ..." Perhaps he was upgrading the order from area as this is what the legislation indicates as necessary...cant say I understand how that might have failed to have happened .....?
  7. " It seems a fair question made after my last post re how the LA would prove/disprove anything at a later stage without a map: any thoughts? Counting the rings left in a stump can't be the definitive way of telling whether a felled tree was pre or post Order. ...." Exactly my point mate, well spotted. It cannot be made to work for the LA's in the event of a dispute after the fact...ie, trees removed. Whos to argue their "existential " whereabouts if they were never logged...and worse still the headache that could culminate in proving their age at the time of their "illegitimate" removal so de facto their inclusion in any said order.... It seems to me that the tree officer has indeed seen the implications of the order and acted quite properly, discharging his duty by providing a comprehensive record of the scope of said order... LA's would be well advised ( in an ideal world ) to use GIS technology to log their respective tree stock in as comprehensive a way as possible....?
  8. Do you know if they are advertised somewhere? http://www.horticulturejobs.co.uk/jobs/arboriculturist-jobs The arb supervisor money is a couple of grand less than I'm currently on, otherwise I may have fancied it! Very poor money......
  9. Good call mate.....and I thought it was liquorice allsorts..!
  10. " If you have an Area Order,it would be odd and unesseccary to mark the individual trees... " How then can an LPA hope to have any record of the order beyond the paperwork that relates to it? ( ie.....the trees that are covered ) In theory you could have a dispute after the fact where a tree(s) have been removed ...
  11. Ben, I have just been looking thru info from G.Perivals seminar and alas, whilst reference was made to mycor innoculation and trial studies, this has not been included in attached pdf's....Perhaps this will emerge in due course....I would suggest keeping an eye on EssentialArb publications.....?

  12. Looks like a Phellinus....Dont quote me on that mate please...NZ's fungal community is not something I know a great deal about tbh.....!
  13. I laughed at that expert too. Recommending the tree needed dead wooding? As soon as he opened his gob I figured he'd not looked the tree.....covered in ivy. The real rogue traders were the beeb...!
  14. Exactly the way I see it Frank...to an onlooker they came across as being the butt ( no pun intended ) of BBC plonkers grasping at moral high ground or a protracted tradesmans' disagreement re tree care...a bit like Arbtalk on an average day!! I didnt think it was clear or obvious atall but another vehicle for an old TV recipe....Oh well; they say " no publicity is bad publicity! "
  15. Really? I didnt even think it made good television....The BBC is patronising and a little bit crap these days imo.... ( whinge, moan etc ...I know! )
  16. I've had a feeling for a while that this is a tad strong, and have now heard it from both Arborjet in the States and Glyn Percival from Bartletts here in Blighty, that Psuedomonas is treatable. Chemical bark sprays, sapwood injections etc..... I find this very scary as I did the somewhat "glib " attitude of Glynn towards the ectotoxic issues..it was perhaps no more than an impression I hasten to add ... http://www.moraybeekeepers.co.uk/N&Views/imidacloprid.htm http://www.britishbee.org.uk/articles/imidacloprid.php http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Chemical.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35730#Ecotoxicity I dont know how you go about balancing the equation re tree loss versus the nasties but something just doesnt feel right when you witness the Bartletts fire engine gas stoked and ready to go with all that chemical...and they claim to drench whole trees with this system.... the answer must lie in a more holistic approach.... imidacloprid-journal-of-pesticide-reform.pdf

  18. Perhaps you can check in with the Barchams tree nursery in Cambridge Ben. They are producing some material on this subject for delegates that were at Glyn Percivals seminar yesterday. The seminar included amongst other things, trials with mycor innoculations blah blah etc.....No harm in asking eh...? BTW, we were asked politely for a donation at the end of the day by way of thanx as the day was a freebee...all proceeds to childrens charities...Make the right noises and Im sure you will get what you need.....
  19. By design Tom yes, they are indeed....if this is no longer the case we refer to them as being no longer "viable "....My point being that bird crap is not a requirement for germination or establishment....
  20. robustus is so rare as to be extremely unlikely mate....red list, spotted only a handful of times in the uk....worth doing a bit of reasearch if fungus is your thing tho' http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=phellinus+robustus&btnG=Google+Search&meta= Nice pics Hannah...
  21. Mmmmm......does seem characteristic of Phellinus..Oh, sorry, you said that. TBH, I have never seen Phellinus tuberculosis in person but this is looking good from reference material to hand.....the striking colors are well, striking....! look at the way they stack up...and compare with fomes for yourself ( plus host and situ fits...)http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=fomes+fomentarius&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
  22. Dont mean to cast "nasturtions" on your explanation Tony and I am sure this may well be the mechanism for establishment of mistletoe but I have always understood that seeds are a self contained entity. Capable of sustaining initial development ( production of roots and designed with two small leaflets...I forget the scientific term atm ) but crucially able to make available the energy required for growth in first stages..... The seeds are apparently quite sticky and are wiped by the birds from the beaks ( this requires some persistence ) It is this mechanism that lodges the seeds in place...although as you say, bird crap probably plays its part also.... When in the Australian wilderness parks and such I was aware of a great deal of mistletoe in the euclyp sclerafell in certain regions.....
  23. Maybe nothing new to some of you but thought I would post this anyway. Compound rigging.....but in reverse sort of thing. I believe an important aspect of compound rigging is the load/work/energy mathematics.....(I am not liking the Z brace myself)... Apart from anything else, there is alot more hardware to have to inspect and so maintain....Does anyone involved in the loler side of things have any insights as to how this can be successfully achieved insitu ? Funny, all responsibility for accidents/failures arising as result of the suggestions are emphatically denied by the author..... (Yes I know this is normal practice..) All the same, we continue to anticipate the advent of the revised BS3998.....The author of posted document is also chair of the consultation commitee to BSI....enjoy! Compound bracing.pdf
  24. Seems a bit pissy of them to want a climbing test...I would have thought your npts certs and description of experience should be enuff,,,,? Maybe they had a couple of ropey candidates/experiences themselves...All good advice as above...Two points of attachment when using the saw and yes...a lanyard is fine for this.
  25. " Still waiting for Nod's course......." Only just read this thread....Nod contacted me recently, maybe 24 feb, asking was I interested as he was close to cancelling another one....Nothing since......I guess he cancelled?
