  1. ..I give up... I have just come from the a local hospital in Norwich, on Bowthorpe road. There is some development going on there. Being NHS Trust, I wouldnt like to say what about crown immunity or whu..As a development project however, I would be very surprised if there was any way all proposed works were not subject to appropriate planning prodedures- Anyhoo.....I cannot get hold of the tree protection officer til monday, ( I have personal reasons to find that a bit of a weird one:sneaky2:) I have just had to witness some builders/technicians, whatever you wanna call them, compacting the RA of a semi-mature copper beech with a vibe plate........This was surely never signed off?
  2. Dean said "My woodland looks like world war II took place in it. Rootball piles dotted here and there, deadwood left, hangers left, split branches left and pegged open......" Ask to see the Arb Method Statement for the works if you feel it was badly executed..... Without gettin' involved mate, I want to point out that there is quite a bit of policy that relates to this one issue. This is where you must direct your attention to address any grievances... David said "there is always someone walking in the woods and they say they are lost! but what would happen if a branch fell on them?...." It would never , in all liklihood, come to court. If it did, I'm betting that you will be not found liable..... Dean said "It's about time judges started putting their foot down and throwing some cases out, then billing the complainent the expenses....." I think you would be surprised at the number of so-called "cases" that get settled out of court...which to me is an altogether more elusive animal. In these cases, insurers will end up paying out for the wrong reasons, for weak cases perhaps, and oftentimes with arbitrary sums.....( ie, not like 1x leg = £X ) At least when a case gets heard, there needs to be some sort of coherent debate around issues of relevance, If not, it will dismissed and believe me, its not a cheap thrill to go to court..... "Yes there are genuine cases, but I reckon a very large percentage of cases could have been avoided by taking a little more care, being a little more aware and watching where they are going. ..." And I presume that you are so freely able to express these views in this thread, about this one incident, whilst I might add, little is I think known publicly about the accident, because you clearly see that the woman is at fault....
  3. " Although if you own a woodland you must be brusted............" People own woodland for many reasons I m sure ( as if u need a reason) Avoidance of inheritance taxation is one such incentive!
  4. Heres an image of the destructive force of nature.....! Cows electrocuted in a lightening strike as they sought shelter under a tree....
  5. Chainsaw..voted meanest mean machine of them all....! Ha Ha .... I used to work with a Softrak...they are great til you sink it or the tracks come off!! The finest off road all terrain rubber track low ground pressure vehicles
  6. Rain I guess.....Makes me wonder what this "axiom of uniform stress" is all about.....? I suppose someone will argue this is "self-optimisation"....perhaps it is in a kinda way....... Most often reckon to see these large lower limbs bow to ground level, gaining support into the bargain .... edit: jinx david!
  7. "....about as easy as uploading a picture on here .....": How bigger deal is it to allow TIFF (tagged image file format ) Steve?
  8. "......anyone suggest any other managments techniques for DED?....." Burn your brash.
  9. Hey....I despise fixed penalties but rarely get away without paying.....
  10. Its a tough job for sure,,,few women ( & actually alot of blokes) are not cut out for it........
  11. "...i think. Its dripping on the guys driveway is the other problem. ..." Pesky trees......think shigo........think water pump....."Modern Arboriculture" Bigger wounds wont solve the issue......cheers!
  12. Tony is right....the best course of action may well be to pursue the legal obligations derived from the order.....Sends out a very bad message to owners, neighbours and arborists alike.
  13. If the tree isnt showing physiological signs of stress...and remember, you are only getting a snap shot of the process I presume ( seen it twice in a year..? ) I wouldnt recommend doing anything...Ill rephrase that, I d recommend doing nothing!! Hope this helps.
  14. Hi, Sorry, no pics at present......
  15. May not answer your query entirely but these links are good and explain some basic science..... Stomata - Encyclopedia of Earth Stoma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  16. Check these out for more info...... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/436-national-hedge-laying-championship.html http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/5800-hedgelaying-assesment.html Hope this helps......I m not a hedge layer myself. A dispute looms however where the skilled tradesman is trying to extort £32.00 per metre for a piss poor job..( ie, so far it seems 1/3 has failed to come back post laying....) I am tempted to slag them off but Im not gonna get dragged into it....at least until I get the facts sorted.....
  17. "It is my understanding that Airspades can potentially pulverise the soil destroying the peds. Fine roots can also be desicated in the process and michorhizal associastions effected....." Im not sure about pulverising the soil as such but certainly it alters the structure.....Embollism being introduced has been discussed I know and undoubtedly, mycorrizhal assoc' may well be affected. As for dessication, these fine root hairs are I believe quite quickly regenerated.(Oops...generalisation....) Glynn repeated his assertion that the airspade is effective against honey fungus again today..... Pretty much think the terravant is next to useless and may infact make compaction worse by simply lifting layers of the soil profile and dumping it down again . Limited experience myself but it kinda makes sense..... "Like I said in my last post , radial trenching or vertical mulching is my preferred method, but some wont have it and so out comes the deep root aerator........" Makes sense I guess....like Xerxses...what is it ?
  18. There has been something made of the benefits to soil health from the use of airspades....It would be sensible to regard generalisations however with a degree of scrutiny but this must go for terravents also...... Perhaps Lee will expand on the science behind his promotion of the system he uses....?
  19. IF it is weeds at the base of the trees/shrubs, I am in agreement with most all the comments ...Keeps down weeds/competition etc...BUT, and I know it dont appeal to everyone or appropriate for all sites/situations....I am a great believer in long grass and minimal "husbandry" as it mitigates the effects of drought....
  20. Got ya'...thanx buddy!
  21. Mmmmm...I am with Colin on this one...tho' not obviously on the honeymoon thing. Christ, what do you take me for....wait, that means I agree with Skyhuck......OMG! tah.
  22. Hi People, As the title suggests, I am interested to find information regarding hedgelaying . If there are any of you who are accredited(?) or can furnish me with the facts vis a vis the different training schemes and/or professional bodies in the uk, please post. I am trying to mediate a dispute that appears to be getting out of hand. I am aware of numerous, regional, society groups...I am in East Anglia. To whom might I direct my enquiries in an attempt to establish some basic facts and figures regarding this skill? Thanx for your attention to this matter.
