  1. "...A control avenue of Horse Chestnut were left untreated whilst a parallel avenue of Horse Chestnuts were all treated......" Its better than thumb twiddling or hair tugging for sure...Just thinking out loud for a moment.....If I was given the choice of avoiding a colleague for the duration immediately following their feeding on garlic...I would frankly. The control outlined does not appear to have a robust enough control imo. Please remember that the constraints applied to the testing of these and other , so-called "organic" solutions ( excuse the pun) ahead of production and/or more widespread use , has been waived to greater or lesser extent. Just playing devils advocate for a mo'......... And yes, it would seem that Glynn Percival was claiming that the problem was not beyond the wit of man.....He was tho' fairly clear that the controls needed would have to pre-empt the manifestation of the disease......
  2. Its a difficult thing to make hard & fast rules beyond the obvious statement that "best practice" should be deployed.....if you knew the casualties rope to be defective, you wouldnt/couldnt use it in a real rescue with any certainty or confidence. Best practice advice must be in line with training which , I believe, would have you install a rescue line.....Does this help?
  3. Not something you have time to ponder a great deal on in a rescue situation I suspect....damned if you do, damned if you dont I guess!
  4. The Forestry Commission , whist not responsible for amenity tree stock populations, are the foremost Govt funded body with an interest in our tree cover.... Heres a link to some research re Climate change Forestry Commission - Climate Change - Information Pack This tho' a summary of facts and figures from the same research... 18_facts_and_figures.pdf
  5. Does this help.....? I would also suggest maybe getting a copy of "Veteran Trees-Risk and Responsibility".....currently out of print apparently although if you contact the AA, they will send you a copy for a small fee.
  6. "I have never been able to find much info' on the significance of the decay it causes though - so perhaps someone here can enlighten me?...." Refer "Fungal strategies Wood Decay in Trees " ( Schwarze, Engels Mattheck-Springer press isbn3-540-67205-2 ) Page 131- 135....(page 134- sub para N0 1 in particular) Hope this helps.... The significance was not made a great deal of during the PTI for example, although the fungus is of significance within europe....If you are meaning the risks associated with the decay, it is perhaps regarded as quite slow. Advanced decay will result in windthrow in all liklihood according to my studies/info-the paragraph I refer to has further information on this aspect in particular....( Sorry if you have already read this reference...)
  7. If i remember rightly, this is where i picked up an infraction from the moderators...probably for having a big gob ..... nonetheless, I appreciate the posting of pictures that show the tree in leaf......It all helps to promote ongoing discussion........
  8. I have worked more coppice than I care to remember...restoration work mostly. All on SSSI's or Ancient woodland using a range of equipment & techniques....If I can offer any advice I will. Take it easy.
  9. Perhaps that should be " New tangled bracing technique" Good post!!
  10. QTRA, whilst not perfect, is a good system IMO.
  11. Mmmm...according to Marcus B-T " The cardboard not only is a physical barrier but also because it is high in carbon but low in nitrogen tends to lock up the free nitrogen......" I didnt find I could make much sense of the science he recited ( page 8 of this thread ) although he was clear that finely chopped barley straw covered with thin cardboard or paper and an organic mulch was the way to go.....IIRC Edit.....Sorry to say it looks finished David...cant win em all I guess!

  13. Its that expression " slapped " raising its ugly head again.....surely not! Torbay Council defends tree-chop builders | Arboriculture News | Horticulture Week Without knowing the tree, at 150 yrs old, I might have thought it was worth keeping....perhaps it was not deemed as having much useful life expectancy....seems to have upset those hippy dippy tree lovers tho' !
  14. Avoiding the question for a moment...is that brown powder like dusting on the buttress aside your hand... a rust or spores from a ganoderma? Are there any other fruit bodies hosted on this tree? If an ID is gonna be possible, its always a good idea to expand as much as you can the situ and circumstances yeah.............good luck.
  15. Its like chinese whispers or something...... "I got the impression that the concept of brackets inreasing water loss - as a method of making a more favourable environment - was quite a recent idea, rather than an established 'fact'?....." I heard it related as "removing" fruit bodies would cure the tree of the infection. This was supposedly a method of control which had earned its place thru' the tests of time. Laughable frankly and I understand this may be where the notion took root. It was rightly dismissed by the scientific community- Lonsdale was simply projecting ,if thats the right turn of phrase, that it may indeed have basis in science for the reasons we are discussing...which suggests that the way in which the premis for the enquiry was related to the arboriculturists perhaps lost something in translation...Sooo now, thats clear as mud I presume!!?
  16. "an idea I'd heard at a David Lonsdale talk and to the best of my knowledge, it's expert speculation rather than accepted fact. " Giles, well put imo.....It is not something I would get too hung up about essentially as the presence of water in the life sysytems comes second only to O 2 & the presence of water will displace oxygen as has been notes..... It is interesting to postulate vis a vis the function of some fruit bods....I would have to summise that only some species do this to any noticeable extent. Dr Lonsdale explained himself whilst painting an impression of self deprecation; as if to say this has been a theory passed around for sometime and owing its origins in "folklore" for want of a better expression. It has been widely disregarded as of late as poppycock to one degree or another I gather but that he was himself admitting that on reflection...why not? People seem to be phased by the information in books either turning their backs on them in denial or embracing them and their content as gospel.... " I remember talking around this even back when I took the tech cert in '99....." Good point david and I would take the view that the books and information in them is all good as long as you use your noodle and are selective and critical in your application of what you are learning from them, this is a good thing. They are not the gospel and there are no black & white answers....Dont look for them! cheers.

  18. " This opportunity will allow the successful candidate to join a well established consultancy practice utilising all modern decay detection equipment. " Do you mean thermal imaging.....?
  19. Dont they reckon that the two can be a force to be reckoned with....the ganos will alter the conditions of the substrate by working on the cell walls....this allows the ustilina to get its head around the rest of the whats left....

  22. I understood from this, albeit, outdated info..... http://www.rfs.org.uk/thirdlevel.asp?ThirdLevel=86&SecondLevel=5 that the cut off date for apps is april......since there have been some changes to the syllabus...I would like to know what the app date deadline is currently if anyone can tell me please? cheers.
