  1. Fair enough UK...but what strikes me is that there is a need for grant aided schemes because the economy no longer supports a "productive" business model the way it used to and so, fails sometimes to make funds available in the other areas you say it could be spent on. Doesnt mean grant schemes dont have their place...IMO. There is no ownership incentive and with the welfare state being starved of further finance..its welcome back the memories of Thatcher's Britain. If you are still using public transport by the time you are 25 ( according to thatcher ) then you are a failure ..... UNBELIEVABLE ! EDIT: In a effort to return to the thread title..much of the finance that was available to the Conservation schemes I worked over the years came from The Lottery !
  2. Thats a terrible image tony.....sorry!
  3. Ive suspected all along that you was a bright button Mr Sorensen...now I knows!
  4. No..it's fooked. Double dip recession. But keep it under yer hat eh!!
  5. well excuse me for breathing.....
  6. Well.......from the point of view of acting within the legal provisions made re: cuttting back of neighbours tree, you right. For as long as you offer the brash back to the owner. If it could be proven ( and here you are on a public forum waxing lyrical about putting one over on an albeit, and on the face of it, awkward or indifferent land/tree owner ) by effectively subjecting him to the same exposure of risk, either to his property or perhaps his family, by DELIBERATELY making the trees unsafe (perhaps) I would suggest you are playing a very foolish game and there may just be tears before bedtime. Stick to the rules mate. You might learn something and accomplish a result in which the trees are both maintained by the rightful owner and at their expense...good for the trees, good for landowner and good for the neighbours..And how can it be bad for business that you were able to consult and proffer sound and effective advice.
  7. You see, you're confusing me now...First you state the trees need to come down but by the end of the statement you are saying they need working on in terms of pruning....I dont doubt the seriousness of the situation believe me. I do have trouble getting my head around the language and some of the views expressed on this forum however.... Sorry mate, I dont mean to have a go. Im really not trying to tell you how to negotiate with cantankerous landowners either. The legislation is there to provide a framework from within which to work out solutions to "unreasonable" behaviour however. I think this is where I would look to resolve a dispute before resorting to "dirty" tactics if you will!
  8. I was also under the impression that the LG Misc Provisions Act ( 1976 --cheers Paul) . The costs ensued from enforced works can be passed to the owners....Much precedes this scenario undoubtedly. I am wondering under what circumstances this might occur if not under 154 (Highways)--presumably " abatement of nuisance/actionable nuisance?" If the Owners & Occupiers Liability Act states where responsibility lies, it is not hard to see where the confusion originates. It may seem oxymoronic but perhaps there is little scope for an authority to assume this tact without also assuming the liability....? ps..this ten minute rule gets me every time....
  9. "I tol the costumers just to cut the trees back to there boudary..whcih will leave the trees with massive lean towards there neighbours house..and see if they will start worrying about them falling over after that. lol ....." Yeah yeah...but is it tree care?
  10. "When you look at it critically, none of these methodologies are that expensive compared to the cost replacing a mature tree. " You surely cannot be suggesting that the costs on either side of that equation are borne , and so shared by, the same party?....... Perhaps an untimely query given the scientific bent to the discussion so far. Caveats and proprietal issues, either intellectual or otherwise, are of interest to those who may hold some interest in employing the technology in the very least. Perhaps the rest of us also?
  11. "What Plant Where. " by Roy Lancaster...site specific.
  12. If it's in a woodland the obvious thought is as to whether there is any significant target to speak of....If not, its not in need of intervention management is it? Sorry folks but all this doom and gloom about bad news OMG and stuff....Just trying to set a balanced view. Il get back under me rock again now!
  13. Mmm...Apple mosaic virus tends to blotch rather than interveinal as you have described....pics would help us maybe? Tim
  14. Probably higher than that but more specifically, papers in this way ask short style questions with typically right or wrong answers..etc etc. Not an essay, discussion, balanced appraisl or otherwise longer duration sitting. Written papers are 2hrs or more..I dont know. Multiple choice I suppose are maybe an hour. They are what they are ( he said profoundly ) I dont seee a problem with that.
  15. "I'm literally just into reading Marcus' two (Arb Journal) papers, which he kindly sent through this morn....." I requested but have not been so blessed! I would like to get a read of them. Tim
  16. Well spotted..here it is. " General duty of planning authorities as respects trees 197 Planning permission to include appropriate provision for preservation and planting of trees It shall be the duty of the local planning authority— (a) to ensure, whenever it is appropriate, that in granting planning permission for any development adequate provision is made, by the imposition of conditions, for the preservation or planting of trees; and (b) to make such orders under section 198 as appear to the authority to be necessary in connection with the grant of such permission, whether for giving effect to such conditions or otherwise. "
  17. Looks as though the damage has already been done.... The planner is culpable? I would suggest a blatant disregard for procedure.....Depressing eh!
  18. I dont know whether it's worth making the point that the parameters of risk , "set" by the HSE for want of another tag, are not rules/law whatever...If you learnt of the level set in the workplace ( and I dont include arborists as Im fairly certain we fall into a category with significantly higher exposure to risk even than most other workplaces..) you might be surprised. I will not even try and stab at it but urge you to look it up if you are interested mate.... I digress. The point I wanted to make I think, was the exposure to risk currently estimated by the HSE from trees to the general public is both low (which is right imo) but also includes the scenario you outline Arbculture. For as many times as that occurs. This is because as an industry we are actively " managing" tree risk. To what extent that is the case with respect to the efficacy of such management remains an awkward issue..
  19. On the contrary, these are great photos. There are a few Arbtalkers who seem to know their way around a camera and post quality images. They make for fine threads.
  20. I was talking with a guy on the Hansatech stand at Barcham's . Not much help directly Tony Im afraid . He is based in Fakenham ...try look him up. I stated that a handheld device that was within a budget and such would make a very useful tool for tree care mangers to which he said that a market for this was only just really dawning on them! Surprising somehow. I think they are looking to write software that can correlate data sets and produce legible results if you're looking for a job Marcus...lol http//:Oxygen Electrode and Chlorophyll Fluorescence Measurement Systems [email protected]
  21. It depends entirely on the vehicle and this is so because of design of the caliper/slider arrangement and the materials used to make the parts etc...Not rocket science but simply that mostly the sliders are fit with boots of some description. The wrong grease will destroy these "gaiters" and they are worse than useless going soft, holding moisture, bagging around and retaining large quantities of s**t, none of which helps the smooth working life of a slider..... Some may think this a bit pedantic but we use a range of grease for different applications. Often you will find lithium/soap based greases recommended for this application. This why a service kit is worth hunting down. Replace the gaiter, refresh the grease. Job done. Same reason the withdrawal of these items from retail stinks though eh?!
  22. "It works well with a stock question bank to ensure international consistency. I sat a PDArb exam not so long ago which had a scenario question based on an entirely different piece of the syllabus - examiners error." So there's no examiners error? "This consistency is also applied to the marking - its either answer B or it isn't. There's no borderline answers that different examiners score differently" There's no examiners error..... "Costs are kept down because the questions can be marked by computer.' There's no examiner's error...! Sorry but I dont agree with any of the above Tony. Theres a very good reason papers are not set in this style beyond a certain scope and timeframe scenario in other level exams I am sure. It not only limits the scope to which you can enquire of students but it also limits the scope within which people are different and able to bring challenging and novel answers to the same questions. I applaud the goal of consistency, and that of enquiring of a syllabus that has been delivered with certainty and purpose....but to limit is to lose and multiple choice has certainly some very obvious limits. I suppose we disagree..... And yes, I do think its easier!
  23. No argument from me.....Those of us without command of english as you say may well have qualifications of a different kind ( Craft level skills etc. ) Quite the opposite from discriminating against a whole sector of potential employees and Tree Care Professionals, these individuals should certainly be allowed to both gain credit for their knowledge and experience aswell have access to industry training and up to date education. All of which this scheme, IMO, provides to a degree. It is an excellent scheme that , damn it, appeals alot more than the rather "elitist" and discriminatory hierachal and tiered option the AA so far proffers.... None the less, what value is there in crediting a level beyond its "innate" potential Those of us who struggle to read and write are not likely to seek work in a job that requires an immediate grasp of the principles of reading and writing. It is precisely because of this that the value and importance of qualifications that recognises this group arises. Just one last point however...and it is that I hastily add that I am in no way making the assertion that the ISA is intended for such individuals. It is however, in my opinion and because of the obvious comparisons with the industry body in the uk ( AA ) not a program that can be easily or readily scored at a level with others in the uk. God knows the ABC is throwing it's toys out the pram trying to redefine Tech Cert, Prof Dip and others which I hope makes my point. The AA also moving quals according to incoherent criteria as far as I am concerned......Not theirs I know but this makes no difference in the real world Im afraid! Multiple choice is a result of the difficulties of making the program accessible to a wider audience and increasing it's appeal. It is also the achilles heel.
  24. I have not done it. I did not feel that after two NCH qualifications that it was right for me. I would definitely agree with the CPD's being a singular strength of the scheme and for this reason find myself reconsidering this decision from time to time. Not least because of the total stall beset potential students in other areas frankly. However, and again, regardless of level, the NCH is regarded as a level 2 qualification. It was a 9-5, 5 days a week qual when I did it ( 1 yr) and the ISA just did not seem hard enough. I am surprised to hear so many say it is hard and that it should be above this or that...but hey. Fair punt guys, I have not done it. I think you should at least be able to read and write to pass it however!! Im gonna show how out of touch I am but isnt it multiple choice?
