  1. That would be mostly no then. 6 inch chipper is the same price as a good 2 tonne mini digger and they shed parts for fun, yet generally only £60.00 per day! Why are we so precious about chippers? I do throw a fit when people put saws on the cowling
  2. Do other people hire chippers to local arborists, especially those you may know well. If so do you charge the same as a hire company or do you just cover costs of parts etc? Only really talking about people you can trust to not put iron rods through the infeed! I suppose what I am saying is there such a thing as mates rates for such an expensive bit of kit?
  3. We have ladders. mostly in the yard. sometimes they come to work but usually then stay on the tipper, taking up space. Every now and again they save us loads of time, esp when the throw line gets stuck again. Never say never!
  4. I am lazy with paperwork and too trusting. I have worked in Lancs, Yorkshire and Cumbria and 99% of people are trustworthy after a handshake. Extra work included. There is always the 1% who want something for nothing and if you are trustworthy they may mistake your honesty for stupidity. Up to you to trust people and take the odd hit or drown yourself in paperwork. Bigger jobs are always worth the extra effort
  5. Ah just worked it out.
  6. Thanks for the sympathy. I heard Hiax boots have a steel insert but I am sure that steel inserts would be bad news when climbing, giving nil flexability. How do you put a wrench through your foot Arborist?
  7. Does anybody know brands of chainsaw boots which offer sole protection from sharp pointy stuff? Thought I would ask after a few days of foot rest and healing. Thanks
  8. It must be worse over there but we are going as normal so far, just takes longer to get everywhere. Just dismantled trees over a stream and the lads were picking icy brash from the water for three days. Sometimes cannot get on to drives but longer drags are made easier on snowy ground. Pint half full and all that
  9. I got a ally plank job done on mine with all removable bits- full height for 2k at Britt tip. No tool box tho.
  10. conkers

    Tarp top

Brittip, Warrington did a smart job of mine. £280.0 then. Fully removable
  11. Hello Skyhuck,

Are you still ok for Wednesday?

  12. Do all chainsaw trousers make your boxers ride up to your chest or is it just a stihl thing. Don't seem to remember sip's doing that
  13. We get alot of calls from YP but it is only a start of a new work base. From one call, it leads to others. I have found that a big add puts alot of people off, because they assume you are expensive or they want a small personable company.
  14. Sounds like a North West England type problem as hours of sunshine and warm winds are in short supply. Gonna build a shelter when I get a moment. Cheers
  15. Like so many others in the area, I am now out of sellable logs! Used to have no problem stacking the wood in the open in a large pile. Split them and then sell on after one year. This year the whole pile is as wet as when it was cut. Tarps don't work as the wood cannot breathe. We cannot leave sides open because the rain frequently comes down at all angles. So need to invest in a barn or give it up. Anyone else had this delemma?
  16. I still use two prussiks and both ends of rope but will consider any new kit for any specific job. What ever is easier and safer. I don't agree that adding lots of bits of metal to your climbing system helps for everybody.
  17. Roadside work........When you make sure the pavement is clear and you stop work for pedestrians, only to watch from the tree as they walk into the busy road with there eyes fixed on the pavement!! and drivers that will not stop for stop/go boards:mad1:
  18. Have a look on You tube or here for Reg Coates. You can learn alot from there but I would have somebody on site who is experienced. I have never done a crane job and would not do my first without help
  19. If Clarkson is right then lets be positive, call it economic revolution and find a better way. 25 years ago we were all going to die in a burning mushroom cloud and people were building bunkers in Iceland. Dooom. O yes 2012-the end of the world. Any way as long as they are selling newspapers! It is a media frenzy and if the economy is built on confidence then the media is making sure we area all knackered, but they will be the last to go as you can read about your own demise every day for less than one pound!
  20. We all have trees in common and any other personal feelings about how we do the job is personal. Got to do the work by your own standards and not be told what to think. Some walk away some don't. Not judging.
  21. Surely there has to be some middle ground on this topic. If you are an Arborist you are in it for different reasons but what is wrong with walking away from a job after trying to inform the customer about tree care? Is the job all about killing trees Skyhuck? I thought it was about judgement and keeping trees where possible by pruning as a last resort so we can exist with trees and not bannish them from our streets. I am not supporting 'grassing customers up ' but there are exceptions when some idiot buys a house with 700 yr old tree and cuts it down because he wants a trampoline. Just because thereis not alot of work around in some areas is not reason enough to cut anything down. Where will that get us?
  22. A couple of times I have been told to take more and more off a tree with horrible results, against my judgement. I will not do it anymore in the same way you would not ask any trades person to do a shoddy job. Well done for posting the Euc though, I think most arbs have done it from time to time especially when there are stem weaknesses. Eucs usually fall over eventually anyway!
  23. If your daft enough to do 10k of work without stage payments these days you are brave or stupid. Would you give a stranger 10k without a contract or some assurance you are going to get it back? As for recession. Yes we are but as we are learning, it is affecting areas differently and on the high street there is a cull of weak, poorly run shops. The building trade is hit badly because there is problems with credit and a housing slump but anyone could see that coming. I feel very sorry for guys here in badly affected areas
  24. Dumb, sacked imo
  25. I have been to Myerscough and thought the Arb staff there then were really helpfull but since then the place has grown into a horticultural factory so I would think the place has no time for the individual.
