  1. I keep mine- coz I am a bit sad. I should dump most and just keep the old Backerliner. Would never use them and have been told to not store near recent gear. Def should not use them.
  2. I would not consider it for myself but most things for employees come as a requirement.
  3. Then oops! Spoke to AA rep when he was doing lolar check, I did not mention it and neither did he. We covered most thing H & S. They[ empoyees] are also doing work placement training and it has'nt been brought up, ignorance was bliss.
  4. Are you supposed to refresh every cs? If so, that is daft and unfeasably expensive
  5. Is this a requirement yet? I know you can get little monitoring things for users. I end up dragging so much brash- not a problem:001_huh:
  6. HI.The public do not know generally about who is a pro or not. Many people have not even heard of Arboriculture. With programs like rogue traiders the public can be educated. I know whenever I try to convince poeple not to top and lop they start to switch off and are more inclined to use the chap who will do what they- the customer wants. The AA and ISA are our hope of being the face of the industy when Arb does get in the general media. Programs and the media who are often as in the dark as the public need a reference or easy target to call professional, as we saw on rogue traiders. Much of the HSE stuff, like recording accidents, risk assesments is manditory anyway. Many of us choose not to do it at our own expense.
  7. Our commercial work is ok, but private work is sliding. Since VAT went to 20%. No way around it. It looks like the only way to be busy and successful is to do as much cash as you can, put it in your back pocket. Do not pay insurance or staff properly and live off the state where you can! This must be why I am struggling to make things work. The goverment do not take micro companies seriously so they will not help make a level playing field. The VAT threshold and increase is testiment to that.
  8. Maybe, but def not rigging from the tree. Explain to the customer about damage limitation. Not worth a life! Speak to your insurance company about possible damage. I had to do this once with a heaving Pine over a road closure and they were very helpful. It will put you in the picture when quoting. Good luck
  9. .............
  10. I worked for Nigel Benn the boxer. He lived in Beckenham in Kent then a long time ago. He was rude and aggressive. No suprise. Awsome fighter in the ring tho. I heard he has changed and found religion.
  11. I caught a bloke filling his trailer with my split logs. Old-ish guy. Years ago. He had a fair bit, about a cube. When I saw him I was fuming, but then when I approached him I did not have the heart to do any thing but tell him to sod off! Things are different when you are face to face:confused1: Dean I would try to ask them to pay for it and tell them you have evidence of their crime and will be taking it further. Wish I did then! Keep it vague, let their imaginations do the work.
  12. It is important to hold up prices for the industry. All pro industries have a fair idea of what is enough to run a good company. Our industry is full of people pricing lower than they can afford. I have done it loads of times by mistake but maybe in the back of my head I have a good idea of what others are charging. Why should a customer who knows nothing about Arb choose a higher quote? Would any of us do the same for a new car or a loaf of bread? It is all about building a client base so you can rely on some work coming in all the time. It's a tightrope we are walking. Don't always be intimidated by peers saying they are earning a trillion pounds a day every day. If they are then good luck to them, but people generally do not hand out wads of cash to someone just because they see them working across the road.
  13. That I did not know. I always assumed it would help with getting on tender lists
  14. I think it used to be less accessible, but have been told that the criterea for being accepted relates to health and safety so is a requirement for the industry anyway. I realise that aa approved means nothing to the average garden owner. Have you considered it Skyhuck? Commercial contracts better than domestic??? Wait longer for money and no tea! Downer but the domestic market is maybe going to shrink this year so any work is good work
  15. Just wondering what people thought about becoming an approved contractor. We do not have any in our area and I was wondering why? Is this the same in most rural areas? Some other posts on similar topics have turned into Arb assosiation bashing. Looking for constructive feedback Cheers
  16. MEWP vs climbing. That old Chestnut! What was I thinking. Good on him for doing it. Balls of steel. If you cannot a big enough mewp to site. Mike. I must remember to hire a vid cam next time I am out. I can assure you though you will not see anything dodgy or cowboyish. You will not see anything exciting ether. Just a bloke climbing a tree for a living. Full respect for all the guys taking the time doing new things or interesting jobs and putting them up for all to see. Everyone to their own:thumbup:
  17. Mewp??? Just a question, not being critical. I was not aware it was important to put a video of your work up. I like watching them but I'll not be buying a cam-corder and having somebody stand around for hours watching me carry out tree work. I don't know how to edit them anyway. I thought this was a discussion forum not a cinema club. Each to there own. We have all carried out work on dodgy trees where you have too. If you don't have to, then choose a safer method like in most pro industries. No brainer!
  18. Looks like plenty of room for a MEWP to me, away from the direction of fall should it fail.
  19. Cheers for the recommendation fellas:biggrin: Will send some photo's if I can work out how to put them on here! Mark, Saftey is my main concern but the reality is, the limbs are so long dead and heavy, work position would be imposible unless we decided on damage limitation- cover the building in ply sheets and cut sections as small as possible. Main stem no problem though.
  20. Hello,

Skyhuck tells me you have a MEWP. Just wondering if you hire man and machine.

Quite a long way- South Lakes for one day.

    Cheers

  21. Please see post in employment. Thanks
  22. Hi, Looking for the hire of a MEWP for work on a Sycamore in south Lakes area for one day. We need a tracked machine with a working height over 17metres. Very dodgy large co-dominant stem to remove over stone outhouse, no chance of lowering from tree hence need of MEWP. willing to send photo's of work. Def only one day. If interested, pm me and quote your day rate including mewp. Am willing to provide any id to proove honest and reliable. Catch is-- work needs to be done this week as the tree is so poor. Safe from a MEWP though. Only looked at it yesterday. Thanks:thumbup:
  23. :thumbup:There is no way in this industry to earn much more than everybody else unless you can provide total quality and persuade your customers to pay more for your services. Unless you have no friends and family and are willing to work 24/7, you will find it hard. More to the point- would you want to? The problem in Arb and Horticulture is that you will always compete against the guys who are working at a loss! We have been told to put our prices up by our accountant just to keep a living wage, been trading for 11 years. We have some customers who always come back regardless of charges but new work is hard to find, because we always compete against guys who are cheaper but will be around for three years untill their lenders call time on their capital purchases. Good luck, quality is everything.
  24. Hello, Ulverston, South Lakes... for the last 11 years anyway. You from this neck of the woods?

  25. Was having a chat to local paramedic friend and she informed me that should you get celox in your eyes it can lead to blindness as it takes the water from the eye. She did not go into any more detail but you get the idea! Most accidents requiring celox are going to involve panic and much haste. I got the impression that the effects are fairly quick so not only possible blindness but making self rescue impossible. She did say the product is on the market somewhere already in a bandage and so not likely to be blown by the wind, as is possible with the little packs. Am taking mine out of my hat tomorrow as ruptured packet could be pretty nasty. This may be old news or may be very unlikely, as I have never opened a packet and do not know if it can easily be blown into the face, but worth mentioning I think.
