  1. If you guys are going to tescos in your skanky old work trucks I think you should start working a bit harder so you can afford a car aswell!
  2. Was working over a river a couple of weeks ago when my Husky 350 went in for a swim. It was completely submerged in really fast flowing water for about 10 minutes whilst we figured out how to get it back. Eventually we convinced (or was it pushed?) my new groundy to get his ass in there to secure his future work prospects. When we got the saw back we put it on the river bank for 10 minutes to dry out and then it fired up first time. Very impressed.
  3. I only employ people who know what they're doing. In Cornwall wages aren't the best so could probably earn more in other parts of the country. Remember, all you employees out there, you cost your boss a darn site more than what you take home each week/month.
  4. On PAYE, £60 for ground work, £80 for climbing.
  5. I have an "overhanging a river" tax - in fact any where near water!
  6. I am chilled - and without the use of any illegal substances. Just think it's unbelievable that anyone could think it's acceptable to be climbing trees with a chainsaw whilst under the influence of drugs! It put's everyone in the gang at risk. Not to mention the fact that most of my customers would never have me back again! Not exactly the company image I'm looking for.
  7. Meet at my yard at 9 then work till the job's done - usually 5ish. Don't know how some of you on here manage to get up so early - I would feel like sh*t getting up at 6! P.S. Always make time for breaks:151:
  8. Cabstars are the best 3.5t tipper you can buy - no contest. This is purely down to their build quality and reliability. Transits and LDVs are just big old bone shakers in comparison - my tractor is more refined! Spare parts might be cheap, but they need to be - because your going to be buying a lot of them if you invest in a tranny or ldv!
  9. I think a lot of tree surgeons who are in business will just go into other types of business. Either that or just employ some younger staff.
  10. Tough talk for an old man. I have been boxing since the age of 14 and ultimate fighting at national level for 6 years so I do have some experience at smacking people in the mouth masterblaster.
  11. You only pay tax in relation to your profits so your calculations must be way out - you should definitely get an accountant! If you have money in a savings account why do you want to pay your tax in installments? Also, there is no such thing as being in a high tax band for your income - you pay a higher rate of tax for everything you earn over £30k, but this is the same for everyone.
  12. Most of the guys I know have just done their CS30/31 & CS38/39 and then got a job with a tree surgeon.
  13. Yeah, well you got to get some trees to work on first! Image does matter - I for one wouldn't want someone who looks like a tramp working on my property when I wasn't there.
  14. For christs sake don't hide your new cam in the log pile if they're nicking your logs!
  15. If a customer doesn't trust you or you don't trust them then a written quote is a good idea. But don't just automatically do a written quote straight away - give them your quote verbally and say that if they accept then you can give them the quote in writing before the work commences, this way you're not writing out a quote for a job you might not even get.

    blowers

I don't know how vibration levels are recorded - or even if they are. I would imagine all new machines have to meet a certain standard though. I own 4 of the Makita blowers and all I can say is that you don't notice them vibrating to a point that they are going to affect your hands.
  17. The best way to come across as being professional is to really know what you're talking about. Know your trees, listen to what the customer wants doing and make some informed and intelligent suggestions. Having a company logo which is printed on all of your stationery, t-shirts, vehicles, etc... really looks good. Also, it helps if you can afford some decent equipment/vehicles, don't opt for battered old secondhand chainsaws and rusting trucks - it makes you look like your business is not very successful and customers will wonder why this is.
  18. Don't agree with the use of illegal drugs full stop. If any of my staff turned up to work for me puffing a joint they'd get a smack in the mouth and their P45.

    blowers

The handheld Makita blowers are light and powerful and extremely reliable - all for £200!
  20. If they're charging you by the ton then I think that's fairly safe to assume.
  21. Round here most council employees are already unskilled idiots!
  22. Surely it depends how much your charging?
  23. What is an arse twitcher any way?
