  1. Well.....now you mention it?? Just an analogy. (food on table) You've got to have more interest in your job than just the money. I really enjoy what I do and get great satisfaction from doing a job where you can stand back and think, F'ck me that looks good. What a sad life that someone goes out to work and will massacre a tree, have no feelings about his work and go home thinking nothing about it. Look at Mattyf's Ash Crown reduction, He had every reason to be proud of that job and to me that's what it's all about, nto thinking your better than everyone else, like is being insinuated. It just about enjoying the work you do and being proud of the job you do. I would go back to selling tools if it came to a point where I had to do work I wasn't proud of. Skyhuck: A felled tree can always be replaced with a smaller species of tree if the reason for felling it was because it was in a position where it's size was a problem. Id rather see a load of Acers than a load of Ugly topped trees I think Pete summed it up nice in his post: if you do that kind of work out of preference, as opposed to neccesity, with the knowledge of an arborist then you have a status much lower than a gypo!
  2. Thats your choice Pete, I personally couldn't do it. my line of thinking is: Severely topping a tree is bad for the tree from whichever way you look at it. Topped trees then should always be kept up to, new growth kept down so the weak growth points don't get more weight than they can support. New growth from topping cuts can hide weakness in the joint. New growth, if not kept in check will peel away when new growth gets to a weight the joint cant support on certain species and could kill someone walking by or playing in the garden. A tree surgeon may come along in the future and use said branch as an anchor point with hidden weaknesses and that branch may fail. It's not just about getting food on the table
  3. You do your job to your standards and I'll do mine to mine It's nothing to do with self importance or importance of job. I like to think of it more as having slightly higher standards and carrying out the job to the level expected of a Qualified Tree Surgeon. The thread started with me being asked to butcher three perfectly healthy trees with TPos, just because the new householder didn't like them swaying in the wind. I think people have swayed off topic slightly, nothing to do with self importance:wave:
  4. No problem with it Pete, but not in a domestic garden. Contract, underpowerlines and railways yes, there's a reason for it. But not for no other reason than for money and just to make it clear to everyone, by that I mean "me", "I" wouldn't.
  5. Never mentioned removing a tree, i said if they asked me to butcher a tree and that's what the thread was about, not general work Whats the reference to disaapearing up my arse for
  6. I think it was summed up by someone earlier, the only advise people can give is the correct way of doing it, so many people have been killed. If you were killed after taking the wrong advice from this forum, the forum users would have to live with that. The only advise is not to try and do it and to wait do a short course on how to do it right or get someone trained to show you.
  7. I had no tickets to start with, I have gone out and got them because I can't get anywhere without. Not because people tell me to do so, not because I think its snobbish. But just to cover my arse in the event something goes wrong and someone sues. Last year I had three people try to sue us. All at the same time. 1. Cherry picker Passenger 2. Woman said her babys face was scatched passing where we were working and said we didn't have correct signage at correct distances or footpath closed sign, she obviously wasn't new to claiming. 3. Passenger in my landrover sued me for whiplash when someone else hit me up the rear! Claim culture forces change, like it or not, if your not covered, beware.
  8. Why do people always take things the wrong way? I am not assuming "you" are not qualified at all! When i write a sentence such as: "You have purchased insurance, but if you haven't got tickets and something happens, without them you will have trouble claiming." The "you" doesn't mean you personally it means you as in everyone who purchases insurance. I'm generalising. Stop taking things so personally man. Chill out
  9. I think they have got character, Certainly need the repollarding to take the weight off, I think they'll look great when they're done.
  10. Talking total turd? You have purchased insurance, but if you haven't got tickets and something happens, without them you will have trouble claiming. i wrote off a cherry picker, the cherry picker was owned and insured by me. They asked me what I did, told them tree surgery. The bloke in the basket with me at the time was badly injured and sued me for compensation. I phoned my public liability insurance, they asked me what I was doing, I told them I was helping someone out who could reach his gable end to point it. They then said, because I wasn't doing tree surgery then I wasn't covered, they also asked if I had my ticket. If I'm talking turd go ahead and ring your insurance, ask them if you are still covered with no qualifications. When you ring a company up and ask for Tree Surgeons insurance, they presume a Tree Surgeon will be qualified.
  11. They won't tell you before, otherwise they wouldn't get your money. They take your money and tell you later. That's what they did with me, it's up to you to read the small print.
  12. So in effect, you have paid for insurance cover but you aren't covered, waste of money really. Plus it could be a waste of money for whoevers property is damaged
  13. I'm not sure whether insurance require tickets now though, I bet they'd ask for them if it came to a claim.
  14. It's been hung up for two days, the woman said the right hand poplar has moved aswell, it is leaning more than it was. Thats my anchor tree! I've looked at the base and theres no obvious signs of movement. You'll probably recognise the road, its the one at the back of my house toward the main road. Going to shut one side of the road in rush hour, bollocks to them, they only use it as a rat run anyway. I'm just going to come down ontop of it and not anchor to it, drop all the weight off straight into the field and then I will put in a lowering rope to take its weight and section it down. Did the first one with Liam, I owe him half a day.
  15. did the first photo this afternoon. A before and after. Next photos are to do in the morning. Better dust my road signs off. You can just see split above landy chipbox ...and no cherry picker. Nice trees to anchor into at the side.
  16. Mind numbing!! Which are the narrower ones then, the crappy one with the sprinter engine that doesn't have 3 point?
  17. Suprised you get any work done JP, running a burger stall
  18. Just been reading up on the specs, the 1650 is 15" wider than the landy, wouldn't have a hope of getting it down some of the driveways the landys been down. Do you do domestic or mainly commercail, how do you find them for domestic work. You know what its like 10ft nearer the job can save a lot of time
  19. Good example of conciencous work. (if that's how its spelt) well done Matty. I'd be chuffed to bits with that. Wouldn't it just piss you off if the customer came back and asked why you haven't done it yet
  20. Most of the insurance jobs I do, the insurance will only pay for damage the tree has done, they won't pay for the tree to be cleared.
  21. Leaving stubs makes it easier to climb next time Bob
  22. He was just contributing to the "bad Pruning " thread but misplaced his post
