  1. I've got both vents fully closed. I think that the defra approved model (which I have) doesn't allow you to close as much as the non approved one. I wonder if you lose a little bit of efficiency control due to this. This fire goes up like a rocket when I put a match to it, due to the flexible flue liner and the vermiculite insulation in the chimney cavity.
  2. This might be a bit of a dumb question but I'm new to wood burning: do logs burn faster when there is wind whipping around your chimney flue?
  3. its defo made a difference and taken a chill out of the air. Will build up burn gradually this week as advised. Looking forward to sitting in my grunts when in here when its snowing outside!
  4. Can anyone reassure me? I've just had a clearview vision 500 (8kw) installed and I'm really pleased with the job they've done. I've lit it for the first time tonight and following advice from the installer not gone for a big burn in order to ease it in. As yet there doesn't seem to be a lot of heat kicking out at all and its been going a few hours tonight. Does it get better the more its used? I've had the flue lined and insulated with vermiculite so it draws incredibly quick. The fire is surrounded by fire boards and set on a granite hearth. I'm really impressed with how long each log burns for. I'm hoping that it will heat the ground floor of my terraced house which is open-plan but not big
  5. Sounds like a bad idea then! I looked at the TW18 at the APF and they are way too bulky looking
  6. PETROL CHIPPER SHREDDER 3" 75MM NEW on eBay (end time 05-Nov-10 19:59:42 GMT) These are produced locally and I'm wondering if there are any willing reviewers on here.
  7. Not being able to try new gear and techniques due to cost. Not having the chance to learn from others (on the job)
  8. Mine is coming soon and I'm pretty excited. I've just got one little question about the flat top model of the vision 500; if the flue comes out from the top can you still use the hotplate for kettle and such?
  9. Anyone any experience with Broseley stoves? I've been told they are cast iron and don't have any firebricks to replace,.
  10. contact some companies and they might assist with a visa application if they like the sound of you
  11. Going down to the APF this year and I'm wondering if it is possible to try some different spikes to see which ones are most comfortable for me. I know there's a lot of gear sales tents but is there anywhere we can try stuff and staff to give advice while we do so?
  12. Yeah what happened to the STS bash?
  13. you might see little lancstree there. The 4th of september sounds ok
  14. This sounds like a lot to ask but we are after a lightweight, hi vis waterproof jacket that is breathable enough to wear over a polo shirt in the summer. I know the stein evolution is out there but the reflective strips don't look substantial enough to use on a highway or am I wrong? Cheap would be a good thing too!
  15. I reckon as afag says it is 'not essential' for climbers then it is merely a case of personal preferrence
  16. Wonder what the highways agency would have to say about it? Does anyone know what there stance is (if any!)?
  17. Thats why we bought the T shirts - non snag. However I have to either cover it up or take it off for climbing!
  18. Would you consider wearing a hi-vis in the tree a hazard due to it being a distraction to motorists. The reason I'm asking is because I've been told that I have to wear them on the ground on roadside work but not allowed to wear them in the tree for the above reason. Personally I don't think it is a problem being seen in the tree and it is a pain changing in and out of hi-vis all the time. I'd rather wear it all the time for road side work, which is easy when you have a hi-vis T shirt.
  19. Has this been addressed before? Anyway I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are on wearing a hi-vis while climbing. Does anyone think that it would be a distraction to motorists or are you all for being visible at all times?
  20. Qualifications don't make you good at the job, there is no question of that. Qualifications don't do anything other than 'prove' you have done something. It's that 'something' that is the important part. The system and process behind the learning that leads towards the qualification, along with what you retain, is the valuable thing. If you just go through the motions towards gaining a qualification then you will not benefit nearly as much as a person who thrives from learning about a subject they are really absorbed in. This would reflect well in talking to customers and conferring with colleagues. I believe that qualifications are important only if they have been enjoyed and this does not necessarily take away practical skill and ability as knowledge can go hand in hand with this
  21. Thanks for the advice. I reckon saw it down to the sprouting stuff and see what happens. When I squeezed the stem it did seem a little soft.
  22. Will tell him that Peter. I've just done a little bit of forum research and some say that it may grow another head if you cut it lower. I think it was a green leaved one and I'm aware that the red leaved ones are less hardy.
  23. My neighbor has asked me for advice on his palm(cordeline?) which seems to have pretty much died since the winter. There is a little bit of life in the apex and it is beginning to sprout all around the base. Any advice I can give him on the matter? Should we wait a bit longer and see what happens or cut it down to the base where the fresh growth is?
  24. My brother has been asked to build and install a tree house and wants to know what is the best design/technque that allows for the tree growth or causes minimum damage to the tree. I suppose changing the tree house every year would do it but that would be inpracticle. Any ideas?
