I saw some homemade rocket stoves at a place on saturday and thought what a good idea for a camping stove. Can you buy them for this purpose or will I have to make one out of tin cans

My facial hair gets a bit itchy and sometimes get snagged in the helmet chin strap. Gonna try a cut throat

Razor blade. Anyone use them instead of a Bic or electric? I had a cut throat shave in Thailand but that was done by an expert. You can pick them up pretty cheap on ebay but I wonder why more people aren't using them. I'd sooner trust myself shaving with one of these

Was it easy to replace and do you need to pop rivets? Getting the chain break band on and off isn't easy the first time

Go on then Bob. I put some dead and brittle sycamore on the fire tonight and it gave a really good heat. That's what I'm burning at the min, good dead stuff that has been seasoning up the tree!

The meter is fairly new so I don't think its that. I don't recall putting any oak in there but I will try splitting some to measure the inside. From memory there is some cherry, whitebeam, lime, beech, sycamore, dead elm, alder and maybe a few more

For a while now my MS260 chain break has been too difficult to engage for my liking. I took the break band off and gave it a good cleaning but that didn't help any. I've had it in to the local specialist for a service and asked them to check out the brake for being over stiff and it came back just the same. The problem seems to be worse when the saw has been cutting for a little while and heated up. Compared to other saws it is much harder to apply the brake and it gets to the point where it hurts the back of my wrist so I'm not using it. Anyone had a similar problem?

Yes they should be ready for next winter. I was just looking at the pallet base and thought that it might be beneficial to put another layer of pallets down to let more air underneath. I think with the weight they might have sunk into the ground a little.

I created this store last spring using pallets for a base, with four posts and chicken wire to contain the logs. The problem is that the logs aren't seasoned and according to the moisture meter are mostly above 30%. Its a big mixture of species so I suppose some will season faster than others but there is plenty of wind. Granted, some will have been placed in there up to last autumn but still.. Any recommendations? I'm thinking of relocating the logs and stacking higher and neater

Any good? Looks like an ideal size for storage and for a first chipper. Whats the main things I should look out for when buying a second hand one?

I've got a mate who is doing a weeks course up near Penrith and its about a two hour drive from here. Would anyone be willing to put him up for a few nights to save all that travel time? They don't want the tree out, but I do agree about it being ugly. I didn't think of re-pollard at the time but that would be a good alternative.

Yeah, they want a big tree in their back garden but don't want shade - the usual conflict of interests. Why not thin out a bit Hama? 2-3m reduction on this seems a lot. There are some pretty poor branch unions and I'm going to raise some bits that are overhanging the neighboring gardens

I've been asked to give this Sycamore some attention and got the usual "how much height do you think needs to come off it?". I explained the negative effects of topping and managed to convince them that it was better to thin. They still wanted some of the crown size managed so I said I would do a sensitive crown reduction, bearing in mind that Sycamore are not great to crown reduce. The tree is a fair size and I know its difficult to tell from one picture but that's all I managed to get. I'm sure they will be happy with the work I intend to do but I am interested in what other people would do or not do with such a tree. It looks to have been topped previously and it is in the rear garden of a small bungalow.

We've recently fetched some big timbers up a river banking with a Tirfor. There are probably easier ways but it did the job and safer than going up and down the banking

If there's enough space I'd chose to cut and chuck into the stream then put some waders on and get in there. I wouldn't feel comfortable rigging on that one unless it was really small bits which you might as well cut and chuck.
