  1. Just been handed a pair of geckos at work today and I think they have the european gaff on them. I was climbing on willow and they tore the bark to bits rather than just sticking in there. Which gaffs do you have/prefer? Would I have been better off with the american short? Is there just one size in the aluminium spikes? I know they are a little bit adjustable but I was told that they come in two sizes.
  2. Been up a large pop today in my new Sequoia harness and its been a bit rough on the legs. Anyone else have this? I'm used to the slightly chunkier leg loop pads on the butterfly so hopefully its just a case of getting used to it. I do like the position of the D rings and gear loops better than the butterfly and the back pad seems pretty comfy so far. It just seems like the BFII was slightly more bearable to hang in - not that I hang around all day!

    Spikes

I was reading a booklet that came with my last spikes and it said to use a flat file and carefully work on the side facing the shank then the two other sides as necessary. I'll take another look at the booklet when I get a chance
  4. Oh right. When I tried them on at APF they were the velcro ones and were really comfy but the boss bought leather ones for durability. Are there any pics anywhere of the setup with leather pads? I was sincerely hoping to move away from pads that twist up allowing the shank to go out of alignment with the leg
  5. Can anyone enlighten me? I've just had some gear ordered by my firm and I wasn't sure if the petzl sequoia comes with an anchor ring or not. My boss has also ordered some aluminum gecko spikes with leather pads(?) and I'm wondering how these compare to the velcro ones in terms of comfort? I wasn't even aware that you could have leather pads on geckos
  6. Can you hiab your post off mine Mr Collins! Only kidding I'm not really bothered!
  7. Thanks Janey. What do you mean by 'slightly distal to the previous points'? The targets are fairly low risk. The wood on the back sounds solid. I think a reduction and possibly some sort of bracing to the eucalyptus if they are still worried.
  8. When I was round at my friends house this weekend he showed me his ornamental plum tree which he is really fond of but unfortunately it seems to be in decline. He asked me what measures could be taken to preserve the life and safety of the tree. Looking at the stem there was some extensive decay and some fungal brackets. The decay was dry and very crumbly and reached up into the crown. The tree had obviously been worked on in the past as the crown consists of uniform size regrowth. Between the back of the tree and the fence there was some garden waste piled up to about a foot higher than ground level and I explained how that did the tree no favours. The tree is situated in the back corner of the garden which is pretty high over the gardens below. Can anyone help shine some light on the fungal brackets and decay? Any comments appreciated.
  9. Ended up doing a raise and thin and the client was happy. Even the neighbour that wanted the tree down liked the look of it. I went back up after taking this picture and did one more thinning cut and cleaned a couple of stubs that the owner had left up there. It was a bit more overcast hence the darker photo.
  10. I would prefer to give it a good crown lift and clean. I'll try to convince them when I go to do it
  11. sorry to clarify it goes over a few gardens, not over a building
  12. hang on I sent it before attaching the pic,
  13. Been asked to remove this limb on a willow. I know willow is vigorous but do you think this is too much? The tree is in the top corner of a steep garden and goes right out over the next door neighbours house. I think its a grand tree as it is, but wouldn't look too bad with it off.
  14. Drew. Does the ring not press against the gate of the crab when loaded?
  15. I've been reading about hawthorn and you can make a tincture using the leaves, flowers or berries. This is supposed to help people who suffer from cold hands and feet. Not tried it yet though

    Norway

Can any of you out there in Norway give me a bit of advice? Its my parents 40th anniversary this year and they've been looking at a coach trip to Norway which is hassle free but costs about £1000 per person. I'm wondering if they just got the ferry over to Bergen or a flight, could they do a more interesting trip that doesn't just go to tourist traps. When I went I hired a car and drove round for a week but they don't want to do that. It will be in september/october time. Maybe the coach trip is good value; day 1/2 sail to Esbjerg and travel to Arhus. Day 3 travel through North Jutland to Hirtshals then Kristiansand and sandnes. Day 4 coach and ferry to Voss to stay for three nights. Day 7 travel south to Hardangerfjord, across teh Haukelifjell pass to Kristiansands. Day 8 ferry to Denmark, proceeding to Esbjerg for overnight ferry back to Harwich. i think this covers food, travel and accomodation. Any comments appreciated
  18. I was wrong. The head thing is the most annoying thing in the world. Its the way she keeps doing it throughout the ad.. I'm off to put my head through the window
  19. The whistle on the homebase advert - makes me dive for the remote like its a grenade
  20. I hang my saw in the same way. When putting the crab on the side do you thread it through just the leather or round the webbing also? I'll show what I mean in a pic
  21. Just curious to know how other people have set up their treemotion harness. I've only climbed in mine twice and still have a lot of playing around and adjusting to do, but so far so good. I like to hang my MS200 from the left side so have temporarily put a carabiner through the leather to snap onto. Got my silky on a little elastic loop that is supplied. Pic to follow
  22. The timberwolf I was looking at on ebay was a scam. That was up in aberdeen
