  1. Would the root stock not be Wild Cherry??
  2. I have 4. A tree can produce hundreds of thousands, but if no trees died a to make room for the new, we would get no new "improved" trees.
  3. I would say this is a "reaction" to conditions. Trees are not conscious.
  4. I think we need to clarify what we mean by "immortality", some may argue that a tree is only as old as the living tissue and is in fact just a clone of its earlier self, how is this any better than its progeny?? My immortality is in the genes I have passed on to my children. Cloning, unlike reproduction does not allow for genetic improvement and I would argue is less beneficial.
  5. Evolution is blind. A limb fails due to decay, light hits a dormant bud, the tree can not "chose" to shed the limb.
  6. If a tree wants immortality, layering is a much easier way to go, just allow a limb to touch the ground, bingo!! new trunk same tree!!!!
  7. Bugger!!!! I thought the thread was called "pruning gaffs" I was going to order some!!!!!!!!!
  8. Because he cut the top off, as it was easier to cut, and bugger me it grew back!!!!!!!!! A fence or wall is a LOT of work.
  9. I think you are reading a little to much into this. Man cut the top of the tree for many reasons. One was because that was were the timber was of the required size and easier to cut. He also wanted regrowth out of reach of browsing animals, this regrowth was allowed to grow to the size required for the job it was going to be used for. The tops were also cut of to provided fodder for animals.
  10. Not sure the large Beech in my lake that failed due to giant polypore would agree.
  11. What the one in bottom left?? Please Whats is its affect on Ash??
  12. How many trees have you aked the council to put TPO's on???
  13. I love the smell of a real tree!! We have had this plastic one for 7 years, we have four children, so my wife has had enough to do without hovering up needles, so I let her have her way and we got the plastic one. The kids are getting bigger and my Mrs has said I can bin the plastic tree after Xmas and we can have a real one next year.
  14. I know of a guy who fell backward and pulled a "Little David" grinder onto his legs, he removed 2" of shin bone from just below his knee. He missed the artery by millimeters and was saved by his saw pants that where ripped off and rapped around the cutter wheel staling the engine. He had to spend 4 months in a wheel chair, while the bone grew back. I had a "Little David" grinder, but I moved the handle to the other end, to make it safer.
  15. We have a plastic tree But my Mrs has said I can bin it in Jan and we can have a real one next year!!!
  16. Seat belts are exposed to UV continually, so why are they safe????
  17. True, but we are being told that a brand new, unused harness, still in the box, is unfit for use after 10 years.
  18. The other day we had a Robbin watching us work, at one point it flew in close to me, Todd (my groundie) said " I thought we were going to have a John Hancock moment then" and he doesn't even come on here!! Your fame is spreading mate!!!!!!!!!! Great shot by the way!!
  19. I hear its already happening, I believe the FC are having problems with people felling and stealing plantation trees.
  20. Can some one please explain to me why cars do not have to have there seat belts replaced every 10 years????????????
  21. People are mocking the comment about date not being a big deal, but it does not say much for the ability's of assessors if they cannot spot the terrible deterioration that happens to textiles over time. If they deteriorate so badly it can surly be seen during the inspection.
