What about all the people being made redundant, what about the fact that I have far less work just now than I'm used too?????????? Why do I and others get no help, but the farmers should??????? I just don't get it?????? Surly we each have to make our own way the best we can???

:confused1:Err..... farmers are self-employed they chose who they sell to, teachers and the others you mention are employed, very different. What next?? do we want the government setting prices for all trades?????????
  3. Really at 21!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I was 21 I was indestructible, no aches or pains, wish I was the same today. In all seriousness if your have problem so young I would find a new career, or you could end up with some really serious health issues.
  4. I think for the majority of us our first big was done as an subbie or employee, so estimating how long it should take and the price to charge was the job of someone with the experience to do it. Most of us did a great many large trees as a hired saw before we ever thought of running our own show, so when the time came we had the experience required.

This is were we already are with the EU and sub's, IMO your idea is just going to add another false force to the market. IMO, all the sub's should be scraped and the market should be left to be sorted out by real market forces.

The thing is fair trade prices are about allowing farmer in poor countries to feed their families. Over here what do we decide is a far wage for the farmer?? 20K? 30K? 40K? 50k 100K? Farmers with 50 cows make far less than those with 1500, how do you regulate who gets to sell their milk at fair deal price?????
  7. I'm pretty sure that although there tractors and agricultural machines are not subject to an MOT, they do need to comply with highway regulations, i.e. mudguards, brake lights, horns, etc. Ag vehicles (including mogs, if registered Ag) cannot exceed 24KG GTW.

When I moved here 22 years ago, my neighbour bottled a lot of his own milk, his wife and daughter both had milk rounds, the milk he did not bottle went to the MMB. (milk marketing board) But people started buying their milk from the supermarkets, so the milk rounds dried up and the farmers had no option but to sell to the MMB, but then that was done away with and now its down to the farmers to try and get a decent price from one of the big buyers. We as consumers are to blame really, we prefer the convenience of a super market, but once all the small shops are gone we may well wish we had supported them.

I knew a guy who ran a corner shop, he bought all his bread and milk form the supermarket, as it was cheaper than his wholesaler.

Morrison's upped it by 2p at first, but now 6p + help for struggling farmers. But they have given no guarantee as to how long this increase will last for. My neighbour (who is a mixed farmer, milk, beef and sheep) told me that Wiseman's have not dropped his price, they look at all his costs and only if your making sufficient profit did the drop the rate.

Super markets do loose money on some products, they are known as "loss leaders" they are there to get people in, in the hope that they will buy more profitable items while they are there. Ironically milk and bread are the most common ones.
  12. My left hip and knee give me a fair bit of gip, but it far worse when I'm not working than when I am, so if anything it makes me want to keep going.
  13. What is your normal line of work???? Do you not generally do tree work?????? It seems you know how long it will take and surly knowing that tells you how much it will cost you to do it, add to that the profit you wish to make on that amount of time and you have your price
  14. There was some interesting stats on the radio yesterday, they looked back at previous Tours, the guys today are slower, which would suggest that the sport is cleaner.

  18. Nice, is it petrol???
  19. The logs are worth the effort and cost of removing them, so if the client does not want them I take equipment to the job to enable me to remove them, equipment that has cost me a great deal to buy and continues to cost in maintenance. I am not going to take that equipment to a job and the come home without as much timber as possible, as that timber helps to cover the cost of said equipment.
  20. Skyhuck wonders why we are posting in the third person??????????
