    Stihl

bizare, just checked their website... how come stihls mid range saws swap from 3/8lp to .325 then back to 3/8 again? thats just silly, as its small <50cc huskys running .325, then everything else is on 3/8's seems odd to have a few midrange saws running .325 when they could easily pull a 3/8s Chain?

    Stihl

Really? i thought nearly all stihls had 3/8's drive links, other than the big brutes, all my stuff is 3/8s. i would have thought they would both be the same? thought it was only husky/dolmar/etc that used .325 as standard. but i may be wrong,
  3. 110 landy, with a tipper back, seems the only solution if you plan to go off road an go through muddy terrain, can take chip/clippings, take 3 staff if you have the center seat. will tow plant trailer or chipper through rough muddy terrain. dont see that from your description of what you need that much else will fill the requirements. if space is a issue get a 130 twin cab tipper, i have a 130 twin cab, and i have yet to be short of space, but i dont have to move chippings in the back of mine its purely for tools
  4. beer traps for the slugs no doubt? probably why youve got newts! they're all pi$$ed on slugs:proud:
  5. :bawling:what no hot saw section?? was hoping to crack out the 084 with 17" bar:bawling: might just have to try for the bar and chain and cross cut bits then, is much experiance in this kind of event required or can a novice have a go? (novice at event, not changing a bar and chain before i get any smart comments!)
  6. we have quite a few lesser stag beetles on the farm here, normally find them at in the old decaying ash trees, (with the chainsaw!) thing that gets me is if these species are present, something is obviously right for them, changing or stoping the management might have detrimental effects, eg if you stop digging you veggie patch, it grows over, soil insects decrease, no newt food, newts clear off!
  7. that pic is a smooth newt juv female if im not mistaken, the ironic thing is that great crested newts are no more or less rare than the other species, but because they are rare in europe they suddenly have the same legal protection as bats! crazy

    Forum Meets ?

as a relative newbie to the whole aspect of tree work and management, anything that furthers my understanding of the subject get my vote, but then again so does anything with alcohol involved:drunk:!
  9. spot on, thanks for this, its just the kind of info i was after!
  10. i have all the GCN info from froglife and NE, but its mostly geared to a small site or limited work. No one seems to have any info about landscape scale work eg an active woodland. i could appreciate it if they wanted to use harvesters etc, but thats not the case, dont think a team of guys with chainsaws is going to tread on to many hmmm this is going to take more thought than i had hoped it would!
  11. trouble is their right throught the wood, probably in most rides. just wonder if we can get the work consented if we put loads of mitigation in, ie conservation wood piles, create a small pond/scrape it just seems stupid that its this work that has lead to the newts being there, and stopping it will have a detrimental impact, but thats conservation agencies for you (i should know, i work for several:stoned:) the planned work was taking 30m of timber from either side of the two main rides, using chainsaws so its not like their going to be run over with harvesters etc! there is no chance of moving them all out of the area being worked on.

    Whaaat!

dont ask me thats what the translation on husqvarnas russian site lists it as! they do one with orange handles thats different again, but i cant work out quite what its for thats to this one they use to 262xp engine on them though! none of this new fangled equipment that second saw just looks lethal, could have done with that when i was christmas shopping!

the first one is: Powerful, light and very convenient in the application gasoline-powered saw with the high handles. It is intended for the work in the deep of snow and at temperatures to 40 degrees of lower than zero. Arrangement and height of handles contribute to the outlet of exhaust gases to the side from the user. The well protected fuel tank, located between the handles, ensures outstanding balance. The construction of handles makes it possible to turn the block of engine at angle to 90 degrees. 4,6 hp

isnt it a system developed for making repeated low cuts without having to bend down, eg coppice working?
  15. has anyone had issues with forestry work being restricted due to the presence of newts on the site? have recently come across a site (commertial forestry) where there is a good population of great crested newts, but they have been told they cant carry out normal operations such as thinning/chainsaw operations and also cant keeping brambles down by using a tractor flail. i know they are a protected species, and so is the habitat, but is my opinion that its these practises that have lead to the newts being present. i feel that if the operations are stopped, the site will become unsuitable, then everyone has lost as the timber wont have as much value and the site will be under about 4ft of brambles, and the newts will clear off. so has anyone had any experience of this, or dealing with sites with great crested newts, i suspect its not as common as issues with bats. Cheers Charlie
  16. i bough a few extra tickets, as i thought i had some spare cash, found out this morning my 4x4 needs £300 spending on it, so im skint, but im still glad i could help such a worthy cause, i think people need to consider what would happen if they ended up in a situation where they needed to call on these types of charity, who are supported purely by peoples generosity. surely a few more pounds of donations wont bankrupt you! hell thats what the overdrafts for!
  17. old man had his truck locked up in one of the barns last year when they had those high winds they were trying to clear the site, had to wait till 9 the next morning to get it out again! he wasnt impressed,
  18. just wondered if anyone was going to LAMMA in newark? think i may go as i cant do any work on the river bank in this weather! http://www.lammashow.co.uk its not a bad show considering its free to get into, its mostly ag equipment, but still interesting to look around, Charlie
  19. my mates are on about going to this one instead! http://www.glastonbudget.co.uk/www/index_new.pl/home
  20. wheres the kick back zone on that then? 360degrees around it?
  21. i had a golf mk3 limited edition 21st anniversary GTI, friday afternoon job, put me of them for life 12months of ownership and cost me about a grand and a half in work on it that i couldnt do myself! shame as it was a great car to drive (when it was going) but there comes a time when you have to say enoughs enough
  22. I think its looking to creating large areas of wildwood in the future, so forward planning and low intervention, which seems to becoming more and more talked about in conservation circles, and not just woodland over a whole range of habitats. lots of the sessions are discussion and group activities obviously trying to stimulate constructive ideas and see how people view the future of woodland and forestry.
  23. got this via email so thought i would post it. If its of interest to anyone PM me and i can forward the whole email Forest Habitat Networks – Building New Wildlife Friendly Landscapes 10 – 13 March 2008 Snowdonia national park OBJECTIVES: Participants will: * Improve their understanding of landscape ecological principles from a woodland and trees perspective, in particular in respect to: a) Ecological isolation and its impact on wildlife species. b) Movement of species through the landscape: metapopulation dynamics. c) Woodland biodiversity in relation to woodland density, size and structure. d) The role of landscape scale processes such as grazing. e) The importance of non-wooded habitats as part of Landscape networks. * Comprehend the design principles of landscape networks with regard to the following: a) Maintaining existing nature conservation resources such as ancient woodland. b) Woodland distribution, design and management. c) Plantations, riparian areas, other non woodland habitats. d) New wildwoods; large natural reserves. e) Management within woods taking account of the landscape-scale perspective. * Examine examples of forest habitat network developments from upland and lowland Britain. * Explore how incentives and policies can be used to implement these ideas. * Contribute their experiences and share views with others. its 4 fairly full days, cost is £320 for course, accomodation and all food. Course Organisers: Andrew Weir, Senior Lecturer, Plas Tan y Bwlch, in conjunction with Keith Kirby, Woodlands Officer, Natural England and Jim Latham, Woodlands Ecologist Countryside Council for Wales. regards Charlie PS i hope i've posted this in the right place?
  24. dursban , sorts out most aphids (and its approved for forestry and fruit tree use, gives the apples some flavour. whats the wooly aphid on just out of interest
  25. the 372's should be ok with a re-tune, think i would get the 357s looked at by another dealer. I cant believe the EA use dirty two stroke mix, would have thought the health risks alone would have scared them into using aspen.
