    Which Winch?

I have a husky on my defender, its good, its slow but not unbearable but thats a good thing if your using it for assisting felling etc. They have a worm drive so you can leave them tensioned with out them burning out. I have mine on albright solenoids as mentioned and they are easy to wire to a remote control if you want to at a later date.
  2. TPO woodland in a Conservation area and a 50% uplift on it, ouch its going to be hard work getting anything approved on a site that small and even if you do the previous owners are then going to sting you for it! The 50% uplift means if you get planning on it and it increases the value of the plot they are entitled to 50% of the increased value of the property so if you got planning for a 250k house you would have to stand them 50% of the 250k!
  3. I like the facebook log in option thats neat! Good luck with it
  4. Something a bit different if someone up there is after work
  5. This has nothing to do with me but i thought it may interest some people on here
  6. it wont be anything like it due to the advances in technology and the emissions and havs restrictions, although it could be a very nice lightweight saw, it could be a replacement for the 339xp i dont know i havent looked into it enough
  7. nope nope and nope There is an IPL and operators manual on husqvarnas website for a 550xp which would be a replacement for the current 346xp at some time next year (honest!) then there is also a new smaller saw which will be a 543xp supposidly some time end of next year early 2013 anyway it will be interesting to see how the newer saws last. TCD does the 261 run a bit quicker then as I have always felt that series of saw, 024/026/ms260 seemed sluggish on chain speed and acceleration, have they sorted this? as from having run a 560xp it certainly seems husky are stepping it up as well
  8. You could wait till next year when the 346 replacement is out I think these newer saws hold a lot of promise

    560xpg

I have never been a fan of small-mid sized stihls so im probably not the best person to ask on a comparison, but it feels like a proper forestry saw to me just how it handles it just feels right. To me stihls feel fine for logging up but i wouldnt want a stihl in the woods all day they just dont feel quick enough (but this is personal opinion obviously, before i get attacked by stihl owners)

Well what can I say, been doing some windblown trees this afternoon first tankfull through the saw its really really impressive it runs so sweetly and the acceleration is unreal considering its not broken in. Its really smooth in the cut not the aggresive feel you expect with a husky like the 346/254/372, but its got shed loads of power. I like the larger diameter front handle this has over the 346, its easier if wearing gloves. Its on a 15" bar and its great, going to get an 18" for doing some bigger stuff as I dont have any doubts this will handle a bigger bar with ease! (got an 8pin sprocket to fit as well once its a bit more run in although that would render most of my ppe under-rated as the chainspeed could exceed 24mtr/s) Im so pleased i took the risk to get one after the initial problems with the electrics, if it gets better as it runs in I can really see this being one of huskys best saws its not struggled with anything i have thrown at it, including some large rowans. Im looking forward to get a few more tankfuls through it
  11. why not set up something like the horse loggers use for loading trailers, where you set up your trailer with two timbers from the edge to the ground, and then roll the logs up these onto the trailer, but rather than rolling you could just pull them up with the winch if they were bigger logs I will try and find a picture of what I mean, there is a DVD called low impact forestry workshop its filmed in the states with horse loggers but there are some go thought provoking ideas on how to use the site to your advantage, such as if you have and slopes you stack your timber above the ride then pull up with the trailer and roll the logs up some bearers onto the trailer! simples
  12. Andy Collins has a front loader for shifting brash and timber on his atv, somewhere on here there are pics of it here you go: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arb-trucks/7031-atvs-quads-7.html
  13. Never mind what I want what the hell should I get the wife??????? oh I would just like something little like a timber harvester, although I have somewhat probably stupidly told people things like socks would be good. I can see christmas morning now, 10 parcels of socks no doubt
  14. Fantastic work again Steve, Its great all the people and companies that have donated gifts, its a great cause
  15. seriously do you guys all just use glyphosate am I the only one who actually uses picloram and just sprays the foliar area, 100% kill off in one application, is it because you guys want return visits or am I missing the bigger picture
  16. quite like this, I formed this opinion before i saw the video as well! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW1W34A-n4I&ob=av3e]Lloyd - Dedication To My Ex (Miss That) ft. Andre 3000 - YouTube[/ame]
  17. as a real fan of huskies I have to say MS880 is a far better saw
  18. Does anyone know of any good quality woodland/forestry/biodiversity conferences, I just wondered as Im not aware of any in this sector and when I have worked on moorland and river restoration there were loads and I found them great for gaining knowlegde and networking with people doing similar work and forming very beneficial relationships, but I cant say I have ever really seen them to the same standard for woodland managers. I must admit even the ICF ones this year didnt really appeal. Do the FC run any decent ones as they dont seem to get the publicity if they do. Cheers Charlie
  19. We had a really light dusting on the cars at about 3am this morning but it had gone by 7
  20. No idea, Im not from Leek was just up there working, furthest out I usually venture is the Jervis arms at Onecote that way on
  21. yep all the brash etc to be removed, so its going to be windrowed on site to brown off a bit, then crane fed chipper blowing it into a tracked dumper to remove from the site, I will try and get back up there for some more pics as the chipper is a new one in the uk its a farmi with conveyor floor in it so it will feed brash etc in easier
  22. Its not a million miles from there, its just above Thorncliffe, near the view area. Its a moorland/blanket bog SSSI so should be open ground with heather and sphagnum type vegetation not christmas trees, what the photos don't show is some of the slopes, between where i was taking the photo and the harvester working is a deep gully with 50+degree slopes on it, so it was fun bouncing the trees down the side of there
  23. Just outside Leek, in the Staffs moorlands the moorland behind the woodland is inside the Peak District National Park
  24. I was messing about trying to get the town in the background of the photo, the light was just right really, its tidy for a 11yr old machine
  25. No they are going through a chipper as they are not very good condition, mutli tops, very leggy etc etc also it would be a nightmare to try and get them out
