  1. Stretching made mine worse.
  2. I daresay given a simple enough site, a broad understanding of construction principles and others work to copy, an arb could design a house sufficiently well to satisfy a planning application. Does it matter if architects write method statements or if arbs design houses? For many simple planning applications, I doubt it (whether those projects can actually get past building regs or be implemented without harm to trees is another matter altogether...). The problem is how do you know you have a simple site / application if you don't engage the professional? That gamble is up to the applicant - save money now and hope you won't have to spend it later. Fair enough, it's their money - I know of at least two seperate projects last year that just couldn't be built lawfully as per the consent. Both had to submit new applications - win some lose some I guess. Non-arbs do get away with a one-size-fits-all type document that they may trot out anytime there's a tree on site; but one-size-fits-all fits all but one size badly and when things get complicated its all too apparent. But you can extrapolate from those impacts to specify types of construction that will be less damaging - you can work back from what you want to avoid to what will be acceptable. Far better to give constructive guidance before the design team have spent time working on a layout than to just shake your head afterwards (or facepalm when you see the bungalow under the sequioa).
  3. As someone who writes these documents as their job, has overseen their implementation from all four sides of the fence (client, contractor, arboriculturalist and TO) and spent hours reading / moderating threads complaining about DIY treework I find this amusing and frustrating in equal measure. A consultants service has just as much value as a contractors. Why the automatic assuption that a consultants fee is a rip off? Because it's just words and that's easy? A gross oversimplification. There's always someone cheaper, I'd expect contractors to be all to familiar with that. So from a different perspective you could just as easily argue that all this moaning about insurance costs, PPE and training is just padding out a contractors quote... There will also always be people who want (and are perfectly able) to do the work themselves whether that is achieved with a pen or a saw - good luck to them.
  4. How come its so high up? Trees just don't grow like that - they just add a layer onto the existing one. What's there doesn't elongate or stretch. Basal taper says ground level hasn't changed that significantly either.
  5. As it ever was in science - there is rarely a definitive answer despite the demand for one from the media.
  6. Just thinking out loud really. One of those times where you want to post, start to realise the depth of the response needed and end up being a bit superficial and trite in an effort to be short and sweet! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. What can injure one person may kill another, so if you assess against the risk of death do you not already encompass the broadest possible spectrum of 'harms'? Would it be reasonable to expect an assessor to estimate what types of injury would qualify as serious harm? Presumably trees (and those responsible for them) 'take their victims as they find them'?
  8. As treeseer alludes to, I think the patterning is likely to be related to the distribution of the ends of the rays. Some will do better than others though so it's unlikely to be uniform.
  9. Would you have your kettle keep the water hot all day and night so you can have a brew instantly or are you happy to just heat what you need? Which would use the most energy?
  10. Do you have an Immersion heater? If so do you leave it on all the time? Turning ours off when we didn't need it on (we don't need to reheat water from 20:00 - 16:00) saved us over 40% of our usage from day 1.
  11. Or they'll just rely on their historically high investment in wind energy? Interesting though...
  12. Very tidy. How precious are you over the carbon fibre having been used to the indestructibility of nineties steel?
  13. I like that. Just outside the top third though - that's got to be the goal Bet you got some sidewards glances cutting about on that Trekker...
  14. Sounds like a sprint duo - I did the same distances. Cold but dry! Only a smallish local one but British triathlon assoc registered as part of a series which brings out the hardcore nutters. 26th out of 74 so pretty content. Most importantly though I beat my mates. 1994 Zaskar. Well the frame, wheels and cranks/spds... A good nod to the past but not quite up to your standard.
  15. First duathlon of the season yesterday - decent pace for me. Always nice to be on the first page of results! Was going to take it easy on my lifts this evening but felt pretty good and ended up with an alltime deadlift PB. Couldn't ask for a better start to the season. Interval session might be a bit shorter tomorrow though... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Completed. Its one of those disorders that you tend to overlook unless its had quite a significant impact on the tree - the leaf damage can be very similar to Phytomyza ilicis which round my way is pretty much endemic.
  17. Might I suggest retitling the survey? It seems to indicate that you have reached your conclusion before you ask the questions...
  18. I don't mind the snow but the sleet can get me down a bit. Also that stage of snow thaw when the slush still has enough of a frozen base to it to be lethal on the turns. Still I doubt I do as many miles a you as I ride mainly offroad - mixing it with the traffic and roadspray would just kill it for me! Much kudos to any roadies out in the recent weather! Used to have a turbo many moons ago but it used to bore me to tears. I get the same with treadmills - just lose the will to put much effort in after half an hour of going nowhere!
  19. Nope. I just know that it's also common on Ulmus minor and Euonymous alatus. I think the literature has described the mechanism of its formation but not its utility to the tree though it seems reasonable to imagine it serves as extra protection from herbivores. Interesting that it is expressed in several genus though huh?
  20. If you'll excuse the interruption, I think this seemingly small point is actually quite critical to the robustness of a report. I have lost count of the number of statements in reports, applications, objections and the like that claim to define a target in relation to trees without any supporting evidence; "the tree is near a busy footpath". Busy compared with what? Oxford Street at Christmas? Frame the argument for the reader or they will frame it for you. The reasoning behind the evaluation should be laid bare - if it doesn't quite feel right saying "It's a guess because I have no real idea having only been on site for half an hour." then don't worry, that's just your common sense kicking in...
  21. I'm aware of the arguements and accusations of both sides - I was interested to see if anyone here has actually taken it past the fad stage. Didn't see many olympians running barefoot last year... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. As far as I know, the jury is still out on the health benefits of unshod (barefoot) running and I definately didn't see anyone out in the snow and ice a couple of weeks ago without shoes! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
