  1. Gone now. As you say better deleted than closed. Thanks to all who notified us.
  2. Fantastic. I've completely missed this growing season but normally try and bring a few things on. Never managed one of those though - perhaps a special effort is needed this autumn.
  3. Any regen in the area? They seem easily out competed round my way.
  4. First one is some kind of Callistemon, probably Callistemon vimnalis. Second one might be Luma apiculata (Chilean Myrtle)?
  5. This is a genuine institution situated not too far from me in Norwich - researcher is real too and it would be a very long winded way of grabbing an email address given that many members on here happily have them in their signature. As for the junk science comment - I'll let someone else bite on that.
  6. It was a watered down variation of the dictator game. Basically a test to see whether you could stick letting someone else benefit while you were benefitting yourself.
  7. Well that wasn't utterly partisan at all. Prime me to think about how considerate a person I am and then ask me whether I would support hardline climate change policies to make the world a better place for others in the future? Perhaps that was the point - but if it wasn't it's hardly a valid survey. Might win £200 though (and no Greenpeace can't have any of it.)
  8. You could it with a blindfold this year to spice it up a bit? Or perhaps all the judges could line up to try to knock your GoPro off your helmet with throwlines as you go round? We've a few ideas to add more variety this year but ultimately it involves a MEWP so it's never going to be the Olympic 100m sprint final.
  9. Thetford Duathlon yesterday - shaved a minute of last years time around the same course (bit wetter too IMO). Came in 18th/57 in my age group and 35th/123 overall so 28 -31%ish. Getting there mate...
  10. No it's an acknowledgement that soil density is of critical importance. A 200mm loose uncompacted layer is less of a problem than 100mm compacted. The 'wordiness' sometimes has a point! You're right about the collar though, any fill would need to kept clear of direct contact.
  11. It's bring your own - if you are particularly persuasive you might be able to get a loaner but I wouldn't rely on it.
  12. Big ones too. In exposed locations on the coast round here with worse unions than that shown in the OP. I'd also quietly challenge the idea that a bit of a level change is going to be a problem. Sycamore is hardly a fragile species in my experience and I doubt many healthy trees (multistemmed or not) would suffer from anything less than 250mm of loose fill. I think the main issue with pruning them is finding an aesthetically pleasing final cut when removing the central leader of a branch back to two opposite and equal laterals. On young to semi-mature trees it can look very odd. Even more so when too much has been taken off and you end up with vertical regrowth as well...
  13. Agreed. Looks like almost every other multistemmed Sycamore I've ever seen.
  14. Yep. Provided everyone has had a go - climb as many times as you like.
  15. Cos we'd probably only have five competitors but we'd need to find a tree, judges and prizes! Besides the way the event is set up doesn't really advantage either system IMO. That said, no-one's ever won with SRT. Now there's a challenge Mr Curtis.
  16. You're both competent and qualified climbers are you not? Capable of climbing a tree safely and choosing the appropriate equipment to do so? Why would I intervene to stop you? Explain your climb to the judges, get up there, ring some bells, don't hurt anyone and leave the tree as you found it. Results count - gizmos less so
  17. Sorry. Haven't the time i'm afraid - just thought I'd give you a pointer as to avoid being labelled a nutter.
  18. One could start by not insinuating that they're asleep or that they are sheep. Perhaps they just have different priorities to yours? Perhaps they wouldn't agree with you no matter how 'awake' you accepted they were.
  19. Aha someone to quiz! I had ITBS last year after upping my running milage too quickly. I did the stretches, bought a foam roller etc - absolute murder. The more I stretched, the worse the ITBS seemed to get. So just as an experiment I stopped the stretching / rolling while keeping to the programmed running progression. It went away and I've not had it since. Could stretching inflammed tissue have made things worse?
  20. In my experience that approach would be applicable to less than 5% of developments in which trees are on site. What about indirect constraints? The latest arb journal has a paper that suggests avoiding constructing dwellings within 30m of trees to avoid complaints about their physical presence impacting on quality of life for the inhabitants. Apply that to an average plot and see what your developable area is!
