  1. Fair enough, sorry if I misunderstood your post. I stand by my last comment though - the forum can be really useful to homeowners wanting some advice but on some occasions it can't replace on-site advice.
  2. Nice photos John - and nice to read you on here again. I ditched my f/book acccount last year so haven't been keeping up with your news. I note on the other thread where you mention this tree you said it was being re-assessed to determine the level of decay...do you do this using a mallet and ear or something fancier?
  3. The homeowners advice forum can address certain issues for homeowners but can't come up with all the answers remotely. If someone posts a piccy of a fungal bracket, we can tell them what it is. But more site-specific issues such as tree safety and whether or not to remove or prune can't really be properly assessed on a forum....just like you wouldn't want a building surveyor giving advice about cracks in your wall over the phone. It's easy to say fell it...but the OP wants to retain it so therefore needs some on-site advice really.
  4. I'm pretty sure there isn't a Jamesons bottle in that picture!
  5. This book is pretty good: [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Up-By-Roots-James-Urban/dp/B001F93W64/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372839269&sr=8-2&keywords=james+urban+roots[/ame] but I got it for a lot less than £105!
  6. I think you ought not to have picture 13 in your gallery.
  7. Really well done Rob. All the hard work paid off!
  8. Well, it was quite funny. I've now printed all 97 pages of the draft so can start reading it in the car when rain stops play today.
  9. Jeez, I am embarrassed to have posted the thread now...must actually read the darn thing... Nice to see your colleagues on Tuesday Tony...glad I gave you all a chuckle with my recent ident gaff :-)
  10. Good news: the AA have acquired a copy of the draft standard as a single PDF file which makes reading through the whole document much easier. You can get a copy here: New BS 8545 draft out for consultation - - Arboricultural Association
  11. Nah, Dulwich and Kingston. Otherwise I'd like to have called on your manor!
  12. I've just emailed and am waiting to hear back...left it a bit late but I'm hoping the Jodrell Theatre has lots of seats!
  13. I've just found out about this seminar which fits in nicely with a job in London on the Wednesday:thumbup1: Is anyone else going? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71044405/Flyer%2C%20Experts%20question%20time.pdf
  14. Anyone had a chance to read through this yet? (I haven't!).
  15. I think a CV is definitely relevant for a consultant position. Having a good technical knowledge of arboriculture is one thing (essential) but also useless if you are not able to successfully communicate. A CV shows a prospective employer that you are able to communicate clearly. There's a skill to concisely summing up all your skills and experience on two sides of A4 - not dissimilar to the skill needed to write a good tree report. I'd agree that CVs are unnecessary for a cutting job though.
  16. The long awaited BS8545 was released in draft today. You can read it at: Trees: from nursery to independence in the landscape ? Recommendations | DRS This standard is in some ways long overdue - the rate of failure for newly planted trees is way too high and much of this is due to poor preparation and planting practice. This standard therefore sets the bar for better planting...and your comments are all welcome on the BSI website as this draft is open for consultation until Aug 31st.
  17. Don't let publishing costs put you off. Self Publishing, Book Printing and Publishing Online - Lulu
  18. Great idea. You could ask for volunteers to write a species entry each.
  19. You were paid to inspect the tree? Or just interested? If you were paid to inspect it, what did you recommend?
