  2. Yep Agree with Rupe on this
  3. nope two ,, brought in by the new government effective date 6 April 2012,
  4. importantly does he intend that you are getting these holidays as paid or unpaid ? If he's paying In all truth ,, if your boss gets you in now to do unpaying work then in most likelyhood , they wont be getting paid themselves .. as I dont know of any companys that get paid not to deliver services put yourself in their shoes , he's paying you , through holiday pay granted you may not want to take holidays on those days & have them at some other time But if you turn in for paid work now , which isnt likely to be earning the company any money, tiding the yard sharping saws or whatever then you later take holidays in good weather periods when the company can be out making money [income from which is used to pay things like wages] ,they either dont earn anything or earn less money, due to productivity [ men on site hours ] or they pay out more to someone to do your work whilst your on paid holiday , In the current climate anyone who can keep employing people is doing very well indeed please also bear in mind that an employer can dispense with your service within 2 years & you have no redress for unfair dismissal Personally I'd thank the boss for the paid time I was sat at tucked up @home on wages whilst its snowing just another perspective
  5. Plenty of like company schemes lets take Ukas Iso 9001 + Nhss 18 , this sector scheme doesnt work across the piece , because it is pre-exclusive... As any company must first be Ukas iso 9001 accredited to go forward , then they pay an astronomic sum to be accredited + costs to infrastructure - implimentation & maintenance additionality Why because Ukas charge a fortune to the Awarding bodies in order for them to able to award this ,, so they in turn charge like wise .. even after all of this there is no clear benefit to the company other than they can bid for works on the Highway agency roads .. 80 / 20 award criteria that I mentioned is out there boy & girls plus given the FACT that the vast majority of none HA roads are effectively managed on a daily bases are done so outside of the sector scheme ,, WHATS THE POINT >>? this perhaps shows the appitite for the scheme itself Bodies can make up as many quals & hurdles and badges & clubs as they like, for individuals and business alike ,, but if it does not make sense its not going to work Please see my above post re ....... will it work > ? as an individual Rolo Quality Assurance: ROLO
  6. What Dan says Lantra awards do expire Nptc City & Guilds currently dont , however updates are recommended especially if your a hobby user .. as with much in life re the Saw you get what you pay for ,, if you intend to keep & use get a pro grade saw it should last in your application a very long time Iain
  7. Hello All a very interesting thread indeed a concept that has in intention much merit,, As a lowly business owner , employer, contractor, consultant , assessor & a multitude of other hats , I can see this from many aspects Will it work ? if in its creation / management it sets Glass ceilings if it doesnt promote & aid advancement if it doesnt recognise the skills . life experience i.e. Prior accredited learning if it is eleatist if it precludes those who cant afford it if the rank & file dont believe in it if the industry dont support it [ by this I dont mean those in Ivory towers ] If companys can recruit staff without it ? If companys do recriut based on it , can we claim againest the findings of the scheme ? if someone looses their job , does their industry clock time pause or stop only to re start anew in order for them to meet the time frames to advance on timeline in industry ? the client employing the companies who are employing the individuals dont care if there are too Many chefs in that line up if we the industry devide into 2 clear sectors being those who can engage via sufficent income streams based on client support & profit and those who can't for the same factors then what ? Often We the industry are only as good as the money in the bank & personal company time will allow .. despite every aspiration to perhaps be more points to ponder perhaps I wish well to any initiative which increases our industry perspective and awareness as this is a good thing.. IAIN

  22. Well dont put your self off this as a career !! it has a lot to offer.. I started my own business 13 years ago ,,, I grew up from a family background mix of businesses & Farming been in the Forces, spent time in management roles of both the retail grocery & Food haulage distribution sectors,, then took a wild tangent and started doing this,, when I started off I took on any task that folks would pay me to do , then slowly gained equipment, tools, experience & qualifications and clients ... A simple way to look at it is ,,, if in twenty years time you look back on life & say I wonder if I tried >> what would have happened >> and where would this have taken me ?? You'll only ever truly know if you give it a go .... at the fork in the road ahead you go >>> this is not an easy option & business isnt for everyone ,, being good on tools doesnt a business make......... However its a bloody good start ... I hope once our training school gets under way,, to also offer business advice options as well as vocational [hands on] and acedemic [paperwork] qualifications all the best guys Iain
