  5. Hi I thought i'd share my recent experiences. Air Spading clays soils especially this time of year for me has always been a ball ache, I use an Air Spade 2000 with 150cfm nozzle and a 220 cfm 4 tool compressor. I undertook some excavation work this week and shifting the compacted clay was next to impossible and extremely frustrating let alone highly embarrassing! Anyway I thought I'd contact ADP group they sell Air Spades, and are quite possibly the countrys leading experts in Air Spade and Hydrovac excavation. They've got millions tied up in Hydrovac excavation machinery they contract themselves as well as sell and hire My thoughts were clarified as soon as I mentioned clay and Air Spades, i didn't even have tell them my problem, the Air Spade doesn't work efficiently on clay soil, especially this time of year when its desiccated. The only way to tackle clay is hydrovacing, but what damage this will have on roots I don't know. ADP GROUP LTD | Surveying | Vacuum Excavation | Drilling | Vector Sales - Air Spade Sales If you look of the spec of the new bigger 3000 Air Spade you'll see exactly what I'm getting at
  6. Hi treeseer, trees on this very wet boggy little island rarely make it past 2 years if planted too deep. My subscribed theory is that trees usually with girdled roots are planted in pits with compacted sides, here in the UK glazed clay being the main culprit, the compaction inhibits lateral root growth, leading to girdled roots, IMO just the same as being pot bound However I'm no expert and can only speak of what I see here in the Uk
  7. Sorry to read about your brother Jose may he rest in peace...
  8. Sorry nearly forgot to answer about adaptive buttressing, I know what you mean , but is it really girdling roots that are stopping the buttressing? From experience trees (depending on species) that don't buttress are usually very sickly specimens regardless of girdling or not. Telegraph poles I term themes Plenty of semi mature trees show no signs of buttress development, which could stem from numerous reasons, I thinks most often down to genetics I remember when planting too deep was the main blame for girdling roots, I never subscribed to that theory
  9. You used the key word David 'appear' to be constricting, pruning cuts are definite entry points for disease, I've seen street cherrys put up with some really severe girdling and still live to tell the tale, some of the girdling roots were huge. Thinking back to my stump grinding days, I think I'm safe to say I rarely saw a beech without some type of girdling root. Like I said mate very interesting topic
  10. Interesting thread Dave, my thoughts regarding large girdling roots especially roots showing signs of grafting are to leave well alone
