  1. Ha ha, now youve said that, i recon your doomed!
  2. Ok, just to throw this in the pot. I once saw a very small twig, and i do mean small, catch a 5 wire sheathed low voltage set, the wires bounced up and down and crossed. The sheathing as it turned out was very badly decayed and only had about 20% coverage remaining so the top 2 wires stayed crossed and tripped out. So just for the exercise, would you say it should have been ok to work that close, and who should be responsible for cost of repair?
  3. With you now Geoff, well explained:thumbup1: I missread your comments:blushing:
  4. 25:1 instead of 50:1 gives less lubricant? How does that work out Geoff?
  5. Like i say, Police no bother, but he WILL get a surprise one day, Like i did!
  6. You CAN tow a chipper behind another trailer as long as the first trailer is articulated, i,e, with a fifth wheel or supporting pivot, not a towball. If you want to class a towing vehicle as a showmans, you can get away with allsorts, all you need to do is permanenetly fix a generator to it. You also get free road tax too! Feel free to enter into the world of unkowns though when VOSA pull you
  7. Lol! For some reason i cant post pics! All i will say is dont worry about being pulled by the police, they dont know either!
  8. Have a word with Jonesie then, he has 200t at £452 and 338 at £386!
  9. At this time of year i would try and stay away from anything above 30-40mm cuts or white bark,-it will bleed! I personally dont like pruning them anyway, especially reductions as it can introduce early decay. Would probably try and promote a lift and possible light thin, explain they are a short lived tree and when it gets too big, have it out and start again. My ten
  10. Looks real handy winch that Stevie:thumbup1: I recon if you let some of the air out of them tyres it should pull like a train too!
  11. A rear handle 200 would be a posh chipper saw IMO! Are you saying there is a rear handled 339? Not heard if it myself. What about something like a 290? I know its a semi pro, but 56cc and a little ove £400, cant go wrong can you?
  12. Matt, if you are meaning I gave the tutors a "slur" i think you need to read carefully again. You will find that Jack never told us what advice he had been given following this fell. When asked he kept answering with such as this, hence why people kept criticizing his teaching; Jack also asked a fair question, and i gave a part answer but still Jack never revealed what specific advice had been given by his "tutor" Matt, i am sure you must realise there are many people on this forum, like yourself who come here to learn, and i think you will find on this thread especially, almost every post has been constructive. Jack has posted pictures on here, and credit to him for doing so, but it became apparent to me that he had recieved praise for what he had done, but could not disclose specific advice he had been given prior, or after the fell. As for you Jack, you did the right thing by posting the pics. It seems you are keen to learn and took any comments about your work well, as at one point lastnight it seemed like a rapid fire of posts! This place has a very large audience, so keep posting pics etc and use any info you get in a positive way to help with your learning, and good luck, but keep safe.
  13. Yep, all sounds great, but the point i am getting at is, although the tree ended up in the right place, your instructor should have said; "Yes, thats a nice first fell, but here is how you can improve, and i will explain the risks associated with doing it the way you did"
  14. Stevie worded it very well. In my opinion the gob should have been deeper to pick up the wider buttresses, therefore more directional control. Did the instructor point this out, or say anything about the problems of removing buttresses unnecessarily?
  15. Too right bud. BUT, a tutor should not be giving praise for that type of felling! Jack, go back to your tutor and ask him if there is anything you could improve on following that fell. If he has nothing to add, get another instructor. As Hama says, i hope you take this criticizm as constructive:thumbup1:
  16. Sorry Hama and Jack, i did not add, i would not be happy with that hinge on a medium size fell:thumbdown:
  17. Ok, Jack, it looks like Hama has touched on part of what i was asking for. If this is one of your first medium fells, then so be it, but i hope your tutor gave you a bit more than a pat on the back! It is not to discredit you, its your tutors not giving you correct guidance.
  18. Was your tutor happy with the result?
  19. From the pics it appears the first tree would have had two cuts to get the top out towards the retained tree, then flop the stem. The second tree would have clear felled where the mondeo is parked. Just my ten. Pete.
  20. Thats interesting as it is officially still a temporary structure? The last time my father put one up, he was told if the poly was buried, it would need PP but if battened above ground it wouldnt. Perhaps different regs in different countys?
  21. I realise you are going to fell them anyway Frank, and this was only a hyperthetical thread(that has developed some interesting responses), but, i would still love to see the final felling cuts:sneaky2: Dont forget, i am now back from my hols and would happily come along when you do the job just to take the......, i mean observe:001_tt2:
  22. Going by the pics Frank, i would say there is reasonable live wood around the damaged area to hold a careful(no shock loading) climber. As for the horizontal crack, i personally would ignore that and treat the tree as if it were hollow, after all, you have already accepted it as damaged. Just judge the tree by the amount of live wood remaining, i think you would feel there is still enough to bear a climber.
  23. Ok then, if you want to go on the serious side, me, being one of slightly large build, would probably climb it myself. Yet again i would not ask anyone to do a job i felt i wouldnt do myself! However i do believe Mesterh has it covered;
  24. In short, if it was my job you would be climbing them:thumbup:
