  1. Second that, in type A it's a ridiculous idea that you have to wheat type c's in the tree in my opinion anyway.
  2. A gopro 3 silver is £279 this is basically a go pro 2 in a new slimmer housing with wifi built in. So yes it's a good deal unless you think wifi is something you will want/need.
  3. So many variables, seen plenty of large multi leader ones to, I think maybe what I said earlier was wrong and misleading. It should be more along the lines of could lead to multiple leaders over developing laterals and lessen the trees safe life in the Urban setting. I've climbed so many sometimes is easy to forget the ones that didn't alarm me that had been topped out. How long do they live? how big will they get? I don't think we have any mature trees yet to find this out.
  4. It takes a little getting used to, it well balanced so if there is slack on release you will give it a wobble if that makes sense.
  5. I got over my gear addiction when i realised i just didn't need it and rather spend that money on myself. My gear is pure function it helps me do my job efficiently and thats it. Saying that I reckon i need to spend £1000 on climbing kit at the arb fair and this probably still will not get me all i need. But i have not bought anything in over a year.
  6. For us spending on chainsaws is pretty low, we buy chain by the reel, if I was to give an average £150 a month this is just on the chainsaws mind. Kit maintenance like chippers and trucks £2000 a month easily sometimes more. I bet there are production cutter here spending 3 times more on chainsaws but less than half on kit maintenance.
  7. MS460 rugged and dependable. Or my new MS201 I'm just scared to drop it as it'll crack like an egg.

    Root plate

There is an equal number of this kind of thing going on over here, PPE has nothing to do with it, most climbers in the states only wear a helmet no steel toe cap or trousers wish I could do the same over here........
  10. By this sentimentality any tree work is admission of liability is it not? We explain to the client the reasons behind bracing besides we also had insurance to cover our decisions and work to my knowledge there has never been a case. Lets be realistic though poor tree work can also be a cause of failure good tree work is preventative but no real guarantee. You should go to Germany some of the cities there have trees full and I mean full of braces from static steel, dynamic and strap n buckle type.
  11. Redwoods are not susceptible to windthrow at the root plate this is a very rare occurance, they are far more susceptible to failure at the stem through high winds or lightning. Topping out and the subsequent adventitious leaders that will grow from this point will be on poor attachments these will be high up in the crown and far more exposed to the wind leading to a much greater risk of future failure, after about 20-30 years easily you could have multiple heavy leaders over 30ft and greater sail area. Not only this it will encourage laterals to over develop again leading to a much higher chance of failure. Here is a thread of one we did earlier, this tree was topped out as a knee jerk reaction after the 87 storms in 2009 it lost one of its leaders narrowly missing the property, on inspection of the topping point we felt further collapse likely, other possible management options was going to be costly and would have to be repeated at great cost indefinitely over the life of the tree, so fell and replant was the best option. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/picture-forum/7524-seqouia-takedown.html You may be able to see the failure in the pic where Qtip is sat on the topping point, also notice how much larger the laterals have gotten some of these had also failed over the years. We have done plenty of Sequoiadendron and Sequoia semps. over the years.
  12. On a lanyard for example you could clip the biner to the becket creating a short double line second anchor point. Or even clip another system to it for more support, another pulley to give more advantage etc.
  13. Why not install an invasive steel cable, along with some form of reduction seems Beech copes quite well with this from my own experience.
  14. Your no fool Mike:sneaky2:
  15. As soon as you top redwood you pretty much reduce the lifespan of these incredible trees to 20-30 years. It also starts a costly cycle of future maintenance. As much as I don't like it I,ve done a few myself, certainly would never reccomend it and would always strongly advise against it.
  16. Like broadsword has said it's an old solution used to do the same with a fixe to myself until the hitchclimber came out. Now my cinch is worn out i am going back to a knot on my lanyard and may try it out again although leaving the becket clear has it advantages to.
  17. They look like they have been hit as hard as you'd want to depending on reason
  18. 43 so your the same age as Beddes 9 time and current world champion. But I like the way you casually throw it out that after the little comp your also off to do a triathlon I wish I came now, at the very least to hurl abuse at Marcus.
  19. Well good luck to you, I wouldn't actively chase unpaid work but appreciate your keen to get a foot in. It can be tough to start out, if you want to make this a rewarding career then positive mental attitude and have fun, to many already working for peanuts in this tough trade.
  20. I've always been self employed, it took a while to actually find reliable work a few months of just days here and there. I started at £75 but I was a head gardener at an Oxford college for 5 years with chainsaw tickets and my own saw, competent at pruning apple trees, hedgecutting etc and worked my balls off, sure learning to run the ropes rigging took a little time this job is not rocket science you either have the aptitude for it and learn fast or you will find it hard to get a foot in. £75 I think is fair if your keen and intrested, after all the employer does not have to cover your kit, holiday, training contributions etc etc. I tried employed this just lasted 7 months.
  21. AKU Cresta's would be better rock climbing shoes are more for toe heel and smearing on rock the slick nature would be a nightmare on wet wood. I wear LaSportiva's trango evo's but they are pricey. Dubious about the arbpro's like I am at anything arb specific.
  22. Gri-gri, Eddy, Petzl I'd even F8 revolver technique it makes no odds. In my opinion a GriGri or Cinch are not really suitable as primary single line work positioning tools even if I would/do use them myself. I just find it frustrating that the leap from accessing a tree single line to working it single line cannot seemingly be made by some.
  23. It was srtwp and not only access, it was based on a RADS systems. Admittedly the majority of what they saw was on a doubled rope hitch set-up. But we were from memory praised for using SRT and leaving access lines and they saw no issue working off 10mm single line in an ascent descent configuration with a suitable device, after all its just common sense. It all depends on who you get on the day. As for the Zig Zag being single line compatible don't hold your breath unfortunately in my opinion they did not have the right people involved in design and development, whilst the friction part was nice the rest of the device felt flawed I hope it improves in mk2
  24. This is just something I cannot understand? During our AAAC 5 years ago now we climbed single line and they loved it, in fact everything else about the company was an issue other than the way we worked which they were extremely complimentary about. We passed on the strength of our work and not the paper side which restored my faith a tiny bit in the AAAC scheme. And now for an external audit you have to use a doubled single line what craziness is this? Not that I care much for using single line myself got bored of it a long time ago for the majority of my UK climbing single line represents access only for me but i recognise it is a good technique that works for many. I agree 100% that Petzl should make the device compatible with both single line and doubled single line use but I doubt they will.
  25. But you will need to climb to use a crane?
