  1. yep and have a good knife handy!
  2. Truckers hitch for securing loads on trailers. Bowline on the bight for towing
  3. No worries. seem's odd you can only get a weeks hire. These folks have an Ipswich Depot http://www.facelift.co.uk/depot/
  4. Buxtons had odd sizes left they some times appear on Ebay too.
  5. Yep I'd agree with that!
  6. I'm not unlucky I play by the rules as do a lot of the local lads around here we are not bothered by the agency. EA enforcement officers don't drive badged vehicles either so you wouldn't recognise one. Only Hydrometrics and Ops delivery teams use badged vehicles. If you live a good wat from a EA office it'll reduce your chances massivly of ever having a visit!
  7. We have used Nationwide access in the past, they were very good, they will do onsite assesments to tell you what works best. I'm fairly sure we got a 2 day hire from them too.
  8. You could be the lucky one not having the EA looking at what you do. I see how the EA work regularly and more and more people are getting into trouble around here. The Ea are even going out on the roadside checks with VOSA & HMRCE round here. They will prosecute for not being a registered waste carrier or holding an exemption. They also sniff out a large fire from 5 miles and will take aaction against it round here,
  9. I agree with the bit about the EA, As far as they are concerned you will need to register an exemption, as woodchip is a waste product of a mechanical process! in their eyes.
  10. Did they start life as tracked chippers? They look like they've just been unbolted from the undercarriage and bolted to a trailer chassis.
  11. Well I think I'm quite lucky in the respect I don't own to much machinery! the six saws are in a locked steel cabinet bolted down in the garage. The garage is behind locked gates with the Ifor parked infront of them which is chained down. I'm lucky that I don't need a chipper very often so I hire one in and keep overnight storage to absolute minimum though a 150 will go in the garage. I'm insured with the NFU I'm loyal customer I had a nasty accident a few years ago writing off my previous rover, The NFU were so helpfull and friendly it was all sorted so quickly and easily I just don't want to risk using some one else. my premium has gone up about 20 quid in 4 years. But again I'm probably lucky in that I don't need PL and EL cover for climbing work as I don't do any. Lee do you insure your trailers?? I seem to remember you posting pics of quite a few varying Ifors? my trailers cost me 30 quid each a year to insure as an add on to my vehicle policy. I couldn't sleep at night if they were not insured as I know of 14 that have been nicked round here since December 1st! I don't think you are to bad a deal Lee my mate pays 200 quid a mponth for a 18 feet square unit. and doesn't have the luxury of using it as an opreating centre
  12. This will go round in circles for ever! there will allways be them that do and them that don't use MEWPS. I've witnessed the use of them a fair bit just lately and one thing is obvious a MEWP is no different to any other piece of plant in one respect that to get the most from it you need skill and experiance of operation. most people can pick the basics up quite quickly but at the end of the day it takes experiance to be an effective operator of any plant.
  13. Aup Ben, I heard about them! he was like an excited school kid after getting them going for you! Glad he didn't let you down after a recommendation!
  14. OOOPs sorry! They are Hella The A bar ones need sinking into a hole 2"x1"x3/4" and are these http://www.dun-bri.com/showdetails.asp?id=281 The ones between the side and Indicator lamps are these http://www.dun-bri.com/showdetails.asp?id=280 Both are avliable in white , amber, red but all are clear when unlit. I got mine from the local Auto electricians, but Dun-bri's prices are rather close.
  15. LED Side lights!
  16. Sounds like you have the heavy duty option most leccy board 110's are. It is worth checking the Vin plate though I had a mate who had the uprated chassis and springs but LRSV didn't stamp the new gross weight on at construction! caused him a few problems when he was tugged! I think Pencontools tipper autolift or was it brit tip, he mentioned it earlier in this thread
  17. Sounds like you had a good un Lee, there were a few made! not many, though in my opinion there is one big problem with the gearbox in a TD5 it needs a 6th gear!! Was yours a 90 by anychance Lee?!
  18. I'd like a magazine that 1) Did gear reviews particularly of new products. 2) First drives of the new light commercial vehicles and review of how they suit the arb industry, looking at things like in cab storage, towing capacitys etc. I think its was Euro arb that did an article on a mog, it was so technical waffling on about engine specs for pages and other specifications, but at the end it never summed it up as to wheter it was suitable to arb work, A lot is down to personal choice but its possible to do a review. Bob Beech manages to right good first drive articles for Trucking magazine 3) machinery articles/buyers guides you know the sort of thing test 6 splitters and then mark them. 4) It would be nice to see some tests like bob has done where the mag cuts through 5 different flip lines from varying manufacturers etc. 5) I also like reading about other contractors work, I used to like the Woodwise article in FBT, I sometimes learned something/had a laugh at what had happend to them it was interesting. I| agree the H&S stuff needs to be in there I don't particularly like reading all of it but I can skip bits that don't interest me.
  19. I agree, I for one don't want to be knocking on the door of one of my mates wives/girlfriends and trying to explain why there other half is laid up in A&E Or worse cos he never had his PPE on. Could you really live with yoursel if one of your mates had an accident and you could have said or done something to prevent it?
  20. Well! that depends. I drive lots of TD5's, If you find the 300TDi a bit slugish taking off up hill you will find the TD5 worse probably. They are incredibly sluggish in 1st. That coupled with the fact it takes a while to get used to the fly-by-wire throttle. Once a TD5 is rolling its actually a fairly good lump, though fuel economy isn't as good as a 300TDI. Jeremy Fearne and JE Engineering both offer powerlinks or chipping for a TD5. I know a couple of people who have had theirs chipped and they say the differance is amazing. Its a case of how far you want to go!! I have a friend who has spent probably about 1500 pound tuning a 300TDI and fitted a gas flowed head etc, his performance is very good, he can cruise well above the motorway limit with 2.5 ton of trailer on but like everything it comes at a cost!! I've just accepted Landys ain't fast and I plod everywhere, I really don't know what to do when mine is cream crackerd the fancy pants ECU of a TD5 puts me off a 7-8 year old motor it could lead to expensive repairs.
  21. that and the fact a disco will be lighter and have a different transfer ratio. I bought my 130 from Gary and couldn't belive just how laid back and honest he was. I allways keep an eye on his website to see what he's got.
  22. whats your definition of top speed?! I wouldn't expect a 300TDI 130 Loaded to gross weight and towing a Chipper to Be capable of any more than 65ish. Land rovers were never designed to be speed machines. A disco may well cruise at 90 on the flat but a standard defender never will. A friend fitted Disco gearing to his 110 and it just couldn't pull it let alone with the caravan on, he went back to defender gearing. Pecontools, Was that G&S Drake by any chance? You couldn't find a more genuine secondhand car salesman.
  23. Did you buy it straight from the utility company? It may be worth checking know one has swapped the transfer gears for discovery ones? But from the scenario you describe above I don't think its unacceptable to have o use lowbox to pull away uphill witha full chip box and chipper in tow.
  24. Be carefull doing that, Make sure before you start that your 110 has a gross weight of 3500kg and not 3050kg. that 450kg makes a hell of a differance to payload. Defenders are ok but if I was solely working on the tarmac/paved areas I'd have a small truck, be it isuzu or mitsubishi. Defenders have lots of drawbacks including the small cab. But they come into their own towing and off road. I'm not a fan of mogs. They look fun but I think I'd soon fall out with one if I had it on a daily basis!
  25. you did the right think, if you are not totally happy with a 300 pulling away, you would hate a TD5.
