  1. I hate those screw type splitters, also heard of to many accidents! I want a 4 or 6 way huge hyd splitter next year
  2. Tis hard graft, but i love it! the weather has been lovely though it got very windy this pm.
  3. You know him mate! Infact you've climbed for him! same guy as in the top pic, He was only up there for 5 mins climbed straight up and back down again just showing the student,
  4. probably so in this case, to get a forwarder in you'd need to do some serious work to make an extraction route. Access isn't great. There seems to be a lot of interest in local outlets for it, and many people who walk in the woods are asking where they can buy it. The local council gets a sum back per bag sold to, that helps pay for re planting.
  5. i've had a couple of days in the local woods with a contractor friend we've been shifting timber about with the landy winch and loading the charcoal kiln for a burn. Today started at 6.30 am when we loaded a kiln on to the trailer to cart the 3 miles to the wood. Picture is from the wrong angle but the kiln is 7'6" in diameter and was rather tight between trees coming down the wood land track, Last pic is of the guy I was working for showing me and the student placement on site how quick he was at climbing compared to us! Nothing very special should have got more pics but I never remember when I'm working!
  6. Thats oh so true the tractor at work requires pin numbers before it starts! Then it knows which employee is driving it!

I really hope you don't regret these words in 30 years time when you realise there is a bit more to it than tingly hands! like when you won't be able to hold a mug of tea or tie your laces or play with your grandchildrens toys with them., I know one person in hos 50's and he can't do any of the above very well.
  9. It did get a tad damp on the friday afternoon! lol
  10. Wot like I do LOL!!!!:):): seriously its a good idea I've got the collins book its a great help.
  11. I agree with all that what i was getting at was, if you get a job sheet that says fell willow at XYZ and you can't tell the differance between the willow and the birch next to it, there could be a costy mistake!
  12. Surely thats ok while your on surgery but when your on removals you need to be able to recognise species. Ident comes with practice and experiance though mines getting better all the time. It used to be awfull.

:dito: I agree entirely. My business is part time at the moment but I'd never ask anyone that works for me to do anything I wasn't prepared to do. I'd also be ashamed if I felt they couldn't raise concerns with me. In the day job I know our gaffer will back us all the way if we have problems with working practice thats how it should be. once worked for a "don't Give a dam employer" My health suffered greatly I developed HAVS and bad knees, he wasn't interested so I waited till his busiest time of year when he was flat out, turned round one friday night and said I strat a new job monday get Stuffed! I had no respect for him as he didn't for me.

I agree with everything you've said, but I recently had issues with the one above, The biggest saws we are allowed at work our 372's. I had a job to cross cut a big ash, If I'd have had my 660 it would have taken no more than 1hr with a 372 it took nearly two days! it took two days because we are only allowed 2hrs trigger time a day on the 372 and it also resulted in a lot of fafing around trying to roll and move large bits of timber. If we'd have been allowed 1hrs trigger time on the 660 it would have been a lot quicker and cut out a hell of a lot of manual handling. there has to be a common ground. between the two extremes.
  17. I run 017, its small and handy to keep by the chipper, also brilliant for hedge laying. Ms260 my all round everyday saw I've had it 4 years its bombproof and prefer it over a mates 341. MS660 I have 3 different sizes of bars for it, a great work horse. i'm looking for a 460 to bridge the 260 - 660 gap this year.
  18. I'll be at APF and AA

sorry think you've mis understood slightly I should have explained better, we have to fill in our hrs sheet for all arb kit like blowers, pole pruners, chainsaws and tracked chipper not just blowers specifically. It takes less than 5 mins a week to fill in,

Fair enough, but bear in mind the likes of school leavers entering the industry, they won't know any better and in years to come could have disabling injuries, that is less likely now as modern technology improves. People harp on aboyt the cost to small businesses but if those small businesses take time to educate their emloyees and take a few precautions it cuold save lots of time and money in future. If I'd gone into arb straight from school I'd have probably been ok. As it is I now do a job I love but am on restricted hrs for my own health, so yes I am now looking after myself.

Thats your opinion and your more than welcome to it, however, Do You have white finger?! I DO Im 28 I developed it from using an 1" air gun all day every day for 3 yrs as an apprentice, I didn;t know any better and my one man band employer had no H&S full stop even though he was required to by law. I now suffer from circulation problems, tingling fingers and very painful fingers in the winter months. I'm now in a situation where I have to be carefull with vibration levels otherwise I'll make it worse. I can't do anything about the damage thats been done, but I can limit any further damage by being careful. I find it really sickening that several members on here rubbish all the H&S and other rules and regs as a whole without looking at the bigger picture. I just hope none of you employ young people and end up causing them long term health issues. If you do hopefully they will sue for compensation. Perhaps then the macho we cann climb anything run anything flaunt the law attitude may change.
