  1. There are lots of different solutions, like you say choose what works for you. For me, transit sized trucks don't have any practical purpose. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with sending employees out in a vehicle that has to be overloaded in order to get the job done. That is not intended as a dig at you Tom, but I have been put in that position many times as an employee, and I came to the conclusion that since a driving licence is probably the most important qual I hold, it wasn't worth risking.
  2. 10 tonner is the same physical size as a 7.5 tonner, tbh there arent many places you can't get one of those. When you can't get it on a drive then the mini loader comes along, drag the stuff a bit further. Thats why the 18 tonner and Navara combo works so well for me, small truck for getting in tight spaces, big truck for the heavy work, and I use the Nav as my family car too.
  3. So you are saying its ok to break the law, as long as you dont get caught? The reason I won't run another for tree work is simple maths: A cubic metre of chip weighs about 350kg. A vehicle with a 1 tonne payload can therefore carry about 3 cubic metres max. Most Transit sized trucks have a capacity of 6-7 cubic metres, and a payload of less than 1 tonne. 7.5 tonners are even worse, 3 tonne payload, up to 15 cubic metre capacity. If I wanted a dedicated chip truck, then I would buy a 10 or 12 tonne tipper.
  4. I don't see the problem with O license either, having run one for the last 3 years. Drivers hours rules aren't exactly onerous in arb work either. Regarding driver licensing, there are a fair few people I can think of who are dangerous enough driving a small car, the thought of them being let loose in a Transit without further training is pretty terrifying tbh.
  5. Nice idea, but it's a pipe dream. There will never be any relaxation in regulation barring a revolution and total anarchy, and if that happens tree cutting is going to be a pretty low priority. Much more likely to go the other way, all commercial vehicles required to have an o licence, tacho and regular inspections. After all, when has any regulation on business ever truly been relaxed?
  6. I also run an 18 tonne lorry. Right tool for the job, I just don't have a job that is right for a transit.
  7. I will never run a transit or similar vehicle again for tree work, they are totally unfit for purpose imo.
  8. Cut the roof off the Subaru and I'll build you a tipper for that.
  9. Not done an L200 yet, but since Mitsubishi hold nearly 50% of the market its only a matter of time.
  10. Yes, its an option we have considered. Ally would save about 50% of the weight over steel, but costs nearly double. The bare steel version only weighs about 150kg, so for doubling the cost you only save about 75kg. It is something I will persue when I have time, just for the bling factor!
  11. Hopefully yes, cheers for the offer!
  12. Funnily enough I am quoting for a single cab 110 hi cap at the moment. Should be possible, but I need to measure one up to make sure it will fit around the fuel filler.
  13. What pruner head do you recommend for a silky pole saw? Bought the Silky Singtung today and it was so rubbish I took it back 3 hours later. Kept sticking shut, then wouldnt close at all. Did I get a duff one or are they all rubbish?
  14. Perforated septum.
  15. Think it's lapsed by now, but I probably don't really need it in the foreseeable future. Most of my work is domestic, when I started the construction online application I was quoting for several new construction type clients, but that has all gone quiet. If things do pick up I might consider redoing it.
  16. Interesting points, I am in the same position as the op myself actually. I completed CHAS, then started construction online as I thought it would be very simple to complete with already having passed the h&s parts. I wasn't really prepared for the equality and diversity etc questions, and to be perfectly honest a lot of it isn't really applicable to small firms. (less than 5 employees). How are you supposed to represent local ethnic diversity when it's only me and 2 lads? In the end I got really busy with tree work and never bothered to finish it. 2 suggestions, firstly allow new applicants to finish the application and then pay the fee on submission. Second could there be an option for small firms without some of those irrelevant questions?
  17. Really helps with your spelling too.
  18. Thanks for all the positive comments guys, this project has been a long time in the making so its great to get a good response from others in the industry.
  19. High sides and roof no problem, already done a Ranger supercab model.
  20. Quoted for one last week, I'll be sure to get some pics for you if the order comes in.
  21. Yes I can do both of those. Got a hilux extra cab unit in the paint shop now, I'll put some pics up when I have fitted it.
  22. Max weight, I have put 1000kg in mine and tips it, in practise the legal payload will be around 800 kg. Galvanising is not really suitable as the sheet tends to distort, we use an etch primer which chemically bonds to the steel, and a very hard gloss top coat.
  23. Prices start at £1500 for the base model for a double cab. What flat bed vehicle have you got? I can remove my unit from the Navara and refit my canopy in approx 30 minutes, takes about 45 minutes going the other way.
  24. Thanks Steve, I am more than happy to answer any questions on the forum, and I'll be adding pics of new designs as and when they are built.
  25. Quality hairdressing?
