  1. My mates just got one of those 4-mix Stihl long reaches. I tried it out for a couple of hours, and it made me so glad that I opted for the Echo. The vibes on that thing were terrible, the spluttery pick-up on the revs wound me up, and the balance is all wrong. Horrible machine.
  2. I think the biggest problem with the cheques system from now on is the withdrawal of the cheque guarantee scheme on the bank cards. Without this there will be no support, surely this will lead to the demise of the cheques much sooner. Many businesses already refuse to accept cheques as payment for this reason.
  3. Because for every action, there must be a reaction.
  4. I have a pair, been working cutting a path through dense blackthorn today, no rips or tears, comfortable and a vast improvement on the Fiordland trowsers they replaced. A very light trouser too
  5. This was on the local news tonight, as they are following the case in the court. It was mentioned that the tree has shed 2 limbs in a 30 year period, (IIRC) 2 acts of nature, 2 small blips in the lifetime of a tree, what are the odds of someone being under at the exact time the branch failed, yet this time there was a group of children. How far should we go to remove this risk totally, after all one life lost is one too many? Keep the kids away from all trees? How far do we need to go, hundreds of trees around an estate, large mature trees, is it necessary to go beyond a VTA from the ground? Just in case?
  6. I would have thought that any reputable professional would help you remedy the situation as a goodwill gesture, esp given the money you have spent with them.
  7. A popular misconception I'm afraid, the CofE has loads of money, the RC church has loads of money. Unfortunately the parish churches have to pay into the Diocese a large sum every year (several thousand pounds) some of which is given to them from the Parish Councils, some from collections and gifts, but thats about their lot. They can approach the Diocese to petition for a Faculty to assist with large payments for essential works, and this is decided by the Consistory Court of the Diocese, and is by no means a guarantee of funds to be released. I have advised on a few Faculty applications, for essential tree safety works, some go through, some dont. I'm currently trying to push through one, but it doesnt look promising this time.
  8. I was thinking about this today, and was wondering how many people use a chainsaw inside the bucket? Whenever my saw is in cutting mode, I am reaching out of the bucket, I start the saw outside the bucket, and I turn it off outside the bucket. How many incidents of injury have been recorded where a bucket operator has been injured by a running saw inside the bucket?
  9. Risky or risque ? Or either?
  10. Want any more?
  11. Thanks Will Personally, I prefer to operate the Mewp and manouvre between cuts myself, rather than have a 2nd operator. I know where I need to get into position for my next cuts, they dont. They clutter the basket, get in the way, try to be helpful, and generally slow things down rather than speed things up, also Im the IPaf ticket holder, they arent as a rule. With a physical barrier, I'd think it would reduce efficiency as the barrier will restrict movement too much.
  12. Would this include a barrier between saw operator and Mewp operator, or is this something that would be supplied with the machine?
  13. How does a land-owner get on, esp with public access, if he has no funds to maintain very old trees where the public do have access? As we all know, to have a survey carried out is not cheap, to have the necessary work carried out is not cheap. If the pot is empty, no amount of good intention will prevent the inevitable failure of limbs and trees in time. I am not refering here to the NT btw, but a small parish church where the public need to tend graves, and with 2 public footpaths passing through, close to the trees.
  14. Whats wrong with it?
  15. A builder friend of mine was offered his bosses business when he retired, for a large sum. For the money he would get the client base, the contacts, the ongoing works, and company vehicles. He chose not to buy the business, went self-employed, bought a van and advertised. he gained the majority of the ongoing contracts, most of the client list moved over to him anyway as they knew him, and so on. He now employs (5 years on) more staff than the old company, and turns over more. Good will aint worth a lot IMO. If things are going well for your company, I'd wonder why you'd wish to leave it all behind to become a consultant for someone else, and if I were to be interested in buying you out, it would raise some concerns for me.
  16. I know of 3 people who took (and passed) their chainsaw tickets at 16.
  17. Yes I got mine too, lovely and they fit like a ......er...... glove. I also thought, on first impression, they'd be good hedgetrimming gloves. Very supple
  18. Believe me its essential to drink and moderate at the same time, its the only way half the posts make sense

  20. How does a person gain experience of quoting something a little different to their norm? By going out and having a bash at it, maybe asking for a little help from his peers? Isnt that why we are on this forum? Until a couple of weeks ago, I hadnt dealt with a particular aspect of this job, let alone worked out costings for various unknowns to me. Did I walk away and leave it to someone with prior knowledge? No, I agonised over every detail for many hours, made a multitude of calls, and tried to back-up my plans, and luckily it worked out (sort of!) So maybe, just maybe, it would be helpful to share now and again, instead of a put-down.
