  1. Declining Oak tree i reduced today....probably wont last much longer anyway.....forgot to take an after pic! anchor points were decidedly dodgy so i opted for 2. my main anchor point was sound, but i needed a better point to get out on the branch over the shed and wire.
  2. welcome to the site mate.....looks like it could have been worse....thanks for giving your account for our benefit!
  3. indeed....my nerdometer now reads an astonishing 34!!!!
  4. no thrusting...take the pulls and tend the slack like you have been doing.......really to get the maximum benefits you need to be on a rope guide, or at the very least a cambium saver, preferably with a pulley attached to the small ring
  5. Just heard from Rupe that Phillipa won the ladies....clean sweep all round for the brits!!
  6. thats true, its such a shame when people switch to a short knot, dont quite get it, then give up after a day or so.
  7. http://www.mytreelessons.com you may love your blakes now but after moving on to a v.t or similar i can pretty much guarantee you'll change your mind
  8. excellent, well done jon and stuart (if you're reading)
  9. i was very careful to mention finding somewhere stable to take up the slack...meaning, at various intervals along the branch. so long as you dont let too much slack in your line.....i believe in comp climbing they deduct points if the slack bows beneath your knees??
  10. Hi everyone, I'd just like to draw your attention to the revised rules and posting guidelines now in place. These are here for the benefit of everyone and are for the most part common sense. Please read in full and understand. As always if you have any questions please send me a message either privately or here in the thread. Steve Arbtalk forum rules and posting guidelines
  11. eventually ed.....havent decided how to approach that yet, might be best on its own site
  12. http://www.arbtalk.co.uk/links hopefully this will grow into a useful database for all of us
  13. grab both ends of your line and walk in, get to a stable point where you can hook your foot round something then tend some slack
  14. Ian....i never had a great deal of experience with the regate as i didnt get on with it from day 1, but from memory, this doesnt seem to glaze as quick
  15. interesting drew! hey i have some of that rope...looking forward to trying it out...wont be strength testing it though!
  16. yeah, im using the silverstreak on 11mm rope, works fine
  17. liros is good, any bog standard polyester double braid works well, if you have a chandlers near you they will stock that. the new yale silverstreak is good theres none really that are bad as such, you just need to find good combinations
  18. Im having a bit of a sort out at home....ok a major sort out, lots of stuff being skipped, though i thought this was a little too good to just throw away, im sure someone here would like it. just reply to the thread and you'll be in the free draw scheduled next sunday 29th at 6pm. book is slightly warped but in pretty good condition...I had 3 bonsai books a few years back when i had time for such things, this was the best of them good luck
  19. oh, theres a correct way if you want a strict v.t. going for variations just makes it a different know but they all work under the same principle. i generally tie it with the top leg going over the top on the first braid, but sometimes alternate it depending which rope im using. but like i said, the key is having the length right.
  20. there were a few, at ground level and about 1 meter up the trunk
  21. its all down to the length of the legs. IMO theres no right way to tie it...as long as you have sufficient amounts or wraps and braids.....but if the legs are too short it leaves too much play within the knot and you'll get the problem you're having. for the record i climb with 3 wraps 2 braids oh and make the legs 2 short and you lose the dynamics of the knot....its a fine line but get it right and its fantastic
  22. did you change the cam accordingly?
  23. white poplar with advanced cubicle brown rot caused by laetiporous sulphureus(chicken of the woods) top was already snapped and leaning in another tree, plenty room for feel so we put a cable on it and pulled with the tractor....you can see from the pics that i only just nicked the back a few inches before getting outta the way...it was totally knackered
