i've got a hakki pilke 1X37 no real complaints....a great entry level machine. i think the price isnt as reasonable as it was when i bought mine a couple years back. although they have made some handy modifications. its a nice hands on machine. chainsaw instead of circular saw. I'd definetly recomend the chainsaw...much quieter and a lot safer IMO.

How much experience needed to go freelance?

you'll find the insurance issue varies from company to company but i think by law you should have your own, at least that seems to be the way most the companies i freelance to are leaning. experience......ideally you should be able to turn up to any job blind with the confdence to know you'll be able to tackle it. within a company you'll find the boss has priced the work, knows the level his climbers can climb at and designate tasks accordingly...as a higher paid contract climber you'll be expected to tackle anything(providing its possible) i wouldnt waste my time with cv's, you're not looking for a job.....if you turn up for a day, and at the end of it they dont think you are worth what you're charging they wont have you again.....likewise, if you do a day for them and things dont gel, you're under no obligation to work for them again either.....one of the best things about being freelance IMO! -

i dont think an ali block mounted on a steel plate is a problem, rigging with a steel krab onto an ali pulley would be bad as an example.....the metal krab could cause damage to the softer ali pulley

now i think about it....aluminium rigging pulleys are available....and seeings as using a steel krab with an ali pulley is a big no no, that would suggest to me its OK to use ali

pity pete isnt here, his internet is down. as a loler inspector i would think he would have the answer. If i had to guess i'd say the answer would be dependant on the scenario and would be covered in your risk assessment.

i use a mixture, but if rigging big wood make a point of definetly using metal i think the key thing is to make sure you're not using metal on ali

you could re-direct the lowering line from the main trunk rather than roping it off on the limb only
