Due to a key piece of insider information, received just minutes before the phone call, it wasn't appropriate to ask the questions I had lined up for the council leader.

As it transpires, it wasn't a Cornwall council led or funded project and that advice from the chief forestry officer against the selection and procurement of the failed trees was, apparently, provided and ignored.

It's a shame that the statement issued by CC stated that they couldn't answer since a staff member was no longer employed, then the council leader said, on air, I can't answer for that because it happened before my tenure. Both really lame angles which did nothing to protect or enhance the reputation of the council which suffers a fairly woeful level of public confidence.

A better answer might have been - Cornwall council provided advice to the project delivery department which was ignored. The failure is not a criticism that should be levelled at the council but rather at the department responsible.

Good on him for doing a monthly open mic Q&A live on air. He gets some pretty sharp finger poking - and, unfortunately, tends to rise and react to it which normally does more harm than good in generating public support, appreciation and understanding of the council.

One good consequence of 'austerity' is that the general public are becoming much more attuned and engaged in VfM arguments and the desire to hold public sector to account for apparently barking projects and spends from LAs.
