I've not milled any oak myself, yet.

Have had a couple of friends mention how naughty oak can be whilst drying out.... twisting, shrinking, cracking, splitting, etc.

Was on a job a couple days ago and chatted with a farmer who mentioned some people keep milled oak dunked underwater for a while to help prevent those seasoning problems occurring.

I've not heard of this before.

Interesting idea - has anyone here tried it?

cheers, steve

The farmer might have been talking about seasoning timber with PEG, Polyethylene Glycol is added to water to make a solution, the green timber is immersed in it and the PEG stabilises the timber to reduce shakes and warping.

Could well be that, he was pretty vague about it.

I got the impression he was talking about dunking them in a pond for a while; in murky cow poo water (kind of thing).

Thanks for the link.... gonna read it proper.

Surely that's what's happening on Axe men when Shelby and the others pull the logs out of the swamps..... the timber seems to fetch a premium. You would think he could afford a new shirt!
