This Michael Stone/Levi Bellfield story is shocking.

He was twice found guilty by a jury, and now it seems he didn’t do it.

I find it hard to see how that can happen, but it looks like it did.

It is shocking. 25 years inside. He'd have been dead if there was capital punishment.

It's how the old bill and CPS deal with things, the old bill throw the book at people and CPS agree it, it's stupendous! Throwing charges around in the hope of catching folk. @nepia am I right or wrong?

Not my experience at all Egger.  Police don't even suggest the charges - CPS do that so it's certainly not the case of the latter simply going along with what the former want.

Any cosiness between the two is PR: the CPS are seen as a pain in the butt largely.

'Throwing charges around in the hope of catching folk' hardly applied when it came to prosecuting Asian groomers did it!

Groomers were dust swept under the carpet. Investigative journalism had to make the case before CPS or constables would take it seriously. Mud slinging or throwing charges around hoping something will stick is something else entirely.

You know like I know, the Asian gangs weren't dealt with for fear of the police being called racists. It's the same up the city, they run the place and no one is doing anything about it because, you've got it...

My knowledge of the whole sordid affair comes from what I've seen on the tele but I don't doubt the truth of it

Muppets like Nadine Dorries really serve to undermine the case for career politicians being in technically demanding positions.

What's wrong with having a technocrat? Someone who is expert in their field? It's like bloody Dominic Raab (always a reliable source for car crash interviews) referring to misogyny against women and men. There will be a list as long as my arm of politicians putting their feet in their mouths....

Exactly. Surely the people who are in cabinet positions should have a slight background in their chosen field.
