Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.

 

 

These verses were specifically written in and for a time when certain people groups were sacrificing their own children in fires and participating in devil worship.

Apparently God wasn't too chuffed with it and wanted to stop people doing it

Yes, that's the Old Testament anyway, essentially the history of the Jews. Christian doctrine is derived from the New Testament. Old testament said "An eye for an eye", New Testament says "Turn the other cheek". Its a common misdirection, or intellectual dishonestly that people use to discredit Christianity when asked to compare Christianity with Islam. I've done it myself, to piss off the Jahova's Witnesses.

Its not about removing the elephant, its about acknowledging its existence and discussing the issue everyone is pretending isn't the real problem.

My interpretation of The Bible is certainly imperfect and admittedly a work in progress, but I do try, at least, to look at "the whole counsel of scripture". I could quite easily extract single passages out to support just about any given viewpoint.
