I'll hazard at a guess that if the NHS was abolished/privatised you would see the insurance premium's skyrocket. ATM you don't have to pay for health insurance so they can be competitive, once you have no choice they will just put the prices up, and hike them up to the hilt they will. In your post about it costing 2k a year for a family of 4 does that cover everything and would they also include things like known chronic illnesses and how long does it cover you for if for example one of you is 70 years old etc? Do they pay the NHS for emergency care? Eg, a car accident, the NHS picks you up gets you to a hospital and saves your life, keeps you in a bed until your stable then what, do they ship you to a private hospital and bill your insurance company for the costs?

I've never had private health insurance so I have no clue on here it works. I've had car insurance for a long time and I understand that they can cherry pick their customers and although I have untold years of no claims bonuses my premium goes up each bleeding year. It's never went down when I hit 25 or 30 or 40 and it will probably go up at a faster rate from now on!

The NHS will always be begging for money, it will never operate efficiently otherwise it's budget will be cut. 

 

Imo the NHS needs to operate on its own. Every time a new government comes into power it changes the way the NHS operates. It takes years to implement those changes which fooks things up then another party comes in and swaps it all back, more years of changes and more money wasting. 

The NHS should get a fixed percentage of the GDP or the thing that says how much money we have and it's up to them how they spend it. A percentage of that goes to watchdogs or OFNHS etc to make sure that they aren't just dumping old people into the canals and rivers.

I have to agree with much of that.

and not just because I don't wanna get chucked in the canal.

As far as I can tell - have it but never needed to use it, UK Private health care covers things that the GP looks at and leaves the NHS to the tricky things like A&E, but some things the NHS will do better anyway (I think once diagnosed the headliners - like cancers and heart disease the NHS is up there with the best), so private will not do that so much either. In the US private healthcare covers everything.

Pretty much agree with this one.

 

A percent of GDP makes sense, but perhaps with an absolute minimum that they need to provide for should be guaranteed (in the extreme odd chance that GDP tanks).

 

Yes changing government adds inefficiencies due to change.. 4 years later they are on track and then it is all changed about again - that is where the money is wasted, not in the basic system though.

Ha, youre taking one for the team, less taxes to pay your pension mate. Well not less taxes, the same taxes but spent on better things like fixing those expensive parliament doors, new wallpaper for the common room and free peanuts at the MP bar.
