Hopefully this is the correct forum for this.

I am researching replacing the aga and heating oil boiler for heating the farmhouse with a biomass boiler.

I am looking at planting up a 5 acre wood to supply and meet the needs of it (have another thread on that). The boilers need a consistent chip of 3mm being fed seasoned wood of course.

What would be the cost of one of these chippers ? Any good makes to look out for ?

thanks

I assume you mean 30mm chip. Heizohack do a 12inch chipper that's suitable and it's around 25K +VAT I think. It needs 120hp. You can go second hand but be careful with chippers.

Wood boilers are cheaper to buy but more work in the long run.

i have just had a 80kw boiler installed too run a kiln and it takes hardly any wood to run it . i was going to get a woodchip one but went for the log one as you can always get wood for free. we run ours 24 hours a day and it takes about 1/4 cubic metre of logs

Better to hire someone to chip for you in my opinion. No tractor, no sharpening blades,no breakdowns to worry about and extra help when you chip if you go the chip route.

+1. Chances are they'll have a better chipper = better chip. Really not enamoured with Heizohack either. Sharpen this, change that, re-jig another thing - still power hungry and fines galore

We use about 50 tonnes of chip per year and our best investment is the shed to put it in, it is fairly easy to get chippers in and the bigger the better
