Two sides to every coin.

The pity is, after stating a set of circumstances and seeking advice, the OP (and those on the one side of the coin) appear keener to rubbish the sound, clearly beneficial and potentially legally binding advice presented by the other side of the coin.

It appears obvious that the circumstances described relate to an inexperienced, poorly prepared, planned and executed task out with the published industry guidelines, probably for cash, possibly in conflict with employment contract and under the HMRC radar. (All that is pretty apparent from what the OP has / had not said.)

Seriously?

And you think it sensible / appropriate to take offence, get a hairy shirt on and sling insults at those that have taken the time to offer a perspective broader than that which you have stated?

Were you aware of some of the potential pitfalls that have been highlighted?

mecca works five days a week for the tax man, he's contributed his bit for the benefits rich, if he wants to earn a few quid for himself at the weekend then fair play, and many of us don't have ludicrous contracts and are forced to take on jobs a rock bottom price where paying for help would eat up any profits, about time some of you got off your high horses and realised that the rest of us need to bend the rules from time to time to make a profit, you can quote all the rules you want be I'll bet you broke as many H&S rules as the rest of us. hypocrites!

You're forced to work at rock bottom prices because people such as Macca (no offence) are doing cash jobs at weekends. I have no doubt he is a good climber etc. but it doesn't take away from the fact that while most try and do things properly, some are happy to do the job on the cheap, no insurance, rescue climber etc.

You make a good point and if I was at the stage where I had invested in a chipper and had a couple of guys on the books then I may of felt the same way!

On the other hand that is my goal! To have a nice van and chipper and to employ a couple of people!

So how am I going to get to that goal? Hand outs? No!

Help from others? No!

Finance? No!

I will get there earning where I can from any opportunity!

I stated early on in this thread that I had just started doing Saturday work!

HMRC reckons I have 3 months to declare this! So sorry to those setting the noose for my tax evasion trial.

Employers liability insurance! ffs I will wait until I employ someone before I even go there!

Public liability insurance I have been looking at, but can I state again I am very early on in doing Saturday work! We ain't all perfect! If I come across a 50m poplar leaning over Buckingham palace I may speed up this process! I am doing small trees in big gardens!

This thread didn't turn out like I thought it would but that's how threads go! I like Mike D's quote and that is what I will take from this. I haven't killed any customers yet😂😂😂😂😂😩

its not right to blame people like mecca for the state of the industry, he isn't just some handyman with a chainsaw moonlighting as a tree surgeon. If a customer can't afford to bring in a full tree surgery squad (or the job isn't big enough to need one) then someone must pick up the slack, i'd rather see the job go to mecca who's served his time and already paid his weekly tax contribution than some untrained chancer who's probably on benefits. i'm sure quite a few self employed members of the forum started up for themselves in exactly the same way. And for those members that are worried about Saturday work ruining the industry, you could always advertise to do smaller jobs for free, that will keep mecca, me, and every other small time, part time operater from encroaching on your monopoly?
